Metal Gear series lifetime sales now at 38.6 million
During the latest Kojima Station, the studio’s official web series, Kojima Productions revealed the current combined lifetime sales of the Metal Gear series. At this point, 38 600 000 (38.6 million) copies have been sold worldwide.
This means the series sold over a million copies since the last update, in February of this year. Most of those numbers can be attributed to Ground Zeroes.
In this week’s episode, the staff looked back at the series as a whole and MGS1 in particular. Writers Etsu Tamari and Shuyo Murata talked about some of the most famous quotes and characters from the game, as well as its themes.

Does it deserve it?
Does the pope help pedophiles get away with their crimes?
The answer to both…is Yes.
I’m a proud owner of every canon Metal Gear game out there! I wish for Kojima and the MGS series to continue having a successful and a profitable life, because when others played it safe because of the success of their games, Kojima took each sequel a step further every time without hesitation.
So less? GTA V alone sold over 30 million copies. Something is wrong in the world -__-
GTA is an exception. But yeah, Metal Gear games sell well, but it’s not one of the top selling franchises.
The GTA series in total is at about 185 million. Yikes! but those games are awesome too. Both Kojima Studios and Rockstar games have created amazing franchises.
GTA appeals to the whole world. They’re no sequels, everyone, even casual gamers will buy GTA. They will say “GTA? We can steal cars and cause mayhem? Sure buy.”
Big 38, huh?
How do you guys feel about Kojima bringing an apprentice to direct the future of the series? Do you have any expectations?
Pretty much have all the MGS games in both Japanese and English.
Ground Zeroes JPN and Rising Special Edition also came last week.
Have The Legacy Collection JPN then US then HD Collection US then PS2 games and all.
To be honest, this is probably one of the few franchises where i’m willing to spend extra on it. Normally i just wait for definitive editions of other franchises when i have a huge backlog(which i have right now)
Still 30 Million seems low for a 25+ year franchise. Then again, stealth games are still considered niche just like horror games so i don’t really mind it.
Congrats to the franchise!! I initially had a falling with the franchise(just like other franchises like Gundam) due to excessive games with minimal and sometimes backward improvements.
But after playing Ground Zeroes and even watching Gundam Wing and Destiny HD, i finally found interest once again for these franchises.
I can’t wait for Phantom Pain and Reconguista G 🙂
