Konami confirms closure of Los Angeles studio

Konami has confirmed the rumored closure of their Los Angeles based studio, in a statement sent to various websites.

“Konami has made the decision to close its Los Angeles Studio, effective immediately, due to the product development resources being restructured into a more centralized unit. This facility contributed to the recent Metal Gear Solid games. Konami will continue its operations to support all Metal Gear Solid titles, including the recently launched Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain and Metal Gear Online. Metal Gear Online is still scheduled to release for PC Steam in January 2016.”

As you can see Konami is planning to support Metal Gear Online, something that was previously handled by the LA team. A patch for the console versions is planned for mid-November.

We’d like to give our best wishes to all who worked at the studio.

  • moto hellogoto

What about the employees? I wonder if they will be transferred over to somewhere else within Konami or if they’ll just get laid off.

    • Serpent

Now they’ll work as bathroom cleaners at Konami HQ.

      • FoxTamerMGO

Yeah.. they’ll get “Re-Shuffled” within the company.

    • Full Options

They will hopefully work at studios like RS ones, possibly on titles like GTA VI, and forget about this nightmare. If I was a recruiter in the game industry and see anything like Kojima Productions in the resume, I would go Wow !

THEY SHOULD HAVE REMOVED THEMOUSTACHE IF THAT WAS POSSIBLE LOL

It didn’t take long for them to cancel LA HQ. Hopefully the workers find a good new job now that they are free :).

Konami bosses sure fcked up royally this year with some decisions.

  • Venom_Sina

    It’s the final countdown…..

  • Ralexion

    What a shame.

    • Full Options

What a waste. All these facilites were top new. throwing all this money away simply for making a point with HK is so obscene and sick..

      • AeroGre

The LA studio only worked on MGO, it got shutdown cause theres no reason to maintain something they wont use anymore. Nothing to do with making a point

        • Full Options

They said they were after big-scale investment to continue MG so MGO as well, so shutting down a MGO turnkey solution is rather irrational, so that’s why I thought it was still part of the personal problems they have with HK. In any case the origin of all this mess is something as childish as that… Maybe I am mistaken and still too mad at them for thinking this way..

          • AeroGre

They still have their own facilities for future mgs games, as for the future of MGO, i wouldnt hope for much

          • Full Options

I love the idea of a MG 100% handled in Japan, however I think HK did the right move in trying to create and involve facilities based somewhere else too, and recruited genuine “foreign” fans at LA for helping TPP dev. I am sure V substantially benefited from this move since GZ.

          • AeroGre

Well TPP was made 100% in japan, the guys in LA didnt work on anything for the main game, just MGO3 which is probably why Konami doesnt see any use in keeping them around

          • Full Options

Mmmh, are you sure, things are a little more subtle. They worked mainly on online the last years / months, but also worked directly and indirectly on TPP. They worked on GZ and shared the same engine, I am sure a tremendously high quantity of fixes & hacks were exchanged between studios during GZ, TPP and MGO dev. 😉

          • Full Options

Ok, let’s shed some light about the real motivation for creating the LA studio.
You may de-facto figure out their overall implication in V through this gamasutra 2013 article :

It was a good studio. What a rotten way to die.

Kudos to those who get the reference

  • VenomSnake123

    It’s time for this GIF again… 🙁

  • My_FutureDream

My thoughts goes out to the staffs. As an animator myself this is something I fear the most in employment that is unfortunately quite common these days. stay strong and remember, you work in this industry because you love the work you guys produce for us.

  • Now is when Konami is starting to touch my balls.

MGO3; For how much time servers will be “open” this time? No update patches for PC? Where is the server now, Japan? No lag? -_-

The more news i read about Konami, the more scared i am about the “future” of MGO3…
I hope someone could make dedicated servers patch to play together.
I don’t care how bad or good is MGO (what i have been reading all these weeks), i like it.

    • Daburcor

Thankfully. MGO3 is P2P so dedicated servers being shut down won’t be a problem. Perhaps the reason for that is because they foresaw this happening. We may never know for sure, but it wouldn’t surprise me one bit.

      • Thankfully indeed. Thank you for the info, man, now i feel better. 🙂

      • JoJo

Not necessarily. It has to connect to the Metal Gear server before you can play the game. P2P is great, but it’s not as safe as we hope.

    • Full Options

Touch your balls ? Mines were slaughtered / mashed already… 🙁

  • Full Options

What’s weird is why did they attempted to keep the facilities as Konami for few months before finally deciding to shut down the whole complex ? Maybe to not impair V promotionnal phase or let’s hope it was even because in fact, most of Koji-Pro is on the move by themselves, hopefully staying with HK to work at Sony or somewhere else. Only few weeks of torture left for HK. I am sure tons of details are gonna be leaked in-between..

  • But will they update the PC version of MGO3 …

  • Tom Brearley-Smith

    Once again, this calls for…

  • Venom_Sina

BigBoss’ reaction to the closure of Los Angeles studio:

  • According to an email from Konami, MGO won’t be as heavily impacted as people fear, and they still have big plans for the game. Aside from the patch there will also be events in the future. At this point, they can’t say much more due to NDAs.

    • Schmojima

I was shocked for like a quarter of a second, because I read MGI instead of MGO…
Sounded like Konami did something to this community, which would be the perfect reason to fly to Roppongi and burn the whole thing to the ground… ^3^

    • Ralexion

Konami talks so much im going to take everything with a grain of salt.

  • BurntFM

Oh boy. Is anybody else really nervous about this statement “product development resources being restructured into a more centralized unit.”? All I can think of is the return of Konami ID in the next patch.

    • They are talking about the way they are going to produce and develop games in the future.

      • BurntFM

Right. I assume they will handle things in their Tokyo HQ so shutting down KojiPro L.A. Removing themselves from the U.S. stock exchange makes sense. That may also mean that they want to do things catered to Japanese costumers in a “centralized” market with their Mobile Games and Pachinko and Konami JP loves their Konami ID

  • Snake

Bye, bye, destroyers of Metal Gear Online. Hope you find a job soon far away from games I like.

    • Moises Ramos

tbt. Glad I’m not the only fool by their mimicry of CoD. At least is fun, but boring due to it’s non competitive environment that MGO 2 had.

  • No, please.

  • Venom_Sina

Ready at Dawn hires KJP LA members before Xmas. This is good, isn’t it?

Yeah, being on V let them put AAA 10/10 critics on their resume. I doubt they need one actually. I am sure a lot of people is trying to recruit them really hard, if not done already. 😀

    • BurntFM

The Order: 1886 was complete doodoo. It failed as a game, it failed as an interactive movie so they sure can use some talent at Ready at Dawn

      • Robin030

i just rented it for a few days but still i really enjoyed the order!

        • hunner

Agree. It seems like gamers are never satisfied nowadays. Every game i bought this year i really enjoyed.

FUCK KONAMI!!! Goddamnit, what the hell are they doing? The MGO Staff in LA did a great job and now this.
I really hope they are transferred and not fired…

On a side note: I love, really love the new swimsuit costumes in MGO. My female enforcer now is a joy to look at from behind. :DD

    • Snake

They did not a great job.

      • Schmojima

Why? I mean, why do you think that?
I quite enjoy it, to be honest.

      • Danny Patten

Hey, you don’t have to insult him. And no you can’t have the cat for bbq!

  • FOX

Well thats good cause mgo 3 sucks

    • Schmojima

oh c*mon…it doesn’t suck… it is actually not as good as MGO2, I give you that, but it really doesn’t suck! Why do you think so?

      • hunner

        Stealth camo everywhere

        • scarecrow

          CnD is ridiculously unbalanced also

          • hunner

Especially since defenders can use stealth camo

        • Tsitiko

No offense but are that bad that you don’t look for shadows?

      • N-Shifter

I don’t think it sucks either, it’s very young and had/has plenty of time to improve….well, it did – not sure how much it will improve now.

    • hunner

I also hate mgo 3. but people losing there jobs is more important than how i feel about a video game

  • This is actually a good news for MGO3, now it will be handled by the original team where the game will turn into the real MGO. With the petition going on for MGO2 and seeing how almost the majority of the Japanese mgo players don’t like mgo3, I presume and hop that they add the long requested features that the LA team neglected.,

  • Sure Konami Loves bad press

  • Kol Leqejza

if you close kojipro, there’s no reason to maintain kojipro LA. and MGO sucks, so no reason to fear anything.

  • Jav

But don’t worry guys, we have new swimsuits.

  • MrVux007

*off-topic* has anyone watched it? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pt8MkVAoqaY

    • Gatsu

Last bond movie I watched was Casino Royale >_<… I need to catch up lol.

      • MrVux007

        yes you do!!! 😀

      • Danny Patten

I enjoyed every Bond with Daniel Craig so far. They’re, in my opinion, the best Bond movies.

        • Ishmael

          quantum solace was horrible!

          • Danny Patten

Well, it is the weakest of them all but I still like it more than the pre Daniel Craig Bond movies.

          • Full Options

Ishmael, is it me completely hypnotized by Olga Kurylenko ? xD

Solace was not appreciated by critics, but I really enjoyed it. Maybe it is the new series format, with bonds needing a next episode, but Solace was pretty complete in terms of Royale’s follow-up, different environments… Sean Connery wise, I would say all of them. Moore-wise, let’s say most of them if not all. Timothy wise, I would say “License to Kill”-only-. Pierce-Game+Movie wise, I would say GoldenEye and couple of other Pierce-wise ones for movies. Craig-wise, Skyfall final “boss-fight” lacked 007 gigantism whereas I loved Javier’s interpretation. Solace lacked such boss gigantism as well. Royale was really smooth in all aspects. Craig is a top bond. The review is scary.. Will be out only next wed here… 😀 Yum

        007 has changed. xD

    • not yet! well it actually came out just today here on my country, i’ll try to watch it next wednesday, Skyfall was great

      • MrVux007

i adored Skyfall, dat ending was truly heartbreaking and great

        • Spectralbuttplug

I adored Judi dench’s acting. I didn’t even know she had such a pivotal role in the film.Fortunately I didn’t watch quantum of solace.Surprisingly I prefer writings on the wall than skyfall

  • Gatsu

Oh hell yeah, just a few days more <3… I'm soooo excited!

    • MrVux007

oh god,im gonna play two games of my favorite game series when i get home….now that’s the best “welcome home” gift for me….

OMG I haven’t even finished Mad Max or the Witcher 3 DLC and Fallout 4 is almost here!! I have to get my hustle on!

      • I know how you feel I can’t keep up. MGSV, MGO, BO3, LAST OF US, FALLOUT, MAD MAX and FARCRY TO COME OUT and a life and family. I need a body double .

  • Sockerfri

Konami fucking sucks. Good luck with your mobile games, you fucking assholes.

    Sorry bout cussing.

    • Mr. Sir Shpee

I’m sure it’s no issue, considering this is a website dedicated to a mature game series.
