John Carpenter (writer and director for Escape from New York) didn’t want to sue Kojima ‘because he’s a nice guy’
Famous movie director John Carpenter spoke in an interview with Hollywood Reporter about a lawsuit against Luc Besson regarding Escape From New York (a movie Kojima took inspiration from when creating Metal Gear Solid).
Look, CanalPlus is the company that, with me, owns Escape From New York. They came to me and said, “Luc Besson ripped you off on Lockout.” Or Lockdown, whatever the hell that was. And they sent me the movie, and yes, he did. It’s the same story. (Laughs) I mean, you can’t do that, can you? You have to change a couple things. He’s after the president’s daughter? Come on. So I took him to French court.
But due to similarities, the company also wanted to sue Metal Gear Solid.
[CanalPlus] wanted to also go after the video game Metal Gear Solid, which is kind of a rip-off of Escape From New York, too, but I told them not to do that. I know the director of those games, and he’s a nice guy, or at least he’s nice to me.
Kojima is a big fan of Carpenter’s work, and often references it in his games. Carpenter knows Kojima’s work as well: his comments praising MGS2 can be found on a pamphlet included with the Premium Package.

The first Metal Gear Solid is basically Escape From New York. Snake is blackmailed into doing this mission, to rescue the president. There’s enough dirt in his file to put him away for a very long time. He has less than 24 hours to do it. He infiltrates enemy territory by himself in a one man vehicle, not to mention he’s also been injected with something that might kill him. Am I talking about the movie or the game?

Ok, you are right in some aspects, but I believe the situation is a bit more subtle than a pure and simple black / white scenario.
MG[S] like all MG’s have tons of references to cinema, as well as animes and mangas. Integrating those references in games was fairly and fortunately appreciated even by concerned producers.
You are free to isolate “Escape from New York” plots ones, but keep in mind that there are so much more references to other stories that NY’s ones become de-facto a slight homage rather than a true rip-off, even if several plot articulations have pretty obvious common details with NY.
Again here, Kojima is judged as a movie maker whereas he should be evaluated as a game maker, whom lonely mistake was to make the story part of his games enjoyed like movies.
To stay purely legal, the defense could be sarcastically sticking on the tech details of the law-suit, asking Canal+ if a movie is supposed to played with a joystick !? 😀
Kojima and Konami did not harm at all NY by stealing any part of the audience away from NY, specially in times where games were not that consummed. I think MGS even contributed in some extents to promote NY to newer generation which is good IMO.

Although the ones in the helicopter can be avoided if you open the iDroid up, don’t look at all by turning the camera around or if you don’t have Quiet as a buddy. Kojima has always been a pervert since MGS1 and applies it for both genders as well. haha
Naked Raiden was pretty unnecessary but was there to attract fan girls (said in one of Kojima’s past interviews). You even get a chance to see his censored penis too! Also we are shown constant close up shots of Old Snake’s wonderful chiselled ass in MGS4 as well. XD

Raiden’s nudity served purpose. The whole game was playing on both Raiden and the players wish to be Snake, by continually shoving in your face how awesome Snake and how unremarkable Raiden is in comparison. Raiden was manipulated by basically everyone in the game, but most important thematically he was manipulated physically by us the player to do what we want, at his torture we see him at his lowest point – being stripped completely naked and tortured by the bad guys. This is the first moment in the game where Raiden forcefully, without player consent or forewarning distinguishes himself from the player by keeping his dignity by cuffing his balls in his hands; directly changing fundamental game mechanics (such as attacking and sneaking and such)- all because he doesn’t want the player to see him naked. Quiet’s reason for lacking of clothing lacks similar depth, and doesn’t fit into the themes of the game at all.
Eva is another character who is heavily sexualised, but in the context of the narrative and themes, it makes sense. She was literally trying to bang Snake the entire game. At the game’s final moments they have a “moment” and soon after the player and Snake learns she was actually a Chinese spy sent to steal the philosophers legacy right from everyone’s noses – and she used her sexuality to achieve that. Eva is used to toy with the players’ own sexual insecurities to completely shatter a character they cared about – as she is the one who tells Snake about the Boss, and we all know that is what sends him down his journey of moral ambiguity. It’s like reverse of all the 60’s spy movies the game pays homage to and critiques – the hot girl used the charismatic hero to achieve her own goals and threw him way like a disposable bin bag, which was what shattered his beliefs, causing a seismic shift in his personality and world view.
So Quiet continually tries to seduce Big Boss – no, “the player” – because she’s in love? Why? What thematic significance does her plot-line have? True-love represents something stronger than standard communication – thus invalidating Skullface’s theory on language and stuff? I don’t know, and I can’t really remember the intricate details of Quiet’s story, all I basically remember was how amazing an actress Stefanie Joosten is. At this point I feel like i’m just rambling, I really needed to vent.

Japaneses love to make fun of perv heroes which is a lot of fun. What is fantastic here is that Kojima manage to mix Snake’s and the player’s perversion. Remember how Snake discreetly look at Eva’s curves in MGS3, that was principally Snake’s camera movements. I guess Kojima’s message is that Snake is a cool perv like Cobra or Ryo Saeba, and needed a very nice half-naked lady to increase this effect. 😀

Honestly I prefer Quiet’s nudity to that of EVA, Sniper Wolf and The Boss leaving the zips on their tips open, which I just see as immature coming from Kojima. However, those characters are written 10x better than Quiet. Even though I’m okay with Quiets’ nudity, I would have much preferred her to have the costume in her EXTREME mission on throughout the game cause the tits and ass gimmick in all her scenes was irritating.

For the record, “Lockout” is quite a fun movie – I’d refer to it more as “Die Hard in space” than an “Escape from New York” rip off.
I wouldn’t say it’s a rip-off. More of a homage. And Metal Gear Franchise as whole has been influenced by many things not just Western films. Metal Gear Design as a whole is based off Japanese Anime mechas from the 80s like Patlabor and Appleseed, Cyborg Ninja is based on many armored characters like Guyver, Karas. Even Solid Snake jumping on the Manhattan bridge in the beginning of MGS2 is obviously a reference to Ghost in the Shell when Major jumps out of the building and activates her stealth.
I’m glad Carpenter stop those assholes from suing. I guess Ridley Scott should sue Eidios Montreal copying Blade Runner in Deus Ex or Production IG should also sue Eidios Montreal for Gunther and Anna and The Matrix(even though the brothers themselves said they did started the project after seeing Ghost in the Shell.)

Well, much to my shame, I never actually got around to watching Escape from New York. But I watched Lockout. Is it REALLY a ripoff? Not similarities or something like, but a RIPOFF? If so, a pity, I really enjoyed Lockout as a one time entertainment.

Here’s some problems.
Cannot throwback grenades(WTF Naughty Dog UC3 has this), Doesn’t have dedicated servers, hopefully the supernatural stuff is locked in a mode or you can play hardcore mode that removes all of this.
Sprinting, jumping, sliding, using grappling hook looks amazing as hell 🙂
Uncharted 4 MP, Metal Gear Online 3 and fighting games are the only online games i play competitively.

the only thing right now that brings me hope is,that the MP is beta and player feedback will change all of that..i dont want another Uncharted 3 situation(my favorite game in the series still) where they had to patch the game 10 times,to balance things up…and even then you would hear people complaining….

I was thinking over and over about Paz and her story. i think that the message hideo tried to express was preety important. I dont know how to put it into words.. yeah i red about this yesterday, funny story, i love Carpenter’s work he’s a great director and some of his movies are part of my favourites, i like the pace of his films and i love the work on the music, sadly it’s been many years since he had a film as good as his older stuff, though the short “cigarette burns” he made for the Masters of Horror series was wonderful

Yes Rush was incredibly awesome. I am really fond of F1 and my first favorite pilot before Ayrton, Nigel, and Michael, was Niki. As kids we love heroes with heavy scars and Niki was a real talented demon on the track ! Rush showed me how opposite was his personality before the accident. He was over-prudent too wise, he was really the last pilot to deserve this. The accident transformed him in a Venom Genius of racing. I never heard about this side of Niki because I was too young.
If you like F1, the documentary about Ayrton is also exceptionnal.
Sorry edited it afterwards :). Yeah it is such an amazing movie ^_^, the rivalry between James and Niki was done so well :D. Truly enjoyed it and the high speed races, James’ no-fear attitude, Niki’s wise personality etc. Best F1 movie I have seen.
That accident scene though was so horrifying , but amazed that Niki stayed with racing afterwards.

Yeah the scene when he is wearing the helmet besides his burned skin… I still feel a not that phantom pain for the poor Niki.
