Ocelot voice actor Troy Baker answers fan questions: working with Kojima is ‘mindboggling’
A few weeks ago former Snake voice actor David Hayter held an AMA (Ask Me Anything) session in Reddit. Now, it’s Troy Baker’s turn. As you all know, Troy Baker is playing the role of Ocelot in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Here are the Metal Gear related questions he answered.
Troy Baker and Hideo Kojima at last year’s Game Awards in Las Vegas
Question: I’m a huge fan of yours as well as the MGS series. How is your experience doing the voice of Ocelot? Did you do the mocap of him gun spinning? You’re pretty good.
Troy Baker: It was split between an actor in Japan doing the body, and me doing the voice and the face. I LOVED saying that line.
_______
Question: I just wanted to ask, how did you become the new voice actor for Ocelot in MGS5. Did Kojima come to you, or did you audition for it?
Troy Baker: Chris Zimmerman (who’s the performance director) approached me about it, but I had to audition just like everyone else, and thankfully Kojima thought I was right for the role.
_______
Question: How is it working with Kojima-san?
Troy Baker: MINDBOGGLING. He’s an absolute genius.
_______
Question: Can you tell us a bit about Ocelot’s personality in The Phantom Pain?
Troy Baker: Not without spoiling the game. But it’s definitely an ocelot you will recognize.

Not much, but it’s something, eh?
I think troy baker is insanely good at this, be it Joel from TLOU or Ocelot in this MGSV everybody’s talking about these days… 😀
Ocelot is definitely one of my favorite characters
He’s my favourite of all time.
I noticed they (Kojima Station, and now Troy Baker) keep saying they had to audition for their roles like everyone else, but did Kiefer Sutherland have to audition for the role of Snake too? Because I find it very unlikely since… Well… You know… It’s Kiefer Sutherland lol.
Sean Eyestone once implied during an episode of Kojima Station that everyone in the cast went through auditions: http://www.metalgearinformer.com/?p=14118
“Troy had the right look, he had the right voice, and he of course has the acting skills. So that’s how we arrived at Troy, and everyone else in the cast as well.”
I remember. I was there when you posted that Nyxus =).
My only real question is, did Kiefer really had to go through the same audition like everyone else did to be fit for the role? Or was this set in stone the moment he was approached? Kojima’s a true hollywood buff, and Sutherland is a big name that’s experienced in military drama, that you simply just don’t deny lol. That, and Kojima carries him around in the back of his pocket everywhere he goes (Gamescom, TGS 2014, VGA 2014) lol.
Well this is the only thing we have to go by for now. Eyestone’s words seem to suggest that there wasn’t an exception made when it came to casting for any of the actors. Of course, he doesn’t literally say Sutherland had to audition, but if he did not, that would contradict Eyestone’s words at least to some degree.
True. I’m incline to believe Sean Eyestone. I’m not calling him liar at all, since he’s always been genuine, and obviously 100% more credible than a random fanboy on the internet with suspicions, but just the thought of anyone from Konami’s talent scouts going “Sorry, Mr. Sutherland. We decided to look elsewhere. We wish you well in your future endeavors”, after being approached by Kojima with Avi Arad’s recommendation and being instantly immersed, seems unrealistic to me lol.
I think 24 was Kiefer’s audition ;)… 😛
That actually makes sense lmao.
Also he was already like Big Boss xD!

i couldn’t help but think of Kiefer’s drunk pictures lol. hope they don’t have that in common too haha
Haha ;D, yeah I guess we’ll see in TPP xD .
That’s what I alway thought.
“Definitely an ocelot we’ll recognize”, can’t wait to see what this animal does during TPP! Troy will kick ass in the role of Ocelot :D. Also thanks for not spoiling anything Troy!

I love Troy Baker’s work.He knows what he’s doing.I have great memories with his awesome work,”Tales of Vesperia”,”Saints Row 3&4″,”The Last of Us”,”Bioshock Infinite”etc…
Long story short,he’s great!!
Troy Baker is a really talented guy, people complain about him being in a lot of games and I understand it. But nonetheless this guy always delivers a great voice acting.
He looks like any normal guy but then he speaks… dang.
Yes indeed, he is able to record a Conversation between Batman, Joker, Two Face and Robin in 1 room by Himself, that is an Achievement.
This man…
I little bit screamed girly when I saw that photo after scrolling. sometimes fangirlism…
…
I’m writing this comment just because it makes me uncomfortable that ^ that is the last comment on the page in case it makes it come true. Yes, Kojima has driven me to inventing superstitions.
Is it weird that I just readed this with the voice of the doctor from the trailer? LOL
no, we all do it now, the hype train never ends.
Not at all I did too 🙂
Dear god….I do it too. Never realised until you pointed it out.
cool info now when are we gonna get an AMA with Stefanie Joosten a.k.a. Quiet?
Can’t wait!
