PS4 Pro upgrade patch for MGSV: The Phantom Pain available now

Update:

The PS4 Pro patch for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is available now. The patch also works for Ground Zeroes, but only the version that’s included in the Definitive Edition of the game.

Original story:

Konami has just announced they will be releasing a PlayStation 4 Pro upgrade patch tomorrow for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. This patch will make use of the upgraded hardware to deliver a higher visual experience, usually a higher resolution and some added effects. The exact benefits this upgrade will bring aren’t clear yet.

It took a while, but better late than never, and good news for those with a PS4 Pro. Also, the game is currently still available for free for people with a PlayStation Plus subscription.

Eh, good guy Konami still supporting MGSV after more than 2 years after release? What magic is this?! Heh, I remember a lot of hateful comments from 2015 when people said that after firing Kojima Konami is going to drop MGSV support instantly, just to shit on his legacy. And here we are, in the end of 2017, looking at new patch for MGSV. What a good company!

    • It’s just a resolution patch. Nothing more. Mod makers can already do 4K image. It’s not a support, it’s just an update for the current gen system that requires this as a standard.

“Good guy Konami” on the other hand plays with human lives at KojiPro by restricting access to health insurance (with 7000 companies in their hands with Kanto association) and not paying money to Hideo Kojima for the job. Not to mention about aggressive blacklist of ex-employees.

Indeed, what a Good company. I will never forget this. Like ever.

    • FabiiArt

Undirtunately you’ve got it all wrong I suppose.
Simple answer is: Konami isn’t able to develope a well thought out masterpiece on their own.
That’s why they’re milking MGSV with patches and so on, to keep it “up to date”.
It has nothing to do with being nice to customers.
It’s just the best they can do.

-Copy an paste, releasing assets, which were already there during developement.

“Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured” – Mark Twain.

Konami doing its job pretty well. So I’m not sure why you dislike Konami for amazing MGSV support.

Guys, you need to say nice things about Konami when they are definitely deserved some nice comments for their commitment. Say with me-e-e «Thank you, Konami-i-i!».

  • The funniest part of the Paris Playstation Press conference is that they showed all their portfolio, except for Death Stranding.

They even showed a small glimpse of The Last Of Us Part II…

but no Death Stranding. Like it does not even exist. xD

    • They still have PSX coming up. They didn’t show everything, Days Gone was absent too for example, and Dreams.

      • Dreams is a vaporware so far. Days Gone had a lot of footage at this E3.
Death Stranding had nothing this year. Sony even announced new Sucker Punch game (that looks cool btw)
but ofc, PSX will be about Death Stranding for sure.

        • Yeah and Kojima will probably be on stage for the gameplay reveal.

        • Johnno

Don’t think Death Stranding will be at PSX either. Kojima and co have likely gone into full submersion development mode. Which means they’ll be silent for awhile. It might be hopeful that Kojima may help Keighley out with a teaser for the Game Awards. But I believe Kojipro is in deep crunch time, and the next time we see the game will be E3 2018. And this time it’ll be vertical slice gameplay from a sandbox area. So I’m expecting it to be the show closer.

    • Mr.Pony

Damn, The Last of Us trailer is brutal as hell

      • I honestly did not liked it. From the directing standpoint it looked a bit silly. That little Asian girl with broken arm killed big dude with an axe and that woman shooting in the forest at night wasting all the bullets looked…. strange.

  • Day 1, because:
    1) Japan
    2) Sucker Punch
    3) I hope it is a stealth action hybrid like Tenchu.

    • Koba KarƎli

Devs did say it was an action/stealth/adventure game.
Lots of people wanted Assassin’s Creed in Japan, well, here’s something close to it.

      • Mr.Pony

here’s something (hopefully) better than it

        • HoxtoniteIsLoveHoxtoniteIsLife

          Eh not sure

        • Mr.Sixes

Sucker punch’s history of Melee has been very touch and Go, Their first game didn’t have it, Sly trilogy had very basic melee, infamous had a mash fest of one. Infamous 2 tried to incorporate it more but it was kind of mediocre and just more for style. Infamous second son (and by extension first light) made it more of an optional thing that really wasn’t that great.

So unless they really Hunkered down don’t expect much change.

        • HoxtoniteIsLoveHoxtoniteIsLife

In other words considering how good aco was , don’t expect it to be better

    • MrVux007

One thing is for sure, it will have stealth (cuz ninjas!).

      • Yes, it will have stealth, they confirmed it. Sounds awesome indeed.

First time i saw games like Order 1886 and Ryse: Son of Rome, i thought ” How the hell is this even running on consoles? ”

Then Uncharted 4 and Horizon:Zero Dawn trailers came in my reaction was…

    (ehem…. i mean)

So my Harry Potter nostalgia and my grumpiness from prolonged night shift (and cold black coffee) aside, i think i should be studying basic and advanced programming when i come back home…then and only then i might have some notion how the hell they pull stunts like this(tho i srsly doubt it since guys back at Digital Foundry and NXGamer are shaking their heads aswell)…

@fulloptions:disqus any reading-material recommendations would be welcome? haha

    • Full Options

Advanced programming may only lead you to understanding advanced programming.. It is of course important to study what is happening in our computers, just to finally understand that they are less magic than they seem…
So that what you need is not always technical training but keep artistic training on top.
Don’t sacrifice your stories creativity by thinking you need to be a great programmer before. Keep possibly both subjects on map, BUT :
Stay focused on the stories you’d like to tell.. Once they’ll be polished enough for your taste, you’ll notice that you really don’t need to master heavy technical concepts to tell them.
All the lectures I can point you to, are always specialized to isolated technical areas. Doing research in those areas may keep you away from writing a game in the end. Exciting too, but certainly less than writing a game.
I will answer any of your interrogations if I can, but please give more room to your genuine ideas, and write them down on your laptop on the sea. See ? no need to be back on the ground for that, you can write a game on your boat.
You can yet write the story and the game design. Don’t worry about the tech behind..
Choosing between engineering and story-telling is a way to go.. Trying to do both will cost you a lot more time (not impossible though, I hope xD).

      • MrVux007

“Choosing between engineering and story-telling is a way to go.. Trying to do both will cost you a lot more time (not impossible though, I hope xD).

Well I am a engineer by tittle and I can tell you hell of a stories after couple pints of beer. Haha

As for my technical knowledge, it’s probably on the same level as the average PC gamer (after all I did set up more than few PCs in my time).

But I always considered software knowledge to be more important than the HW functionality(I may be wrong ofc).

But regardless,I will definitely be studying some basics first then go little bit into advanced stuff…just to improve my understanding.

Ignorance is not a blessing in this case 🙂

        • Full Options

I’d love to listen to those stories, you won’t believe mines after a 6-pack.. :DD

You are not wrong at all. HW is nothing if compared to SW. The latter has infinite possibilities (our imagination), whereas HW is bound to our physics laws.
If you really want to catch it quick choose a low enough programming language level. Not too low first or you’ll catch a headache xD, but C/C++ should gift you enough for seeing what’s precisely loaded everywhere (specially C).
Try to focus on what’s happening in the memory and how poor basic arithmetics processing unit’s are able to compute sequentially, and you’ll laugh your ass off soon.. ;D
This will also give you a hint about, even if not optimally efficient, how fast our nowadays units can process our dumb instructions.. Unbelievable, we are fortunate they are that fast since we can not explain them clearly enough what we need.. ;D

        • Full Options

Thanks also for the cool words regarding anecdotes. ;D

I just wanted to add that you MUST put your stories on paper or ms-word, because trust me on this, you will forget some very cool ones with years, no matter how safely they are currently locked in your head.
Doing so will also allow you to improve them at several stages of your life with respective different and more complete visions.
I swear you that you will regret it in the future if you don’t note them down somewhere. Be careful.
          Happy creation brotha !

  • Johnno

    Hmmmm…

Del Toro is taking time off from Directing Films
    http://www.slashfilm.com/guillermo-del-toro-taking-year-off/

    • MrVux007

Every great mind needs some time off…it increase productivity, replenishes focus, solidifies memories and encourages creativity.

And ofc Del Toro has earned it.

      • Johnno

I’m hoping that he’ll hook up with Kojima during that time off.

        • NegaScott128

I mean, if the reason he wouldn’t act in Death Stranding is because he’s busy, then if he’s not directing for a bit, maybe he’ll decide to act in the game.

          • Full Options

I believe that even if his character’s story might be more central in the final game, having the physical appearance of Del Toro feels more like some kind of cameo-like move. Maybe I am wrong but I think they’ll probably not even percap him once, they likely just 3D scanned his head only so far..

          • NegaScott128

I remember seeing pictures of del Toro getting his arm scanned for Death Stranding, but I can’t find the picture right now. In any event, if the reason he wasn’t more involved was because he was too busy, then it’s entirely possible he’ll change his mind now that he’s taking a year off.

          • Full Options

His arm ? Hmmh.. missed this one.. Thanks for the info.
I just remember this shot, but aside not speaking in the trailer, his facial expression appear more like the result of morphing static generic humors / poses he might have maintain while 3D scanning his head, rather than having the accuracy of percap just like for Mads and Norman.

            http://www.metalgearinformer.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/Guillermo-del-Toro-3D-Scanning.jpg

          • NegaScott128

I could be remembering it wrong. I checked the KojiPro website and it had a picture of Norman Reedus getting his hand scanned that looked a lot like how I remember the picture of del Toro looking. So it’s possible I combined that picture of Norman with del Toro for some reason.

          • Full Options

No worries, I am wondering if Kojima will dare to stick his little green dots on such a Lord’s eminent face, haha.. Although I am sure Del Toro will be more than glad to do it for his friend. We’ll see what happen.. ;D

  • Oh snap. Ayako should not have done that.

    https://twitter.com/Kaizerkunkun/status/925160673637687296

Rumor: Lindsay Wagner could be an actress for Death Stranding. I don’t remember Kojima posting photo with her on twitter or anywhere else. Most of the time he does that. I don’t remember her posting this on twitter either.
But Koji wall has a small photo where she and Kojima are together. So… Something is happening behind the scenes.

You heard it here first at 10/31/2017

If we have gz bought first and then tpp we can’t have that patch in gz.
For me, the thing they need to fix in gz is the pop-in and the max number of soldiers in screen. Because they disappear.

    • Full Options

On a technical aspect, the 2 games are different in the sense that they are not handling the main and GPU memory the same way at all. Fixing that would imply to re-write & patch big parts of the GZ’s engine.
Enemies disappear because the whole Camp Omega geometries and textures have to be entirely and permanently stored in the memory. Level areas could’t not be streamed at this time. They gracefully fixed the problem for TPP, but did not have enough time for GZ.
The problem here was only the last gens memory size. In the rush, I would not be surprised if they did not even tried to adapt performance on next gens instead of leaving such settings the same on both for GZ.

Opening is very dynamic and it has gameplay in it like Phantom which is amazing!

Animation is Fantastic, music great, characters have amazing graphic and first scene with graveyard and Otacon appear with helicopter have stunning graphic with stunning animation! I just played a little but I want to replay already from the begining! XD

Still stealth game and sneaking is still the best but sneaking on battlefield all the time is very different experience which is awesome! I will let know when I will finish the game and what I think about it. For now its just the best and looks like it will only get better!

I already can say that MGS4 is one of the best MGS.
The best menu, probably the coolest bunch of characters of all MGS(in previous games there were 3 to 5 cool characters per game, but in this all characters are AWESOME! Akiba the best!), many different places, OctoCamo rules!, animation etc
            Awesome game!

While the upgrade isn’t breathtaking or anything it sure feels good to be back in Kabul 😀

    • MrVux007

Digital foundry did state that Pro patch felt “half-assed”.

But if anything, my sources tell me the loading time and already great performance has been improved quite well.

      • Robin030

        True and True.
The patch does feel half-assed but the game def plays even smoother with it.
Its just that a lot more would’ve been possible IMHO.

  • NegaScott128

Digital Foundry has analyzed the PS4 Pro patch. The only upgrade is resolution: the game now runs at 1440p instead of 1080p, with no other visual enhancements to speak of. Framerates are slightly better, but since 99% of the game ran at 60fps to begin with, it’s not much of an improvement.

  • Mr.Pony

Looks like despite everything Konami games section is making a good profit mostly due to the shift into mobile games it seems.

    http://www.ign.com/articles/2017/11/01/konamis-profits-keep-growing-after-mobile-game-focus?abthid=59f9d91f373f5eea6c000005

    • Full Options

I would also like them to present separately their mobile and AAA revenues.
They are always mixed and they are strangely shy at exposing Metal Gear sales… I am not meaning they are big nor Konami are specially hiding them, but the “company’s game revenue” score as they call it include AAA ones too, so…
I bet a substantial part of this profit these last 2 years is also quite well due to MGSV sales too… Perhaps not much but still… Shift to mobile games was probably the right move in terms of pure profit, but what an irony of fate if MGSV scores propels in the shadow even partially the calculation of this report then…

They should base all on mobile only results. AAA alone did not brought only 1% in(!?), to say it differently…
They said mainly due to shift into mobile, but did not mentioned precisely what scored what.. Say 80% profit increase due to mobile and 20% for AAA, then OK… but still 20% AAA …

      • Eugene Voldo

“No means no, Mr. Kojima. Your video game toys are too damn expensive! We have investors to please! We have obligations! AND we have a plan for a better future for our company! A future without YOU! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Your legacy is ours now! AHAHAHAHA!” – that’s probably how people think Konami’s management fired Kojima.

In reality you can check previous financial reports and see that mobile profits are growing from year to year. Yes, Konami don’t say much about proportion between AAA and mobile, but really, do you think that 2-year old game still sells like hot cakes? No, so naturally we should attribute this success to mobile.

        • Full Options

          xDxD Lol your little intro..

Nah, not hot cakes, but just wondering why Konami is always acting like Kojima is not selling a single one since 2 years now, hehe…
Do they have a problem with publishing those stats ?
I think yes. MGS is not a yearly published game. Sales of 5 years long production titles have a totally different wavelength…
But with them it is like MGSV does not exist at all… Specially since when we got the various ranking and metacritic scores, I might add..
          xDxD

  • IStealthierI

Ghosts of Tsushima sounds promising by idea, can’t wait for gameplay.
Spider-Man seems like it can dethrone the Arkham games.
God of War and Shadow of the Colossus looks like grand adventures.

But did you guys see The Last of Us Part II? The whole entire take was all in one-shot! You know, that thing Hideo Kojima likes to do? They did it phenomenally in The Last of Us Part II PGW 2017 Trailer. The little details in that trailer, the graphics were unlike any other title I’ve seen.

    • Gatsu

Yeah thanks for giving a more comprehensible twist on the news than mine . Here’s an upvote mate

  • GER READY BOIS FOR THE GRAND REVEAL:
P.S.: Kojima retweeted that. Obviously. DS trailers incoming.

Boss changed his twitter picture with “From Sapiens to Ludens” + “Loading”… ;D
      Loading WHAT ??? Hhhhhhhaaaaa !!

      • Lex Radu

        Decima Engine: Loading

      • Oh yes, and that picture is so sexy. My only problem that it is LOW RES SH… but the background color and font is cool.
Prolly Loading means that KojiPro will have a bunch of games in the future. This is an indication that KojiPro first of all a games company even though Kojima announced from the very beginning that they are interested in other media (movies, anime, short series and stuff).

Man, problem is twitter twitter’s image background compressing libs are just slaughtering any bitmap you’d upload up there… Whether you are a pro or not… Twitter SUCKS at that, look my profile, that’s the best I could get, but setting the right bitmap is pain in the ass… Not Kojima’s fault on twitter :

Remember when Hideo said that he was deciding between 2 engines, and 1 of them turned out to be Decima?
    https://youtu.be/hI8goBqqRTo

Of course you do, and looking back at this one, you can see that this is not decima, this is the other Engine, and i think it’s pretty clear that the first one with Norman was made in Unity, just like the first Adam.

    https://youtu.be/HaOOWK14pgs

That would explain why people though that “Adam: Part 1” was part of DS, because now is clear as ever that it is the same Engine.

    • The first original engine if I’m not mistaken was an original Sucker Punch engine. They also tested some technology on the quantic dream engine.
There were some tests for the latest CryEngine for that time.

      • Lex Radu

It does look more like Unity, cause Unity looks a lot like Fox Engine, and i thought that the Norman Trailer was looking like Fox Engine!

        • Unity can look very different depending on the assets and textures. Norman Reedus model is very realistic akin to Fox engine stuff is because Kojima is looking for photorealistic approach when it comes to lighting, shadows and real objects (photo scan).
Unity is not really well known for being that photorealistic. Sucker Punch engine on the other hand is photorealistic enough. See inFamous: Second Son or the latest Ghost of Tsushima trailer.

          • Lex Radu

I know, but this Trailer doesn’t look like that, they way is rendered and the lighting looks like the Adam short made in Unity.

Glad Kojima moved forward with Decima though.

          • NegaScott128

I mean, Death Stranding doesn’t look a whole lot like Horizon either. Kojima has a specific “look” he’s going for, and he’s using the Decima engine to achieve that look. But if he was using any other engine, he would still try and achieve that same look.

          • Lex Radu

True that, Art style the 2 DS Trailer look the same, but rendering and lighting wise they look different.
This shows that you shouldn’t rely on a certain Engine to achieve a Photorealistic look, you can do that in any Engine if you know how to make use of it’s tools, like Kojima does.

          • Full Options

Yes, exact, photorealism is not the exclusive property of a specific technology, but pretty much maths / linear algebra skills for writing very optimized frame budget-conscious / fast enough vertex and fragment pipeline effects that simulate how things are shaded in the reality.
Then those vertex and fragment programs can be loaded in any engine, with minor changes depending how geometry streams and textures are fed to the GPU by the CPU (for example, vertices positions, normals or face indices are not always sent to the GPU in the same order in a given engine if compared with another).

      • HoxtoniteIsLoveHoxtoniteIsLife

So they did accept Crytek’s humble invitation.Well I heard CE is a pain in the ass and judging by the type of development kojima is aiming , it is suitable

        • Full Options

I tested CE2&3 and the sandbox editor was quite straight-forward to use, whereas touching the core element of the engine is indeed requiring a lot of care and time to understand… But that’s the same for any engine.
At some point, they all become pain in the ass to work with because the real deal is always to tweak them in order to obtain a specific game design, often distinct from the one the engine was built around (eg. Unreal for UE, Crysis for CE, Doom / Quake for IDTech, etc, etc..).
Decima is probably as hard to work with, even if nowadays, all those engine’s editors have done tremendous improvements that save the coders a lot of time in all areas of development, whether in shading / rendering, AI, physics, scripting or geometry artwork export / import pipelines, audio, etc..
