Chikao Ōtsuka passes away at 85

Japanese voice actor Chikao Ōtsuka passed away at age 85 yesterday, on January 15th. He was the father of Akio Ōtsuka, who has been voicing Snake since Metal Gear Solid 1 (and currently Big Boss in The Phantom Pain).

For Metal Gear Solid 4, Chikao Ōtsuka joined his son in the recording booth to voice Big Boss, paralleling the father-son relationship in the story.

So long, japanese Big Boss. ;_;7

Poor Akio, he’s still working in the game and other projects, his will be a low blow for him.

  • Golgari

Really? Chikao Otsuka voiced a BB as a father? Wow.

    • He only voiced Big Boss in MGS4, otherwise Snake and Big Boss are always done by Akio. Same for the English version with Hayter and Doyle, until Kiefer that is.

      • Golgari

Yeah. I know about MGS4 stuff. Just never knew he was Otsuka’s father. That’s just amazing that Kojima allowed that to happen. But sad day for his son…

  • WhatTheJuicay

Good thing I never played the Japanese versions as I would be saddened. Though, Hayter not being in the English version is sorta similar… sorta.

    • Shalashaska Has Landed

Hayter isn’t deceased nor precluded from doing another MGS installment in the series.
      Totally different ballpark, bruh.

      • WhatTheJuicay

I never said Hayter was deceased. I said “sorta similar”.. in other words, if you don’t understand slang, “Sort of similar”. Almost the same, but not quite. Really don’t know why you had to comment just to have a disagreement about saying basically the same thing. Captain obvious, bruh.

        • Shalashaska Has Landed

Because it isn’t “almost the same”, thus I said totally different ballpark. One is physically / spiritually departed, and no longer exists, while the other not only remains active, but interactive with our community. Willingly & available to occur again at anytime for another MGS installment. Those are two different outlines which makes it nowhere near “sorta similar”. No need to turn your frustrations out on me.

terribly sad news. rest in peace..

  • MrVux007

    i feel the pain……. rip Sir! O7

  • Big_Boss88

Oh maaan ;(…this is so sad news. Losing someone close is always very sad.
I really loved his voicing on Biggu Bossu in MGS4. Hope Akio will be okey and may you rest in peace Chikao-san :C…

    • Still planning to play the game in Japanese one day. But this ending is epic in any language.

      • Big_Boss88

Yeah I agree it is epic :). I actually haven’t played any MGS in Japanese, except GZ on PC which was great. Happened to watch this ending version in youtube before though.

I’m planning to play the games or at least MGS4 too in Japanese some day.

    • Shalashaska

I want to get a ps4 someday and play this game. I feel so sad watching the end of big boss and snake.. only wishing i could play this and go thru every moment. Someday perhaps. These lines… so much better than hayter or any of the english VOs..

      • Big_Boss88

I am sure that you get a chance someday.

  • Cassio

    This is good…isn’t?

    R.I.P.

I hope we meet again 🙂

  • Venom_Sina

He’d done a lot of anime and games.I loved his work in MGS4 as Big Boss. Also,he was Dr. Eggman From Sonic the Hedgehog(JPN Ver.).Rest in Peace,Otsuka-san..

    • Stormy Rain

WHY IS IT ALWAYS EGGMAN’S VOICE ACTORS?! :'(

  • PrinceHeir

I’m heart broken about this. He was legend among legends. He did amazing voice work like Jinpachi in Tekken series, Hellsing Ultimate, Xehanort from Kingdom Hearts Series, Gundam 00 Aeolia Schenberg and Big Boss in MGS4.

Must be tough with Akio-san and all. I do hope he lived a good life with no more dispute with his son and his family and all..

My condolences to Otsuka and his family.

RIP Big Boss. Another Legendary MGS Seiyuu passes away. Off to a rough start this 2015 🙁

  • LukesAlike

… I never knew he was Akio’s father. Oh man…

  • moto hellogoto

I’m glad he got to live a long life.

  • No Place For Hayter

Not the news I was expecting to see, that sucks, my condolences to his family.
Never expect to see these people die, hope he had a good run, having him die is depressing but remembering the end of MGS4 with the Japanese voices and the story behind it makes me smile.
    Farewell Chikao, rest in peace.

I didn’t realize he was of that age. I assumed he was in his late 60s or early 70s. Like what was said earlier, the dude was a legend. I also wonder what this means for future MGS, since Kojima has an issue for recasting the Japanese actors.

    • Yeah, though Ocelot in MGSV is played by a new actor (the Japanese voice of ‘Old Ocelot’ passed away in 2006, but like in the English version he’s no longer voiced by the previous actor for ‘Young Ocelot’).

  • Captain

I know him better as the voice of Joseph Joestar from the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure OVA. My heart goes out to his entire family as he was a brilliant man.

  • PrinceHeir

Here’s some portfolio of his roles.

    • Xomak

Haha, no way! He was Professor Moriarty in Sherlock Hound?!

  • Janeo

Always sad to hear when someone dies but it’s nice to see how respectful this comment section is, any other comment section on the internet would be making jokes so seeing this just shows that this site is visited by quality people.

“Everyone dies. You can’t stop it. You can’t run away from
    it….” this is very sad
