Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain rated by the Australian classification board: high impact themes and violence

The Australian classification board has given Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain an R (restricted) rating, meaning you have to be 18+. As can be seen in the table below, it as been rated ‘high impact’ on its themes and violence, ‘moderate impact’ on sex and language, and ‘mild impact’ on nudity. To compare this with the ratings for Ground Zeroes: that game received only a MA 15+ classification, and themes and violence were rated ‘strong impact’, one gradation lower than for TPP. It got the same rating for language, but wasn’t rated for nudity and sex. All in all, it seems like The Phantom Pain will go even further in terms of shocking contents than Ground Zeroes did.

It’s not all too surprising given what we know about the game’s dark tone and what several people (including Kojima) have said about its themes. Looks like this wasn’t an exaggeration, with the game getting the highest possible impact rating for themes and violence.
