No David Hayter in Metal Gear Solid V confirmed, reason will become clear later

The interview Geoff Keighley conducted with Hideo Kojima at GDC 2013 will be posted online later this week. Via his Twitter, Keighley let us know that Kojima confirmed David Hayter won’t be in the game. He also confirmed a lot of other things, but what exactly, Keighley didn’t specify.

David Hayter, who has been the English voice actor for Snake since Metal Gear Solid 1 in 1998, and for Big Boss in the later games, posted on his Twitter yesterday he had not been contacted for this new game. We can already hear Snake’s new voice during the gameplay demo, and now Kojima has made it official.

What the reason is remains unknown, but Keighley confirmed Kojima will clarify this decision during the interview. It might have something to do with differentiating the changing character of Big Boss from his younger self (Naked Snake), and also from his ‘son’ Solid Snake. For such reasons, Big Boss in Metal Gear Solid 4 was voiced by Richard Doyle, but he doesn’t seem to be the current voice actor either. We will find out more when the interview airs.

He’d better have a very good reason.

As much as I love David Hayter, I think this may be a good decision. Even though he did perform as Big Boss in MGS3 and PW the character still felt like….Solid Snake! There was always some issue in Mr. Hayter’s acting that biased him towards impersonating Solid Snake.

I don’t really feel that way, I’m already uses as Hayter as Big Boss. But the biggest question I have is: why not use Doyle? But maybe he would sound too old for this role.

    • Well Solid Snake is the clone from Big Boss so I guess it makes sense for their voices to be similar. Maybe he was directed that way during the VO sessions, and didn’t have much freedom. The reason I want David in this one is because I felt in PW. his voice could have fit better if they were in game cutscenes rather than that comic strip style; and now we can see the voice fit how it was meant to! I didn’t feel engaged in the story as much as the others because of the comic style. However once you get to final game were the cut scene is actually in-game I was so happy, and I was really into it; having a trill watching it.

I’m ok without having David Hayter, but i’m not ok not having Richard Doyle either. Why god damn it? Why? Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy???

All we can do right now is wait for the answer from Kojima.

hayter can quit voicing big boss when big boss loses the mullet and looks like an old man. at least i know the anticipation for this title isn’t going to kill me like waiting on MGS4 did.

  • Darrius

I trust Kojima-san enough to be cool with this if he did it for a reason.

I think we will get David Hayter in Ground Zeroes, which is the prologue to The Phantom Pain. The prologue, but not MGS5. Ground Zeroes is weeks or maybe a few months after Peace Walker but Phantom Pain (the real MGS5) is 9 years after Ground Zeroes.

During the coma, Snake changes. In the trailer we saw him without less muscles than before, his voice was different and I think we will see him become a villain/his personality will change.

Richard Boyle would sound too old, but he was perfect for Big Boss in MGS4.

Thanks, I made a new post with a summary of the interview.

      • ObsessedGeorge

        Thanks for the summary man.

  • If hayter dials back the gruffness of the solid snake voice, he is the only choice for an even younger snake if they do decide to remake the two original Metal Gear MSX titles into “solid” versions. I just felt like bringing that up again.

    • Nyxus

Yeah, that would be awesome. I would like Richard Doyle to do Big Boss if that were the case, unless Kojima would want to use this new voice actor.

No no no, this cant be. Not after so many years being the voice of snake. I hope this doesnt go through.
