Metal Gear Solid V gameplay from the first TGS 2013 demo

A few hours ago, Hideo Kojima and Yumi Kikuchi presented a new gameplay demo from Metal Gear Solid V at the Tokyo Game Show 2013.

You can see the over 12-minute long video below, or by following this link.

Update: here is the whole presentation in better quality:

In the demo, Snake infiltrates Camp Omega, rescues a prisoner and escapes by helicopter. It shows both new and familiar stealth mechanics, and we also see the tranquilizer gun make a return. The menu screen is also briefly shown.

Was there any footage of the online play?

    • Nyxus

      Not that I know of.

      • EnderMX

        Thanks for the reply.

So this is how will a PS3 version will look like (except for the FPS)?couse i didn’t see anything different from what they shown thus far from the previous trailers (witch were current gen graphics, said by Kojima) i know it was played on PS4 …but still im wondering how will PS3 gameplay look….i don’t want another MGR situation here 🙁

    • TheKastorian

Textures looked much better on the PS4 version!

    • Nyxus

This is PS4, but the video isn’t the best quality so it’s hard to tell.

I feel a little misled. The graphics in this demo are a far cry from what I saw presented at E3. I understand the video isn’t good, but from the animations alone you can tell that this is much more in-line with current-gen standards than what we’ve seen before.

    • ObsessedGeorge

I feel that the animations are executed in fast forward. Like, i think that the game rushes the animations. They don’t feel so smooth. Also the landing animation after the jump feels very off. Snake must land at least with a roll. He just jumps and stays there. Odd.

  • Markos

wow, so many negative opinions.. I agree with most of you but, overall, I really really liked what I saw. And I don’t think this is PS4; Snake’s hair was barely animated, and remember that PS4 has ‘tress FX’ tecnology from Nvidia, which makes hair a lot more natural. Look for tomb raider comparision with and without tress fx.

Very disappointing. Not only do the graphics somehow look WORSE on PS4, but they added a bunch of westernized shit that doesn’t belong in MGS. Health regen, tagging enemies, lack of UI… just ugh

We haven’t seen the HD quality yet. I will reserve my judgement of the visuals for a later post. However, I can safely say that the hair is current-gen and the whole thing didn’t look much different from what we have seen from PAX. Kojima already said that the difference between PS3 and PS4 versions will be mainly the resolution and fps so don’t expect much otherwise.

As far as some of the animations, yes I agree there a couple of them that I thought looked odd mainly when Big Boss jumps of the cliff. It is not the jump but the landing that looked weird. Secondly, when he throws the guard off the tower, the throw looked as if it was fast forwarded.

What we’ve seen from The Phantom Pain trailer at E3 in terms of animations looked much much better which tells me that the demo we have seen was probably from an old build.

Notice that the demo didn’t have rain so there was no lighting effect and everything looked really dark so you couldn’t tell what was going on. The game looked really good when the guard was shining the light while Big Boss was crawling on the floor at the very beginning of the game. Lighting does make a big difference in this case. Again I am going to wait till the HD version comes out and remember there is a second demo in the daylight so I am sure things will get clearer. Other than that I loved everything else specially the recruiting system. I lived bullet time, didn’t mind the health regeneration and loved the seamless transition between the cutscene and the gameplay and loved the weapon wheel too.

Let’s see tomorrow what Kojima has for us.

    • ObsessedGeorge

To those who say that the quality is the same. No it isn’t. Take a look at an HD video camera captured footage. I really like what i’m seeing.

      • Nyxus

Yes, and that’s off screen. We should wait for the official release of those videos (in two days I believe) before we judge the graphics.

      • solidmatt

OK George, you’re giving me hope.

  • coah

If this was a launch title on PS4 in US, I’m sure it would be rushed and have bugs all over the place. But its a system seller/killer app to get for console. I don’t see any other PS4 exclusives at launch to get me to buy a launch console. Watch Dogs is even multiplatform.

  • PrinceHeir

man i need to stop watching this 😛

it seems they’re gonna show even more footage in the coming months 🙂

i don’t want to be spoiled too much like MGS4 😛

    • Nyxus

So far we have seen just a small part of the game, mostly Camp Omega and some bits of The Phantom Pain. I hope they won’t show too much. And what do you know about what they’re going to show in the coming months? 🙂

      • PrinceHeir

        nah i’m just guessing XD

there definitely gonna show alot during gamescom and VGA(this one for sure)

        • Nyxus

Yeah, Kojima showed the new build of Rising and The Phantom Pain both for the first time at VGA, so it’s very likely there will be something this year as well.
