Metal Gear Solid voted best PlayStation game of all time by PlayStation fans

A few days ago, PlayStation ran a poll through their official blog page asking fans to vote for the best PlayStation game of all time, in celebration of the system’s 20th anniversary.

The results are in, and Metal Gear Solid is the winner, beating Crash Bandicoot Warped (fourth place), Crash Bandicoot (third place) and Final Fantasy VII (second place).

  • فخشمك

    Cool

  • N-Shifter

    Well, obviously 🙂

  • Solid O. #V

Also the best metal gear game

    • Filipe Mendes

      I think the same.

    • Gatsu

MGS3 is best imo ;)..and MGS is right after it.
But when I replay the games I often think “damn this game is the best ever!”. They’re just all so good and give the feels ;D. Actually now I want to play them all…

      • Yeah, when it comes to Metal Gear it’s very hard to pick a favorite.

        • Gatsu

          It sure is XD …

          • glitchbomb

            Gatsu! Your face!?
You are looking more furious every day!

          • Gatsu

            ;D

        • Solid O. #V

I wish one day you could create a poll about this 😛

          • IM2PAC

            He already did iw think

      • vic boss

Exactly what I think, (except for peace walker) Dont get me wrong it’s a great game but I tried to play it all over again and couldn’t , I ended up just watching the cutscenes.

        • WhatTheJuicay

Same here. I barely finished Mgs3 a few months ago. Mgs4 was easiest to pick up and play again. My favorites are between mgs4 and mgs2. Don’t care if I’m in the minority.

          • John Saladin

2 is actualy a masterpiece not comparable with 4 and there is a good reason why 4 is not like 2

      • Denuq

totally agree with you, mgs3 > mgs > PW > mgs v for me

  • Victor Medeiros Coelho

    Im so proud!! snif =´)

  • Ronald Townsend

there’s some good out there after all

  • PrinceHeir

My favorite as well as Castlevania Symphony Symphony of the Night which are also made under Konami.

Damn Konami wtf happened to you??

    • INVISIBLITYCLOAK

They always didnt know how to treat their devs but after the new ceo they arekilling themselves. Hope Kojima manages to save konami but that would be impossible but i was just expecting some big boss twist

  • gerber

I would put Legacy of Kain: Soul reaver on the 3rd or 4th place, and maybe Silent Hill

    • stocchinet .

Soul reaver never get the love it deserve, i’m sad that the saga will never continue 🙁

    • Gatsu

That was and still is a fantastic game… Silent Hill used to give me nightmares, damn creepy knife monsters in the dark school o_O…

    • Yeah it’s a good list, but I only agree with Number 1 and number 2. Castlevania, Tekken 3, Chrono Cross are higher than crash for me.

    • Ishmael

Or Resident Evil or Resident Evil 2, which were fantastic games.

  • SlayeCohenX

That FF7 is overated, there are plenty of better games on PS1. Megaman X4 could be there :'(

    • gerber

what does even “overrated” mean? That you do not agree with opinion of majority? It’s your subjective opinion but most people will rate it high, so how can it be “overrated”

    • Ishmael

no it’s not. I’m not a fan of the fantasy genre in general but that game had an outstanding story for example.

  • The best will always be the best.

  • John Saladin

Ps1 game with more complex story and better characters than mgsv

    • Some men just want to see the world burn

      • John Saladin

Now what do you mean by that

    • I think the story style of TPP is a natural product of its place in the game world timeline. How much more exposition is needed when it comes to the slice of time between PW and Metal Gear Solid? What I’m getting at is that we already know the future regarding Big Boss, Ocelot, Zero, everyone really because we’ve played them out in the games.

We know the beginning, middle and end of the story that is the Metal Gear Solid saga essentially and GZ/TPP is a game that covers a small sliver of the timeline.

A lot of the magic usual present in an MGS game is either missing or left wanting in TPP. I can’t explain it in a few words but I think other people know what I’m talking about, things like how the game world was in a sense linear but that allowed the player to become more intimate with it, the enjoyment of becoming a perfect player inside the self contained levels and replaying the game over and over with unlocks, and all the amazing technically dense information the player had access too.

Metal Gear Solid games were like playing a novel in a sense and each time you read a favorite book you notice new things and appreciate it more. I think TPP was affected by business model bureaucracy to a degree but at its core the game succeeds as something Kojima always wanted to create since the beginning and something players have dreamed about for years, A free-infiltration experience.

To me the game is what I imagined while playing the original metal gear 2 many years ago. It’s exactly the type of game the Artwork of Metal Gear 2 mad me wish for and the instruction manual story causes you to imagine. Not a self-contained and enclosed linear experience but a wilderness where you can create the experience you desire.

I miss the polished and refined expository presentation of the previous games but can appreciate TPP as being something that was needed in the MGS anthology, a free-form infiltration sandbox and a true battlefield experience.

      • Story wise, Kojima could have just let MGSV take us to the final confrontation with him and Solid. I haven’t played it yet, but I know from impressions from friends, it’s not going to be my favorite because the story takes back seat. that maybe what some people want, but not many MGS fans, the story is everything. I’m glad the gameplay got overhauled, but I don’t think anyone wanted the story to take a back seat. Maybe Kojima planned to do more, but we’ll never know now.

      • John Saladin

I like tpp too its the best Far Cry game ive ever played

        • yea it was definitely a departure from the standard mg model. I was watching a movie-ized version of MGS4 yesterday and it made me think “I wish we had got another classic mg game”

      • Actually TPP could be the most epic game story wise in MGS series as it was supposed to show us Big Boss’s downfall to villainy, everything could be so epic if it could deliver a good story. I wish Kojima could just hire authors to give that touch like he did before instead of focusing himself on the story.

        • John Saladin

Fukushima …….. Fukushima he is mr metal gear … Kojima is not important

  • Steven Michael Brown

    This is awesome

  • Ain’t no surprise !!!

  • Gatsu

I knew MGS would be number one <3! One of the best games ever that revolutionized gaming.

I voted for MGS1 and FFVII :). Would've given my vote to FFVIII but it wasn't on the list imo.

  • FoxTamerMGO

Off topic.. anyone noticed that the voice actors in MGO3 are the same in MGO2? ;’D

  • Vulcanproject

The title screen music still gives me shivers any time I hear it. I played the game to death, it blew my mind. To say it revolutionised my ideas about what video games could be is still an understatement.

    • doo doo doo doodadoo….

      pause…

      doo doo doo doodaahdoo…

  • Best MGS game all time.. Second one MGS3 third MGS4

  • grapes9h5

FFIX should be in there behind MGS, VII is amazing and really special, but IX is the best FF imo.

    • Gatsu

I wanted to vote for FFVIII or IX when people were able to give two votes, but the list had only FFVII if I remember correctly :(…

Lots of incredible games besides the winners, which I would have wanted to vote also.

    • Gatsu

The main theme still gives me such amazing feelings and memories. I should replay IX again soon <(^O^<)…

      Such a fantastic OST…

  • Nekkedsnake

no surprise there! i played and beat it several times and now own MGS1 (as well as all the other MGS games) at least 3 times over. i actually got into Metal Gear Solid when a good friend, and fellow MGS fan, suggested i try MGS2:SOL. the first time i tried it i wasn’t used to its mechanics. but the 2nd time i gave it a Solid go and HOLY FUCK… MIND BLOWN. from SOL i played MGS1, 3, 4, PO, PW, in the beginnings of MG1, MG2:SS, right in the middle of MGS:GB, GZ, and now working my way slowly thru TPP. i never loved a franchise the way i love MGS. Nothing like it!

  • Orko

Now if we could only BUY/PLAY digital PS1 classics on PS4, that’d be great Sony. Seeing as how digital PS1 classics are presently cross buy/play on ALL playstation systems capable of connecting to PSN (PSP, Vita, PS3) EXCEPT the newest and most powerful PS4.

    • Dr.Ghettoblaster

Yeah i’ve been waiting on this since PS4 launch actually. Over the years I have purchased and acquired a rather large library of fantastic digital PSOne classics like this via my PSP, Vita, and PS3 which all allowed me to access, download, and play them on all 3 systems via cross buy.

Unfortunately i had to sell my systems due to financial hardships and eventually upgraded to PS4, my now only Sony system. I just assumed they’d all still be accessible (cross buy/play) just as they were on the other 3 systems. Still very disappointed they’re not. Hoping this feature gets added soon, and NOT by charging me to RENT the PSOne classics through PS Now that I already purchased via my unified PSN account.

  • MarcoRM82

oh boy !!! the end of chapter 1 spectacular!

    • Javier

now you have only 3 main episodes.

  • Raven_Sorrow

Every time I feel the urge to replay my Metal Gear Solid: http://thegamebakers.com/bossfights/mgs1_grayfox/mgs1_grayfox_03.gif

  • This game is the best game ever. Thats why this year i did this.

    • Greyfox98

Now that’s what I call devotion, man

    • Mike J.

Damn, where’d you get this done? I was going to get a ton of gaming tats of games I love/that formed me and made me the person who I am today, and I definitely count MGS amongst them.

    • WhatTheJuicay

I was going to get something similar but I didn’t like how his head looked incomplete. I got something dedicated to the Outer Haven logo instead. Not quite it though. Should have went with the exact thing.

      • Takezo

        pics required

        • WhatTheJuicay

I’ll see what I can do. I actually have 2. They’re both mgs inspired. The 2nd one I sorta feel like it was a bad idea or the artist just sucked. Thinking about getting it covered up. The colors make it look bad especially. Stay tuned..

    • I want to get Liquid Snake’s tattoo

  • PS1 era was a Hell of a time to be a kid. I’d agree with these polls. MGS ALL DAY!

Off Topic: I now fully understand the love Kojima had for uploading shots from inside Pequad haha

    • BurntFM

I think it was subliminal conditioning. He was getting us ready to spend countless hours looking at this guy sitting in the ACC

    • Gatsu

      What a bloody mess xD.

  • GREATEST GAME EVER
    GREATEST CHARACTER writing X design
    GREAT ATMOSPHERE
    LEGENDARY MUSIC!!!

    • Greyfox98

I feel the same way man

  • PhantomSnake

And hopefully Konami realises that they made a huge mistake getting rid of Kojima.

  • Greyfox98

This is the Metal Gear I replay the most, and its one of the two games I would recommend for newcomers, I love it!

  • Joaquin Romero Victorica

Does anyone felt after finish the phantom pain, this strange sensation of emptiness and sadness about the last metal gear solid game?

    • hunner

Most of SKull Face’s hand gestures were pointless lol

      • Mr.Pony

The dialogue too “Such a lust for revenge! Whhhhhhooooo?” I laughed at that line. Skull Face would be a great villain if we had seen and heard less of him, making him more mysterious.

        • The lack of story telling mate.. it ruined the game ..Yes Skull Face has all the reasons to be villain yet we never feel the anger within him

          • John Saladin

The story can not be short enough in mgsv because its so cheap

        • Plissken

I expect memes of Skullface as an owl saying “Whooooo” That was a pretty bad line in a pretty cool scene. Not my favorite scene but it was pretty good

      • Javier

        and ocelot`s

    • Cia Luen

Yeah,i haven’t play end the game yet ,but i really feel sad.that known mgs5 tpp is the last mgs game…..

    • Plissken

Was it a Kaz burger though? Why is his name Benedict rather than McDonell Miller?

    • Solid PhoeniX

Uhm . . .YESS. I just wanted to lay down and Cry

  • Joaquin Romero Victorica

This is Peaquod arriving at chapter 3.

“Mayday mayday, mission 51 down, I repeat mission 51 down!

    http://33.media.tumblr.com/ab72d20f4d61efdea71cfe11165d11da/tumblr_nup6n1576K1qm4heyo2_540.gif

  • INVISIBLITYCLOAK

Well its pretty interesting to find fans get their nostalgia back due to this despite their hate for tpp!

  • hunner

According to three dog he spoke to a dev and this is what he had to say – https://twitter.com/DoggTTV/status/645020271351566336
Now it’s not confirmed but i doubt that threedog would troll the mgs fanbase –

    • Danny Patten

Meh…never heard of this guy and if he is legit, how do we know that “dev” is legit?
And if chapter 3 is in there, how come some have 100% in the game already and don’t tell anybody about it? Or better question: how does Kojima perceive what 100% is 😀

      • hunner

3dog is legit. He’s a hardcore mgs fan who constanly streams the mgs series. The dev however i have no idea if he is legit or just trolling.

        • Mr.Pony

It’s all part of Kojima’s master plan I tell you, let us think the story is incomplete and one of these days we unlock chapter 3…one can only hope that’s the case

          • Danny Patten

wouldn’t by now all those dataminers found evidence of its existence?
I mean there is nothing other than players crying their hearts about “missing” content.

          • Mr.Pony

They did find the name of the third chapter “Peace” but that’s about it. I don’t see them releasing anything else story-wise, we’re just in the denial phase at this point xD

          • Arestras

Such a lust for cut content!

            WHOOOOO!

          • Danny Patten

totally. I’m glad that we left the anger phase. it was rather annoying.

          • Mr.Pony

MGS missing chapter will become a legend just like Half-Life 3

      • Zero. With Chapter 3 we go back to 0%, lose everything we have. Mystery solved.

        • Ishmael

          that would be something!

    • INVISIBLITYCLOAK

      i cant see nothing

    • John Dixon

It was and now it’s just a phantom….

    • gerber

If this is somehow true (which I doubt – episode 51 was cut, but we have whooole chapter 3 hidden somewhere?), maybe it has something to do with the hidden nuke disarmament cutscene

      • JJBYACH

        Let it go, man.

        • JohnnyAB

Rumor has it that Kojima/dev just spread the 3rd chapter across 2 chapters.

          • JJBYACH

No, no, he didn’t. I’m 100% sure there is no more “hidden” content in the game.

      • hunner

3dog said that what the dev said about chapter 3 being hidden is very similar to what Robert said about the nuclear disarnment scene.

    • Heavenly_King

If it was there why Kojima would put a video of how could it have been in the CE of the game? Makes no sense.

  • Stephen Reid

    Mgs3 > mgs > mgs4 > mgs2. Still mgs2 is 5/5. I voted for mgs1 and spyro the dragon 🙂 “hmm.. Who’s footprints are these?” XD

    • Gatsu

I remember Spyro, that was a nice game too :)… I wish I had more of my original PS1 games stored somewhere, but only ones I got are MGS, Resident Evil 2, FF7 and Command&Conquer :D.

      • Stephen Reid

Yeah, I found it hard to pick between crash bandicoot, rayman and spyro. love the music in rayman, mgs1 is just pure perfection though, really showed other game companies how it’s done. I still have a good few original ps1 games around, mgs1 still works perfectly! 😀

  • Ishmael

This game had it all. you know what i’m talking ’bout.

  • Gatsu

Quiet will be visiting TGS tomorrow ;).

  • KiroM

where the fuck is symphony of the night? where is metal slug x? and where the fucking fuck is tekken 3? spyro? not saying metal gear solid isn’t worth the title, but there are many other games that were spectacular on ps1, this is unfair

    • ShalashaskaWasHerSon

Castlevania :Symphony of the Night is up there with MGS 1. A stunning game still to this day. Now I wanna go play it again.

  • Javier

mgs1 and 3 are the best mgs games. Sorry mgsv. Can we say big boss is pussy snake?

  • Stuart Robertson

Final fantasy 9 was better then 7, if you’ve ever played all the final fantasies and can actually for an opinion you’d know it’s either 9 or 6, and some even prefer 8 and 10 over the others

  • H’m

1,3,4,5,2… my mgs ordering but id have say the orig will always be number one because nothing can top that first mgs exp ( if you guys were around when it was orig released, all those moons ago )
but id have say 3 for best story, and 5 for best game mechanics

  • ShalashaskaWasHerSon

MGS3 Snake Eater is the best overall PlayStation console game of all time. A vastly superior game in every way to MGS 1. Anybody that can’t see that is blind.

As for MGSV, the WORST! game in the series. It nails it in the gameplay department. But I didn’t think Kojima could trump MGS4 for crappiness, but he achieved it. A story spread so thin it dilutes the reason why the player is on a revenge mission. It’s like “The last cutscene was 5 hours ago. Why am I angry at Skullface again?” It fails to remind you.
    1. Plot holes EVERYWHERE!, underwritten characters (See point 3) 2. Unimaginative and so few boss fights (No Skullface fight?) 3. Unfinished storylines (Paz, Quiet, Eli, and The Third Child) and a bait and switch ending we saw coming years ago. How can it be labled a numbered entry in the series? We don’t even play as the Real Big Boss. WTF! were they doing for 7 years?

    1.MGS3, 2.MGS2, 3.MGS1, 4.PW, 5.MGS4, 6.MGSV.

    • hunner

So anybody who disagrees with you is blind. k

      • ShalashaskaWasHerSon

Blind or hasn’t played Snake Eater yet. Either will suffice.

        • hunner

          lol

        • BigBoss_S_Rank

Bruh, you do realise that the vote was about games on the original playstation 1 right? Last time i checked MGS3 did not appear on the PS1.

Now if you want to argue that MGS3 is a mechanically better game then MGS1 then you’re absolutely right, but until you clarify it as such you’re not making any sense at the moment.
