Kojima Productions discusses memorable lines from Metal Gear Solid 3, and Tamari cries over The Boss’s fate

During the 26th episode of Kojima Station, Etsu Tamari, Shuyo Murata and Kenji Yano looked back at Metal Gear Solid 3 while discussing some of the characters and their famous quotes. At the bottom of the screen, they displayed Tamari’s ’emotional gauge’, and it fills up as he talks about The Boss.

Discussing the memorable and famous lines by several of the game’s characters, they start with The Boss.

The Boss

• “I didn’t. I’m loyal to the end, to my purpose.”

This is The Boss’s answer when Snake asks her why she defected to The Soviet Union.

• “We have no tomorrow. But we can still have hope for the future.”

This is the line that makes Tamari’s emotional gauge max out. The Boss was forced to sacrifice her own life for her country, after she was exposed to nuclear radiation herself and unable to bear children. And yet, she still talks about having hope for the future.

• “There is nothing more for me to give you. All that’s left for you to take is my life, by your own hand.”

The Boss says this just before her final fight with Naked Snake, at the end of the game.

• “Let’s make this the greatest 10 minutes of our lives, Jack.”

This is the ultimate expression of love between them. These words were chosen by Tamari himself, but he still loses it when he hears them.

Volgin

• “Remember the Alamo.”

This quote shows his desire for revenge (it’s referring to the battle of the Alamo during the Texas Revolution).

• “Kuwabara, kuwabara.”

According to superstitious beliefs, saying the words will ward of lightning. At the end of the game, he refuses to say them, stating ‘who’s afraid of a little thunder?’, only to be stricken down by a bolt.

• “Yes, yes! Let yourself go! That is what I want to see.”

Volgin is sadist who loves to torture people as a means of gaining control over them and the situation. But ironically, during this scene Volgin is the one talking an revealing information, while Snake remains silent.

Eva

• “There… is your answer.”

When Snake first meets EVA he asks her for the password so he can confirm she is the real EVA. But guards show up, EVA disposes of the soldiers, and then she speaks these words. Although she might have actually known the correct answer.

• “I can fall in love – if it’s part of the mission. Even with you…”

Here it is hard to tell if she is saying the truth or not.

• “And… you have to live.”

EVA says this at the end of the game, in the message she left Snake on the tape recorder. This is one of the few lines by EVA where she is being truthful and sincere.

Ocelot

• “You’re pretty good.”

This is probably the most iconic line for Ocelot. It was actually first said to him by Big Boss, after which Ocelot repeats the line.

• “I’ve been waiting for this moment.”

After being defeated by Snake and criticized for his shooting techniques, Ocelot is back with a new chance of showing Snake what he is capable of. He’s equipped himself with a revolver, and wears the jammed bullet around his neck.

• “Reloading like this… it’s a revolution.”

Ocelot takes up Big Boss’ advice and switches to revolvers. He is thrilled by the way reloading works with these guns. According to Kojima Productions, this line was a tribute to the second and third Matrix movies, called ‘Reloaded’ and ‘Revolutions’.

Another interesting thing Yano brought up during the discussion is how he thinks Snake losing his eye in MGS3 could symbolize him adopting the leadership role from The Boss. He explained that in Georges Dumézi’s trifunctional hypothesis of European myths, characters are divided into the following three groups: rulers, warriors and producers. For unknown reasons, the rulers often have only one eye, arm or leg. Of course, Big Boss lost his eye during operation Snake Eater, after which he also inherited The Boss’ title to become ‘Big Boss’. Furthermore, in The Phantom Pain he loses his left arm as well, further symbolizing his role as a leader. Yano doesn’t think this was intentionally done by Kojima, but he may have been unconsciously influenced by it through things he watched and read.
