Kojima talks about Ground Zeroes: controls and pausing the game

On Twitter, Hideo Kojima talked a bit about Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes and the changes it brings to the series.

Less than 2 weeks till GZ launch.

MGS has been misunderstood that the control might be too complicated. Simply more buttons are available in order to change camera or actions that players are allowed to choose from. I’ve tried to config control for instinct play as much as poss.

GZ performs smoothly & conveniently like a rep of new generations’. Hard to go back play old MGS once u get used to GZ.

Metal Gear Solid allowed players to switch weapons without having to go to a different menu screen, which was different from what people were used to in those days.

Back in 90’s, switching from main screen to sub screen for weapon change was a mainstream. This may distract players as they need to switch different screens back and forth. So I invented the switch can be done in 1 hand by clicking over the game screen in MGS1. Made icons can transparent the background also. In MGS, I had chosen the special key config for quick change of weapon (chose key as u press button). No other game had done so it kinda made everyone anxious. Well, be careful in GZ because ur game is ongoing when changing ur weapon.

In Ground Zeroes, the game doesn’t pause anymore when you’re busy switching weapons, and the same goes for when you’re looking at the map or listening to additional intel via de radio. This means you constantly have to pay attention to your surroundings when playing the game.

In GZ, be careful when changing items, checking map or listening to WALKMAN since game doesn’t pause as in your real life.

Of course pause button exists that can be used even during the cut scene so you can go to restroom or have a break whenever you like.

However Snake in GZ can’t have a break, meaning can’t play game in pause status.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes launches on March 18 in the US, and on March 20 in Europe and Japan.
