Demon’s Souls. Very agree, is pure gold
The Last of Us. 150% agree
Dark Souls One of the best games of all time!
    Final Fantasy XIII Really?
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. In my opinion, the best ps3 exclusive along with Demon’s Souls
NieR: I don’t played it. I find one for 35€. Is worth?

    • Roman Spork

Last of Us is overrated, it’s just an episode of Walking Dead.

      • A lot of people think it’s a great game, doesn’t mean you have to like it but the term ‘overrated’ is pretty silly.

        • Roman Spork

Nah, with all the money that went into marketing the game it’s pretty obvious to see how it became quickly popular. Especially with the cliche zombie motif surrounding it. Anything today with anything zombie related and or having to do with making you have “feels” is bound to do well regardless of how well the narrative was written and or how the gameplay was.

          • * your opinion, not fact. Please remember that.

          • Roman Spork

Not just my opinion, dude. Other people believe so too. Maybe not the collective majority but a fair amount. Marketing plays an enormous roll in shaping the game’s popularity just like with other AAA games (even more so if it’s exclusive). Look at games like Destiny, it got over-hyped because of marketing even though it’s really repetitive and is pretty flawed . Add to that the annual expansions that cost $30 and you got yourself a game that sells well despite the major flaws.

          • Of course marketing plays a role, as it does with everything. That doesn’t take away from the fact that The Last of Us is a much beloved game by gamers and critics alike.

          • Roman Spork

You’re sorta missing my point a little.

          • Well, let’s just drop it then.

          • Roman Spork

Well, alright then. I guess I was a little to critical. Sorry for bothering you then. Happy Thanksgiving 🙂
(or post-Thanksgiving as I’m writing this)

          • Lewis

To believe in paid reviews in 2016 is the next level of stupid.

  • Punished Fox

    Final Fantasy XIII?! HAHAHAH

  • BurntFM

In my opinion Assassin’s Creed 2 should be higher on the list. The Last of Us being #2 is very telling of how much that game impacted people all over the world because Naughty Dog is the only developer in the top 10 that isn’t Japanese. That’s very impressive.

Still waiting to see MGS4 in the new Gen and Pc, as someone who skipped that console generation, an entire MGS collection would be a big incentive for me to get a Ps4

    • MGS4 is the only mainline MGS game that is only available on one platform. So maybe there is a reason for that, perhaps because the game was specifically designed for the PS3 architecture it is difficult to port. But yeah, it would be nice to have a PS4 version…

      • Mr.Pony

Yeah the architecture of that console is a real pain in the ass to get a backwards compatible software up and running. But if they don’t make the effort, that game is going to be locked away in that console. I’m a big believer of backwards compatibility and transition between systems when it comes to old games, and to lock such a masterpiece on a system that in a few years will be difficult to find is a real concern to me.

Iniciatives like GOG are something that I really appreciate and support, we already see some games that probably are either lost due to difficulty in finding their systems or either because emulators just can’t handle, or simply because they haven’t transitioned from previous generations. I think that all games either good or bad should be available at all times, I really hope that Sony in that department takes some notes on what XBox is doing.

        • It’s probably up to Konami rather than Sony or Microsoft. MGS HD hasn’t been added to Xbox One BC either, not yet at least.

          • Mr.Pony

Sure, its still up to Konami, after all they are the ones who have to do the work of preparing the game, but an easier architecture, or one with game preservation in mind, makes it easier and probably cheaper to get an old gen game running on current gen

          • Yeah that’s true but for the PS4 Sony tried to create an architecture that is easier to develop for and closer to PCs, and as a result it’s very different from the PS3 architecture, which is probably the reason backwards compatibility is difficult. But it would be nice if the PS5 had backwards compatibility for PS3 software.

If I had to choose, aside the gorgeous amount of DDR5, the most enjoyable improvement offered by the PS4 architecture, I would, without hesitation, choose the unified memory architecture between the CPU and a GPU hosted in the same chip.
PS3’s CellBE was indeed a very exotic architecture and even if it is hard to work on such, it can also have very substantial pedagogic benefits for developers.
PS3 architecture contributed to help many of them to better understand what is happening at lower levels by forcing them to manage execution homogeneously across various available processing units.
Many were yet of course well trained with multi-threading across available cores, but SPUs were something allowing more asynchronous execution, typically letting you have a small network of very powerful “mini-GPUs” sitting next the main CPU, and doing their stuff without annoying or having to wait for the CPU.
Mastering such beasts gives you an entirely new and more accurate vision of your real hardware resources, as well as better clues when problems occur.

PS3 architecture was therefore really difficult to master because you had to manage various memory areas (main, SPU’s and GPU’s), sometimes not sure in which it could be more efficient to store data before and after processing it. Although it was a good practice, letting some develop run-time layers able to evaluate through small samples (sent in real-time) which unit would better suit various type of processing before sending the job to them (a bit like CUDA or OpenCL).
This way some jobs in the game could sometimes be executed by the CPU or the GPU according to which one could return his small sample job faster than the other.

Regarding backward compatibility, there are also major commercial concerns.
Since Sony sell a lot of old systems too, it was proven not viable for them to have any kind of ascending compatibility between consoles. Too much efforts and always better to sell a PS3 + PS2 instead of just a PS3.
For example, when taking out OtherOS, Sony’s techies have never been really transparent about the official reason for dropping as well the PS2 support on PS3.
Some retail PS3 had a true E-Motion engine in it whereas other would run it by emulation. Maybe they dropped it because it was too difficult to maintain both versions, but I think there was as well important commercial concerns.
My first fat 60Go retail had a true E-Motion engine in it but for example, my MGS3 copy was crashing too often. From what I tested it was not stable enough (at least for some games).
I think like you that at least 2 gens are necessary to have the required horse-power to run an emulation in a stable manner. But of course we also need the manufacturer to actually have the will to do it.

        • Full Options

What’s stupid is that it indeed really was pain in the ass, but it is not so much anymore. UE4, CE3 and most popular engines manage to dispatch processing efficiently on PS3… The rest of the architecture is just out-dated for us as a target but a lot of TVs for example, embed CellBE..

      • Full Options

You nailed it. However, amazed how they managed to shoot TPP on PS3 as well.. Most would have just skip it for such big title..

      • Venom_Sina

There is another reason imo. A lot of features and scenes in MGS4 are designed specifically for a PlayStation console. For example the fight with Screaming Mantis has a lot of PlayStation-ish references, which makes it kinda unplayable on another system. Sixaxis, Dualshock, Memory Cards… all of them are exact references to a PS hardware. There are more, like the disc changing sequence in Act 4, or PS3 controller for MK.II/III. Sure, they can cut those parts and release it on other platforms too, but it would take the fun out of the game. I mean, most of the fun.
But you are right, there are technical issues involved, too. Maybe the engine of MGS4 is not very cooperative, maybe it’s too time consuming to port it for other systems (we all know about The Last of Us and its PS4 remaster. It took a year til we saw the game on PS4 and we remember how PS3’s architecture was back in the day.). I think that’s the reason for creating FOX Engine.
I think all of these reasons are blocking our access to a 8th gen version of MGS4.

    • Jav

      Mgs4k

  • moto hellogoto

ff 13 doesn’t belong on that list. I don’t understand Japanese players.

  • Full Options

My take, but seeing this list, MGS4 is the very first.

  • Jav

    Finally, I did it.

    • Thanks for your contribution soldier 🙂

Congrats / well done, man !

    • AlbertoBalsam/ShampooManLeguy

Glad to see your efforts comrade

  • PrinceHeir

Amazing taste Japan. I knew Uncharted would be top as well since I’ve been seeing tons of players in JPN from UC2 and UC3.

UC4 not so much. RE5 should be higher!! Almost all the lobbies in RE5 PS3 and even now on PS4, are only JPN players most of the time.

  • Mark

How did MAG get 11? I was late to that game so I missed out on the large game modes. However, I didn’t think it was nearly that popular.

  • Jav
    • AlbertoBalsam/ShampooManLeguy

Who the fuck is this guy???

More and more click bait by Geoff
    Thanks

  • AlbertoBalsam/ShampooManLeguy

    FINAL FANTASY XIII?!!!
    GUNDAM!!!
    FUCKING RESIDENT EVIL 5!!!!!!
The rest deserve to be on the list

    • Gatsu

I think RE5 is a great game. It’s at least better than the turds that came later and has Wesker also :D.

      • AlbertoBalsam/ShampooManLeguy

Well if you classify it as an action game, the story is pretty good maybe I just don’t like horror movie series that don’t scare me
One of the movies that scared me the most was a thriller
        No country for old men
I nearly pissed my pants and my heart nearly stopped

  • Venom_Sina

Yeah, Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls are my favorites. Glad to see them up there. MGS4’s place is great, too.

Some games… you know, I didn’t expect them to be there. I didn’t know TLoU is that popular in Japan, or MAG. That game was a mess back in the day and a lot of people left the game soon. It’s interesting that Japanese gamers liked it this much. Also Persona 5 just got out and we can see it’s on the list. This means Atlus did a fine job with the game. Can’t wait to play it next year. On other thing is about Skyrim. The game was terrible on PS3. Hiccups, crashes… sometimes it was unplayable. I wonder why it’s on the list 🙂 The game runs way better on other systems. And I’m happy for Yakuza. I’m a fan and I like this series to be recognized more, especially in the west.

    • Gatsu

There are quite many Japanese games on the list imo.

    • AlbertoBalsam/ShampooManLeguy

I was surprised to see BOII
I mean the story is clearly the best one (Goyer’s writing is like weather)
But the cock of doody name has such a stigma
      Also?
      FFXIII !!!!
I once said I liked it but not to this extent

  • Gatsu

Pretty good list. I’m glad to see some fav games up there :).

  • AlbertoBalsam/ShampooManLeguy

So this was posted before but I didn’t give any details
This vid was on the TGA site and was posted on vid.me
It has a low roar song and quite trippy visuals
So what do you guys think it is?
    https://vid.me/BRrs

    • Full Options

Not sure, but could be a small part of TGA’s intro this year. The titling looks pretty pro.
For the trippy visuals, they are in sync with the titling, so I guess this material is pretty dedicated to TGA.
Maybe they are just teasing us or maybe just simply shared between them part of the intro for work purposes, like to show it remotely to somebody else working on the ceremony’s setup ? Who knows ?

    • I’ve been told it’s fan-made.
You can hear an AI say “Render ??????” at 0:33

      • Full Options

Seems she says “render fast” or something.. It looks very well produced for a fan-made clip.. The text looks pretty much like official… Very well done if fake, but sounds too weird / very real to me.
Bah, we’ll have the answer next Thursday ! 😀

      • AlbertoBalsam/ShampooManLeguy

That’s the official tag line for TGA
See on Doritos pope’s twitter account

    • BurntFM

Don’t know what to make of that really. But the song is good. Here it is:

The only reason I own a retail PS3 is MGS4… You were talking about MGS4 or Demon’s Souls ?
