Big Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain announcement coming within the next 48 hours
Brace yourselves, Metal Gear fans. Kojima Productions Japan just tweeted this image:
The announcement is coming Wednesday March 4th at:
- 6AM PT (West coast)
- 9AM ET (East coast)
- 2PM GMT (Europe)
- 1AM AET March 5 (Australia)
If you head over to the official site, you can see the countdown in real time. You can actually click on the Phantom Cigar, which will speed up the time. But don’t get too excited – this function is ‘unavailable’, the iDroid tells us. Well played, Konami.
IGN is also teasing ‘big MGSV’ news, planned to be unveiled at the same time, together with a special message from Hideo Kojima. It seems very likely the announcement is regarding the long awaited release date.
Update: Looking through the source code reveals the words ‘release date’ and ‘preorder’.

I’m super hyped right now. A week ago I was playing MGS1 again (the liquid fight is hard as fuc*) less than a week ago I was playing mgs4 again. Right now I’m playing mgs3. I cannot be more hyped for this game to come out.

I played through 1, 2 and 3 and just started Peace Walker. Then I’ll move onto 4. Hopefully the release will be soon enough for me to start GZ again the day before release.

Thanks, I’ve never played PW properly so this is basically my first proper playthrough. I’m worried about it being too different to enjoy but the story seems cool up until now.
Bro, I was just like you the first time I played PW, at the start is a little bit weird getting used to the gameplay, but once you do is one hell of a game, believe me I bought the hd collection back in 2012, and I didn’t like PW gameplay. it wasn’t till the legacy collection came out that I played PW properly.
the story is the weakest part of the game. gameplay is solid. and in co-ops it’s just great.
why this odd order?
Well I wanted to play Solid’s games but not too long ago I played mgs2 so I didn’t want to play that again and mgs3 because I have a lot of data saves and I wanted to clear one so I can play it from the very beginning, then play peace walker and GZ just before TPP comes out.
I don’t really care if it isn’t the release date as long as it isn’t something like the chicken hat.

Holy shit, this bodes well for the PC release. I’ve been crossing my fingers so fucking hard for a simultaneous PC release since I don’t have a PS4. PLEASE let this happen, I would be so happy with that news.
Be wary though. If you look at the CSS code there’s “.releasedate” and “.releasedate .pc” which, to me, implies a separate date. I hope I’m wrong and that it doesn’t mean anything, maybe they’ll just have the same date for both but if that was the case then surely they’d just put “For PC and consoles on blah the blahth 2015” and use the .releasedate for all references to date. I actually built a gaming PC especially for this game -_- but if it comes out for PC later than PS4 then it looks like I’ll be owning more than one copy.
I believe you are wrong. The “.pc” and “.sp” classes seem to represent the platform they are being viewed on, so I think in this case, PC means Desktop, SP means Mobile (smart phone?).
Just take a look at the “.bg” class on the main page, which has the background with Big Boss’ head on there. If you inspect it, you will see that the “.bg” element is displayed, the “.sp” element is not.
Take a look at the background filenames and the images themselves, you will see where I’m coming from.

But does this rule out that PC and Console versions will come out at the same time? No. However, I do see that the filename for the preorder image (which will replace the “2015 OUT” image) starts with “cd_”. Take that as you will.

The steam update is nothing serious. Its more steam than konami. The kojipro crew said they were done patching the game back in January has to put resources towards back to work on mgo

Oh my F****NG GOD. I can’t explain the genuine excitement I’m feeling right now. They’ve never done a countdown for anything else have they? It’s usually just “we’ll have a little more info for you.”
Adding a countdown to this implies a release date announcement. Holy craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap. I’m so happy to see this. I was genuinely thinking that we’d hear nothing at GDC. I’m going to hope that Kojima does what nobody has done with a AAA game and announces it for like 3 weeks from now. More likely it’ll be 2-3 months. Any longer than that and I’ll honestly lose my hype a bit again but at least we’ll know how long the wait is.

I saw someone say that almost all MGS games have released less than three months after the date was announced.

I do know very well some of them and they are just convinced that the game comes out within next two weeks. I just don’t mean anything with this, but they are also the only ones I know convinced that Venom is Gray Fox. I think I’ve realized that there are two really separate ways of thinking between us fans. The realistic way and the dreamer way, that use the “Kojima is always trolling” to always have their expectations up with what they desire. And that must be really really frustrating.

What I’m sure is we are playing Venom. I am sure that Venom was previously known as Big Boss because Kojima has stated that so many times. The game is meant to be like that, no matter what “No-Big-Boss lovers” desire. I’m saying I am sure of it because I am 99% convinced we are playing Big Boss. Still, in that 1% left, Gray Fox is not even the fifth character I would be thinking of.
I agree with you. I’m 99,9% certain we play as Big Boss because Kojima has been telling us these years that. It’s about his downfall etc, him becoming a threat to the entire world.
I leave that 0,1% for Kojima’s skillful surprises, like in the case of MGS2.

IF this countdown was announced a few weeks ago I would have been very exited. The last bit of hype died for me a while ago. You guys remember when there was going to be a “big” announcement during the Christmas Episode of Kojima Station? Yeah…good times huh? Yeah, I’ve made the same rule. ZERO internet until I’ve learned the full story and got a good amount of side missions finished. This is probably the only game where I won’t even look at reviews before I play it. I don’t need some ignorant, snarky, hipster reviewer pointing out the “flaws” in Kojima’s style, by the way those “flaws” always turn out to be genius in hipster’s eyes. It just takes them around 10 years to realize it.
Something else I’ve wondered, that I’d like to do before release, what do you all think will be the tech that everyone makes fun of but then turns out to really exist or almost did officially exist in the military? Critics ALWAYS mock Metal Gear after release, claiming that the game was ruined by the “magical” technology that Kojima “shoe horned” into the game. They’re wrong. They’re idiots, I’ll summarize why.
MGS2: some critics said that drones with cameras were impossible for the time the game was set in. (¬_¬ really? How stupid are game critics? It’s a radio camera with a fan stuck to it while at the same time they overlooked Vamp.)
MGS3: they said those hover platforms were impossible. Turns out that tech existed since before the 50s and they were really stable.
Peace Walker: they said that fultoning was absurd and ruined the game. Some people said the same about 5. These people probably haven’t seen the military’s fulton test video where they literally fulton a sheep into the sky and return it to ground unharmed, (it’s on YouTube and it’s HILARIOUS and kind of upsetting) which is why Kojima did it in his gameplay demo I’m guessing.
MGS4: People said his suit and the mech robots were absurd when the military now has a suit almost finished and also have a robot that can run as fast as a cheetah and there are other robots being used in field!
The MGS team obviously do their research on the military so it’s silly to make fun of them the way the media ALWAYS does not long after a new game releases. I’m thinking of writing a full article on this subject in way more depth, if people think that it’d be something they’d like to read then let me know. I need to practice my writing and this is a subject I love.
More on MGS4: “Enhancing mood” with chemicals to make soldiers happy and content on the battlefield was actually discussed in public around 2005 by mainstream scientists, they talked about how it’s probably immoral and unethical but the military is already testing it with drugs and conditioning. So if they had nano-machines, yeah, we’ll be able to do almost everything, they will seem like magic and all I can say is that I hope that Kojima’s nano-machine head will be floating in the sky above us all laughing and shouting “NANOMACHINES SON??? NANOMACHINES SUN!!! BWAHAHAHA!!!” and he’ll start shooting laser suns out of his eyes. So let’s stop mocking MGS. You look stupid when you do it you hip dicks.

Same here, I love this site. You’re right about this series being a masterpiece. I wrote on Reddit the other day that this is the only game series that has scarred me emotionally in a way that only movies, music and novels have done. No other game comes close to what I felt playing MGS3 and 4. If TPP reaches that same level or above I’ll cry as hard as I can. I’ll be shooting compressed water from my eyeballs like superman’s heat vision.

Most of you Guys are gonna roast me for saying this, but I wasn’t feeling Ground Zeroes. I wasn’t even bothered about the length, it just didn’t feel like a Metal Gear game, and the controls felt wonky. The direction of the game to appeal to wider audiences has me worried. Now I don’t know whether to chance it? because I wouldn’t only be getting MGSV, it would also be a PS4. What do you guys think?

ps4 is best console out and worth it if you play any game. As far as MGSV I been on it since metal gear in 80s. then mgs came and changed everything. than mgs3 came and did the same. every few games Kojima evolves it all. So if you really feel its change thats a good thing. Times changes. If not we’d be stuck on 2d nintendo graphics and MGS would never change. If you think of it, Snake was super slow in past recent games. Being the greatest solider and that slow never made sense. But i can say that about alot of upgrades in mgsv. lets not dive too deep. Think of it like this. You going from a ps3 to a ps4 if nothing changed why upgrade? we all have opinions and yours isnt wrong, no matter what anyone says on here. But if you a fan of the series and just love gaming. MGSV and ps4 is 100% worth the buy. Unless you not paying the light bill than its pointless. LMAO Priorities come first and mgsv is going to be one of the best games. So yes most of us who enjoy games and mgsv will tell you go for it…. enjoy
I’m a Metal Gear Baby, it formed a great part of my childhood. I am, admittedly, if it isn’t broke don’t fix it kind of person. When changes have been made in MGS in the past they were good calls, because they were evolving, and not subtracting. I think MGSV will be limited on last gen, which is my reasoning for wanting it on PS4. Kojima San has always blown my mind with most of his games, so maybe feeling this way is good, because hype have killed games for me before. I will say this though, some of the concepts in terms of gameplay has serious potential in MGSV, it’s nothing like I’ve ever seen before.
Agree with everything except ps3. Graphics and fps are only issue for last gen. Games like mario always good right? not my cup of tea but they are great games and graphics always cartoon. So fps will be the test for last gen consoles but thats why you spend the money for a next gen console… Agreed about Kojima, He always delivers. MGSV TPP should be no exception.
Well maybe is because you didn’t play Peace walker and didn’t really feel the loss of your MB and comrades. the ending of GZ was superb and something that I think had not been done in a MGS game, I didn’t feel the way that ending made me feel since Liquid Ocelot burned “big boss’s” body in Europe in mgs4 . For me PW controls felt too weird at the beginning but once I got used to them, it turned out to be an awesome game. The PS4 is a great console and with TPP, the amount of things one will be able to do, the story, the multiplayer and also the graphics. I’d say go for it
It’s got a Call of Duty vibe to it, this is one of reasons why I’m worried! Controls is something MGS has always nailed, they don’t feel properly calibrated in GZ, but I think it will be addressed in TPP. I liked the controls in PW, especially the CQC, it felt fluid.
Well everyone has their opinion and that’s fine. But for the gameplay I think is because GZ didn’t have a tutorial of the controls, for me is like they simplified and enhanced the controls and CQC. I mean now is just too easy and no so complicated to CQC someone. I know PW had also good CQC controls but it was originally a game for the psp.

Agreed, I love every other MGS game and played them to death, peace walker being my second favorite, but ground zeroes was off, WAY off, that being said it was off….. ok GZ was bad because it in itself was a bad idea and was butchered, and they are problems with TPP and there will be more we don’t know of but most of the problems with GZ will be fixed. While TPP just like GZ will be more directed at a wider audience thus dumbing down certain aspects for no good reasons it will still have a huge array of amazing features and just like every other MGS game (including my least favorite MGS4) will be ground breaking, so we already know MGSV TPP will not be perfect but it will still be mind blowing amazing, and while some fundamentals have changed and some things will not feel like MG I’m sure a lot of it will and even not the game itself will still be good, so in conclusion, yes you should buy it, hopefully they will announce a bundle tomorrow with the PS4. And while I find it hard to recomend a any console to anyone because I’m goona be honest here both Microsoft and Sony are retarded and I would rather not deal with either but a PS4 is a good choice because you won’t be getting the piece of crap hardware that is the Xbox One but even though the PS4 is the best hardware wise you will have to put up with Sony’s lack of software/software knowledge and their ability to never support anything, but the PS4 is the better console and Sony is the lesser of two evils so it will be worth it to get a PS4 if any. (Anyone is allowed to like anything my thoughts on the consoles are simply my thoughts and opinions, despite any facts I formed those opinions on I am in no way disapproving of or insulting anyone who thinks otherwise). So yes I think you should, it is a chance but one that will pay out positive either way but the kind of positive it is, is the chance you are taking.

It is possible that Hayter is in the game for a cameo with Solid Snake, but it is only a slight possibility, due to the nature of Hayters none return and that if there was a cameo with Solid Snake I doubt they would use Hayter due to the fact that Snake would be so young in MGSV. So while there is a slight possibility I won’t be getting my hopes up, I mean they already had Kiefer running around in GZ saying nostalgic classic lines in the MGS1 mission despite the fact that it was Hayter that said such generic lines and made them special.

Well, we saw a glimpse of that with the Deja Vu and Jamais Vu missions. But they did the smart thing and made them available for all systems. I don’t mind things like these ones being exclusive. weapons, staff, boxes(I’m sure it’s just going to say amazon.co.jp) but if they do something like Exlusive Missions I won’t look at KojiPro the same way ever again.
I mean a DLC is always good to continue game so it feels fresh.

MGS TPP is the most anticipated game of 2015, I doubt they need that much marketing. I doubt they will release this month but between now and June is a good guess.

Its pretty much confirmed for sept 1. Now as mgs fans lets not turn in to dogs here. We bark and chase cars all day but if we catch one we wouldnt know what to do with it anyway. All this crying about wanting a release date and we got one. I dont want to hear you cry now. You barked, chased and caught the car. Now you dont know what to do with it. Diamond dogs represent our fight. Mgsv. Tpp sept 1. Be proud soliders.
So what do we do for that long now?
Go to work, school, church, gym, you name it. Spend time with love ones. Read or write a book. Learn something new. Life is short. You have to live. Like mgs1, mgs2, mgs3and mgs4. At the end they always remind the players to live. 7 months go by fast. Find things to enjoy and live snake.

Somehow, i’m happy that they said the release date already and for once so we don’t need to struggle our heads, but, waiting another 6 months is too much.
Maybe others will be playing Batman and other games in summer meanwhile, but i only will buy this one, so the waiting will be “longer” for me.
