Konami details Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Companion App
Konami has released more details on the Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Companion App that will be made available on the game’s launch day, September 1st. The Companion App will work with the Xbox One, PS4 and PS3 versions of the game. Check out the full press release below.
Fans of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes may well have taken advantage of the incredibly useful “MGSVGZ Companion App”, which allowed players to access Snake’s iDroid directly from their mobile device whilst playing the game. If you enjoyed this functionality, you’ll be pleased to know that a companion app will also be downloadable for MGSVTPP! Find more info on what to expect from the App below.
- Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will have a companion app similar to the successful app for Ground Zeroes.
- Like in Ground Zeroes the app can connect with the main game to show the in-game map as you play. Acting as a second screen map in the palm of your hand.
- Using the app to navigate allows the player to see the map at all times and see more of the map on the screen than in game.
- The app also allows you to listen to all records / music that you obtain as you progress through the game.
- The companion app is only available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and Xbox One and will be available for download on September 1st, 2015, in time for the game’s launch.
If you want to be the best at tactical espionage, this app could prove invaluable in aiding your operations!
As you can see, the companion app won’t be available for the Xbox 360 and PC versions of the game.

Yea true but at the same time when your tablet or phone runs out of battery, you feel crippled because you invested more time enjoying the always on map and not learning to use the in game map. At least that’s how I feel. I hate the in game map.

What I’m saying is that it was not #1 in sales at the moment and received a spike in the last day or so, possibly because of the trailer’s release.

You have to take a couple of factors into consideration:
1)The first and the most important one is(from publishers point of view,especially if you are rly tight on the budget): “Where do we earn the most money”,and in MGSV case its probably on current gen consoles,so they prioritized it for those consoles and then later on for others(as much as the budget allows it)
2)”Time is money”,you have to also take into consideration that the PC version development was not started from the beginning as the console versions did,and they had a deadline to fill (in this case September 1st)
3)The reasons might be technical….to pair up your smart-phone/android with a platform or in this case a PC,it will take a lot of software development for certain HW(which in PC case is rly hard taking into consideration a variaty of HW),and then you have to prepare the app-support for that platform…
all in which is rly time consuming and takes a hit into the budget,and its a rly hard to develop…
But then again i dont see this as deal breaker for PC or Xbox360 folk,they wont be missing much (IMO)

Correct me if I’m wrong but it doesn’t look like you can manage Motherbase in the app. Just view the maps and listen to tapes.

Well on the map in game any of the buddies do appear as a green dog icon so I ‘d be very surprised if she didn’t.
I used the GZ’s app. It’s pretty good. Didn’t bothered with the MB minigame, however. Another thing i didn’t like is selecting something when your finger don’t cooperate with the screen. Sometimes it’s just better stick with the in-game iDroid.
And why not Xbox360? PC i can understand, but it will be released for Xone, from Microsoft and PS3, from old-gen, why not X360?
My guess is that the app needs a wifi connection to the console to connect with the game, and most 360 models do not have wireless capabilities unless you buy a $50 something wireless adapter for it, whereas the PS3, 4 and XBone have wireless capabilities right out of the box.

Lol I’m picturing a funny scenario where a guy(player) is listening while running on one of the gym’s treadmills when a torture scene starts playing and a woman screams violently. All of a sudden the headset slips out of the headphone port and like half a dozen other people hear the screams and call the cops. Player’s like (<__>) (<_<) then takes off out the nearest emergency exit.

So I was reading the excellent Gameblog.fr review of TPP (it was translated from French but nevertheless it was still coherent and legible and is probably the best review for TPP I’ve read so far), and they made a lot of interesting points, but I feel some of the finer details was lost in translation, would someone who speaks French be able to translate this? – it seems to hint that the game features a peace walker secret ending that ties up every lose end and brought out feelings of pure sentiment.

I don’t think it’s a really big deal, but if you don’t want to have some “details” about how the ending of TPP work, don’t read my translation :

For fans, keep going, don’t stop after 30 hours of playing and the first ending. MGS V needs investment and it is at that moment that the game definitely fit into video game history.”

Sorry, English is not my mother tongue and I can’t translate sh*t. Anyway, the reviewer seems to refer to a second ending, a la Peace Walker. Apparently the reason TPP will mark History IS the “real” ending. Something that will make you see the franchise from a different perspective, probably.

would not connect to the server for some reason, it just hanged on the web popup page, but they have put out patch today v1.03 and it has fixed it now, dont know why could not work on 1.02

Ha you should have taken your vacation Labor Day week. Well that’s what I did with gtav. I took it a week after launch to ensure that I get to play it my full vacation.
I picked one day shipping so hopefully gamestop ships on saturday and it gets here on monday

I guess some people like the immersion.
It’s not like you only use the small map, but for instance, I’ll have my phone attached to the controller with purpose made clamp and it gives you constant real time awareness of things you’ve marked like enemies etc. I’ll still use either the main map or the tablet map to call in the chopper, mark waypoints etc.
It’s just an added bit of immersion and it’s tactically useful 🙂
I find the in game map to be too hard to accurately use for stealthing. That being said I’m not going to be using the app either, for me it ruins the immersion and is kind of ridiculous to have an “companion app”.

Eventually, I currently don’t have a PC good enough to run TPP max settings, but in a year or two I will be buying one, I know I will be a little late (lol little) to the PC party, but I will get there, after all who would 100% TPP only once? lol.

Well, I can give you this but, honestly a 5” map just so you can watch it while running.. At least I gotta admit that its cool they made it accessible though. I saw there was some sort of Mother Base “mini-game” in the GZ app, it could be nice to make it so you could manage MB in TPP with the app, now THAT would be useful.

I am saddened by the fact that there will be no support for the PC version. I’ve decided to contact KONAMI’s support. I don’t really hope it will change anything even if enough of us complain but it can’t hurt. One thing for sure is they can’t know how much the community hates something if we don’t voice our opinion.
Here is the mail I’ve sent if you want to use it as a template. I might be slightly too polite for some people’s tastes but I firmly believe that respecting your recipient is the first step in a good and healthy communication:
“I want to express my deep dissatisfaction with the recently announced lack of support for PC for the MGSV:TPP companion app. While it is not enough to warrant any kind of boycott of the game for me, it paints the company in a bad light and will surely negatively affect my future purchases of KONAMI games.
Not supporting those platforms is not the real problem though. The real problem is that knowing that the game will be released on five platforms the company announces support for three and gives absolutely no explanation why the other two are omitted. This shows a disrespect for the players and customers and publicly announcing *why* the support is not given and *when*, if ever, it will be added would be something that would show the customers that they are not wallets to be drained of money, but real people who have expectations and can get emotional about games.”

I think I’m the one that is TOO polite, you are very direct. I think your complaint is perfect.
The reasons are technical, you cant pair your ipad with your xbox 360 at all and the process for PC is very tricky, and then they have to implement it into the game, and because theres so much variety in computer software its just too time consuming. It also isnt included with the game, its a separate free purchase entirely, so they arent robbing you of support.
PC should be the easiest platform as that’s what they developed The Phantom Pain directly on isn’t it.
I could be wrong but im pretty sure it was developed for consoles and then ported.
Nah Kojima stated in multiple interviews that it was developed on PC and that the game would therefore come to PC at some point.
Every game engine on the face of the earth develops games ON a PC, but not all of them develop FOR the PC, it does not matter what it was developed ON only what it was developed FOR, that being said the PC version is probably the most direct port of the game.
But all in all this doesn’t really have anything to do with the app in anyway, the technical difficulties getting a mobile app to work with a PC game has nothing to do with whether the PC version is a good or bad port, for the Xbox One and the PS4 there are already systems in place to allow such a thing, but the PC they would have to create their own, and they are not doing that, hence no app for the PC version.
From what I recall, and to quote wiki, “The Fox Engine is a proprietary cross-platform, cross-generational game engine” so the PC version is not really a port. It’s just a build of the same project targeting PC, the same you can build the same project to multiple platforms in Unity or Unreal Engine.
That being said, as I mentioned in another post, it might be simply that they are using some feature which is present only in PS3, PS4 and Xbox One to add the mobile-integration and they couldn’t be bothered to write another interface to make it work for PC.
I hope that one day they will be bothered enough to actually add that support :).
According to the play store and app store the GZ app works with 360 [1][2] so I don’t buy it being impossible. The same for PC – you can create an HTTP server on iOS and Android, so it’s pretty likely you can setup a socket server which can be accessed through the local network which should be more than enough to ensure connectivity between the two. I am more inclined to believe that they are using some magic voodoo provided for those three platforms and they just can’t be bothered, for various acceptable but unexplained reasons, to provide a separate implementation just for PC.
But heck, even if it’s the technical reasons, they could’ve at least wrote “xbox 360 and PC versions are not supported due to technical limitations on which we will elaborate soon” or something like that.
I am not really mad or anything, I am a little disappointed because I was not able to use the GZ app and really wanted to give the TPP one a try, especially that my fiancee will be watching me play so she could get engaged more. Primarily I want them to be more open with their customers (of which I am one) and that is the point of sending them that email.

You have to use smart glasses with the Xbox 360 version. Idk what that even is. And they would have to make sure all drivers are compatible
As a side note, how did the head-transplant-doctor-suing-konami end? Was there any closure for this matter or is it still going behind the scenes? The last information I can find is from April or so.

I wish people adhered to the release date, we now live in a time where you can stay in line for a couple of days to buy a game DAY ONE and it won’t matter because there are already a ton of people whom have been playing the game for a week.
I don’t care when or how I play a game I like or will like, but TPP was a different story especially how Kojima does his games and his stories, I wanted to take part in the crowd that played TPP and was discovering it, but it has reached the point now where people like me whom wait for an actually release date are the last ones to play and enjoy the game, now I’m honestly depressed, it really sucks not being able to be part of a “day one” crowd when such a thing no longer exists, you have to live in a none “mainstream” country and you will get the game a week early. It won’t matter what I do in TPP I won’t be exploring it with others, they will already be finished most of it and gone, I really wanted to play TPP with the world, but instead now it will be like every other game I play, where some people have played it other haven’t, it is no different then If I picked up the game a month after release, I wanted to be able to enjoy the mind fricking plot same time as everyone else, not to play it after the whole internet has read about it last week. I don’t know what I should blame, this overly social and interconnected society, or the complete assholes out there with no sense of understanding and break street date.

Yeah, any “mainstream” country will abide by the release date, but there will still be a few places which have no idea what TPP is and release it early without knowing, lol. Gotta keep my nose clean so I can experience TPP without much knowledge about the actual story.

I to God it’s true that the ending of the game was removed for not just the boot camp but all pre release versions and will be accessible via day one patch… As selfish and entitled as it seems and much as I hate day one patches, I hope this game has one so everyone has an equal (somewhat) equal.
I agree, people should only get to play the game when it’s released. The world we live in gives small groups tons of chances to play early before most fans can, I don’t like what the gaming world has come to, this may be one of the last diamonds of gaming coming from kojimas mind. The update notes in the iOS App Store (the capitalization there was autocorrected in. Surprised it didn’t add a TM sign as well…) say that the update was just for bug fixes. So they probably wouldn’t hide anything else in there without advertising it.

I only had a ps3 when it purchased and finished GZ. Since then I have gotten a ps4 and GZ, and I wanted to play it a few days before the 31st but I’m unsure which GZ data will get transferred to TPP. If I had a choice I would choose the ps3 because I’ve spend more time unlocking everything.
Do you think you get to chose which GZ data gets transferred?
Think you should be able too. Chart acts like ps3 can be put in rather than ps4.

Does any of you remember when in interview in 2013 Kojima talking about companion app, he mentioned that you will be able to create your own missions? What happened to that, will we get that feature? That would be awesome and would increase replayability even more. I remember mission creator in Tenchu 2 and I loved it
I might use the app if I can manage my Mother Base or my FOB using it. It didn’t work too well with Ground Zeroes for me, so I’m not incredibly keen on using it as a map for the game.
I really hope they add extra functionality to the app and let us manage mother base whilst on the go.

I’m sure he’s just doing his job but I still can’t help feel bad for the guy. He and the folks at Kojipro have been working their tails off working on this game for the past 4 years and lets not forget about the awesome Fox engine as well for God knows how many years before that. All that time, energy, effort,and passion that went in so that each and every player can, on the day of release, be able to enjoy the MGSV experience they worked for being undermined and straight up ruined for some poor folks during just the last few days before it comes out. It is truly a sad and deplorable situation.

Can’t believe that the cycle is finishing, i still remember playing metal gear on NES with muy brother when i was a children, that game leaved a mark on me, years later i saw on a ps1 demo disk that metal gear had returned!!! Today “Psx Extreme” was released. It’s a Polish console magazine popular in my country (Poland). I bought it , I checked the score and it is very good.

This will be a close fight. One thing going for Witcher 3 is that the game would remain fresh in people’s mind for longer time due to the constant support of the developers as well as expansions being released soon. One is 10 hour and second one is 20 hour long. I’m torn who to choose for GOTY.

If you like battle/war themed games it will be mgsv but if you prefere swords and magic it will be witcher 3. For me mgsv will be Number 1 because I like the series/saga more. I played Witcher 1 and 2 and I must tell that this is not my favorite lore. I like mgs lore more. For me mgsv on 1st place and bloodborne 2nd.

I cant help but getting annoyed when people whom get to play the game early on – such as Yong – start to bring up negative sides. I mean, I know they are supposed to review the game and all – good and bad – but I just get annoyed. Those f*ckers got to play it early! Everyone else has to wait.
There is only one small spoiler ( sry ). He mantioned one name. A person that is not famous in mgs story but that person appeared somewhere. But i will not tell You. I will write it if admins give me permision xd BTW: it is not very important character to be honest…

I also found a Finnish pre-review, who managed to play 30 min but didn’t finish the game. So couldn’t give detailed scores, but he did praise it very much :]. Was it MGS2 that had a metascore of 96/100? TPP nearly there as more scores will be added to the site.

Maybe some of you could help me. I’m on my very own “Full Metal Gear Run” where I play every MG and also get every Platintrophy for those who got one. Now I finished MGS2, 3, 4 and got my Platin. All I’m missing now is Peace Walker and Ground Zeroes. Peace Walker I’m done 99% and only missing one trophy! Its the Trade Trophy which you get when you trade a soldier with someone else, saddly I can’t find a single online player to trade with me, so if anyone could help me getting that last trophy it would be totally awesome! I’m playing on the ps3, the trade would probably take us less than 5 minutes, since I really don’t care what soldier I get and which Soldier I give to you. Hope its okay that I posted this here!

so, who is everyone’s favorite character and why? I have always liked ocelot most, just because regardless how cocky he started he always idolized big boss and stood for what was right and wanted fair fights with boss and didn’t cheat and when volgin was going to kill him he stepped in and just as a character he’s always been my favorite.
Between, Ocelot, Big Boss, The Boss, Solid Snake, I have a hard time picking, I would probably pick Big Boss as being my favorite simply because of the personal connection built up over many games and tough journeys. But of course Ocelot is the main character of the series 😉
My favourite is Solid Snake. He has this purity to him and never gives up to reach his Goal. I love that. He reminds me more of the Boss than Big Boss does.
Yeah, after all Big Boss threw away the life and choices of The Boss to live his own life, he would not make the same choice as her.
Having said that, I’d enjoy a The Boss game :O

Big Boss, because I like stories of men going down the dark path and seeking revenge. After that there is probably Ocelot too, just ’cause he’s cool and dangerous as hell. But I also like Raiden with his complicated backstory and all the mindfucks he went trough in MGS2 and his transformation afterwards. Apart from them, I’m pretty excited about Quiet and what she’s all about. After all, a few reviewers said, that she has an interesting backstory and story in general in TPP, so let’s see. Man, it’s really hard to just have ONE favourite character in the mgs lore. It’s practically impossible, but yeah, Big Boss is my favourite.
I also enjoy the twisted dark sides they turn to, ocelot transform to another person mentally and boss turns into a “demon” both just amazing turns and I love seeing the change this game will show that amazingly I bet.

I think Rex has the best design so far. Of course, Sahel will get his rockets-in-the-head ratio’s (no worries) but in term of design, I keep sticking with Rex… Ray was more organic-looking and very cool but Rex always looked more Robotech-cool (to me).
I think it has more to do with the anthropomorphism of the new Metal Gear, both in appendage scale and the way it moves. I don’t care about the gun but the stuff that looks glued on to make it seem more with the time period of the game, like the batteries, despite it obviously being the most advanced MG in the series.
The first MG could not be either than a 2D picture. I guess Ray was too pushy on organic features, not enough “mech’ed”, too fluid, like an animal which was KP wanted, but look at Mk. II, the most deadly MG on earth…

Anyone have any good marathon tips? This is the first game I plan on marathoning with 4 days off work starting the 2nd. That gives me the evening of Sept. 1st to dl everything, transfer all saves, set up companion apps, and enter codes for exclusives and start thumbing through the guide. After that is minimum 40hrs of gameplay over 4 days. Good plan?
Don’t rush through it, take your time, you don’t know how many games I passed in a week or less and it made me think they were way too short. So don’t rush it.
I don’t plan on rushing, just unlocking as much as possible while I don’t have anything else to worry about. I plan on relaxing and enjoying but I’ll be damned if I don’t enjoy this at maximum. haha
I’ve got none, But I recommend not over doing yourself with speed, play the game in a relaxed mood, don’t feel the need to rush anything, of course if you want to finish story first you can set up priorities of main missions over side ops, but just set up a way of playing so you play as much as possible while still being relaxed about the whole thing.

OH I got one. Set up a good sleep schedule, where you get enough sleep but not too much. Also have a good amount of easy food around to eat so you don’t use a lot of your time making food to eat.
I suggest meal planning for the four days. I’d make a few days worth of chicken and rice/veggies or what not so that all I had to do was reheat it. Gaming marathons are all about time management and who wants to prep food when they need to be fultoning bears.
The closer TPP gets the more I theorize about TPP due to how people say how amazing the story is, and how it changes everything, lol.
What I like in Kojima is that the story is always an option (always a top-fair one). Video game is something that seduce him more than movies (let’s dare saying this). A person that spent all his life with what he introduced in this industry has our passion.
Do not post screenshots of unseen parts of the hospital sequence… It is not allowed, sure can feel hyped if get it early but MGI stays clear of them for now…

All of these early releases just kinda kills the fun of the launch moment. I’ll be thinking the moment I get the game “damn, hundreds of people (it seems) have already played and beat this.” I hate to sound mean, but I wish they would keep it to themselves. I have been following this game for YEARS now and I feel like I am too big of a fan to be the last person to get the game.

You have to realize that statistically the people who already own the game can’t possibly be over 5% of the people that will play the game, the developers and testers and reviewers already played through the game so I don’t mind someone knowing the game before I do, and I can’t feel the same because I know that the majority of people who’ll play this game will play it together at launch, I know it makes you feel like you’re very late, but in reality, they’re very early, we’re not odd, they are.
I understand. But I am seeing this stuff everywhere I look, lol. I won’t stop talking to my MGS friends, but that means I have to be constantly exposed to braggers and their early copies.
These early releases are saddening. The earliest I will be getting mine is the night before. I don’t understand why shippers and retailers can’t follow simple release date procedures. I personally know the manager of my local GameStop and even they stated the earliest they can release is the night before.
Sure is, but we just gotta hang in there. It’s the same for most Finnish stores, they usually do a midnight release. I think for the game to launch on September 1 was what the developers etc were planning, but it never works anymore as shippers/retailers don’t know what day it is.
I live in Missouri and from what the manager stated corporate won’t even allow the game to be touched until at least 9 pm the night before….
I asked a Gamestop person recently and he told me their store, at least, isn’t even receiving the game until Monday afternoon anyway. So at least they’re not… like… playing it in the break room all weekend?

I was initially not as excited as I should have been for this book considering what an awesome job they did. I JUST received it but with just peeking through it, this thing is FULL of mgs goodies and details on Kojima himself. This is even great for old fans that may know much of this stuff already because of how well everything is put together.

All i will say after seeing somke new Unofficial footage (NOT SPOILER, but delete it if you think is it) is that the Graphics even on PS4 are above what we saw at GDC 2013, and that Stefanie Joosten is a Wonderful Actress, HELL, she might be the next Cara Delevigne, the Next Model turned Actress!

I’m not about to spend a ton on a PC when all my friends are on consoles and I enjoy my console the way it is. But I get what you’re saying. Hopefully someone with a baller ass PC uploads all the cut scenes after release. Sometimes nothing beats watching hours of cut scenes on YouTube haha

Plus, the PC version is the one that has all the features crucial to Hideo’s Directing, like the Focus that the Fox Engine was praised by at GDC 2013, the one feature that Kojima Productions praised during the panel, and made it clear how impotant that feature is for the Fox Engine, and how it is the next step in Video Game Cinematics, making the Virtual Camera look and act more like a real Movie Camera!
PS: Hideo also praised PC as a Development tool and Gaming platform over the last 2 years, so i’m pretty sure that the 100% “A HIDEO KOJIMA” experience you will get on PC, and GZ already showed how the Focus changed the way the intro felt, as on PC you don’t see Chico’s face at first due to the camera being focused on Skull Face, which made the Chico Reveal scene have a bigger impact (Also the XOF Patch dorpping, and then focused on the FOX Patch.

To prove you that i’m not Bulls*ing you, i will give you this. Arkham Knight, Watch Dogs and AC Unity, as Games, they are great, but i wish no one would buy those Games on PC, and instead buy the PS4 version, as the PC versions of these have worse graphics than the PS4 version, which doesn’t make any sense (Especially Arkham Knight) and are really, really bad optimized, which means that you will get the worst both Cinematic and Gameplay experience if you buy those on PC!

Yeah, seems like no one got sent a review copy at all. I was reading and watching some of the reviews/Q and A sessions over the last few days … and it looks like all the media outlets and other gaming journalists went to play at the 5 day boot camp.
Kojima did all he could to keep the ending a secret. Sending copies out to the wild could have spoiled it early. I don’t think they worried about bad scores haha.

So I was reading the Meristation review (poorly translated from Spanish) that mentioned various interesting things – like he seemed to be 100% adamant no one actually completed the game – but of course I believe some of it was lost in translation:

He also seemed to give new info on how side missions work but Google translate made it incomprehensible
