Jay Basu to write the Metal Gear Solid movie

Movie website Deadline reports that Jay Basu has closed a deal with Sony Pictures to write the Metal Gear Solid movie.

Jay-Basu

The movie, announced in 2012 in celebration of Metal Gear’s 25th anniversary, will be produced by Avi Arad and directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts. Micheal De Luca will be production president.

Earlier movies by Basu are The Dinosaur Project, Fast Girls, Monsters: Dark Continent and Song of Songs. He also wrote the novel The Stars Can Wait.

  • Golgari

Well… His list of things is not that impressive. Without Hideo Kojima as supervisor and other KojiPro writers I’m not sold yet.

Although Sony Pictures are good when it comes to movie industry.

    • Pillbugable .

Especially with adaptations. Just look at Amazing Spiderman 2!

      • Kol Leqejza

        i hope that’s a joke.

        • Pillbugable .

Don’t worry, Amazing Spiderman 2 is, in fact, a joke.

          • Kol Leqejza

            what a relief 🙂

  • Theo Heisenberg Constantine

never heard of this guy before could be either he is undiscovered talent or he is a shit writer. so im mildly concerned but then again im going into this movie expecting the worst.

  • Braden Gunn

There’s only a few people I’d trust to write a Metal Gear film – Video Kojima, David Hayter, Christopher and Jonathan Nolan, and maybe a few of the people on this site.

This guy, I’m unsure of, if he plays it safe and sticks mostly to the games story then I’ll be happy enough, but I think if this had been given to the right people we could have had something truly special on our hands.

Good luck to Jay Basu though, hope he does his homework.

    • NegaScott128

I remember hearing that Kojima worked with David Goyer on a script when the movie was first announced. What Deadline isn’t clear about is if he’s been hired to polish up that script, or write a completely different one. If it’s the former, then I’m all for it. It means Kojima had at least some direct involvement with the film, and Goyer isn’t a super-great writer anyway. But if it’s the latter, we might have some problems.

      • Jak

Goyer kinda sucks, but at least he has a track record of working on successful films (though I feel like he kinda owes his rep to cowriting TDK). This guy though, who the hell is this? his imdb makes it sound like the only things he wrote are shit.

        • ThreeMadFrogs

          Goyer is an overrated writer.

      • Braden Gunn

Goyer can be good with the right co-writer, and when it comes to Metal Gear who better to co-write than Kojima himself.

Personally I imagine Kojima wrote a rough draft of the script, and was going to come back to the film after finishing Phantom Pain, but as soon as Sony saw the kerfuffle between Konami and Kojima they probably thought it would just be easier to get a new writer in, instead of having Kojima and Konami come to some sort of agreement on the film.

        • Kol Leqejza

i don’t think that kojima was given any job in this movie.

he’ll be consultant maybe. if studios knew what would be good, they would let him write & direct it.

  • Vegas

WOW, Jay Basu will write the Metal Gear movie? NO WAY! It’s good news, right? Like, tell me one movie that he wrote that was bad.

Seriously, I freaking challange you to watch one of these movies. Because I won’t.

  • ThreeMadFrogs

Sadly, I have low hopes for this film. Never heard of this writer before (which, granted, doesn’t mean much), Avi Arad is an atrocious producer. And with this whole Konami/Kojima things, if Kojima isn’t involved it’s almost dead on arrival.

  • Crazyface29

Only hope that can come out of this is that he knows the games well and hopefully doesnt take Rising into account.

  • Shalashaska

    Ahann….
    http://www.reactiongifs.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/seriously.gif
Ummm.. doesnt konami have to like share the rights to let them make a movie ? Im assuming Konami knows that this guy is responsible for their franchise’s movie? im not very familiar with the movie but ok..SONY and Konami must be working together on this, right ? I’m gonna hope he does a good Job. Goodluck to him..
According to IMDB these are the ratings..
    The dinosaur project is 4.7
    Monsters is a 4.5
    Song is songs is 4.6
and Fast girls is a 6.2

    • NegaScott128

I’m not clear on what the deal between Konami and Sony Pictures contains, but I’d assume that Konami would have to approve of at least the final version of the script. Beyond that, I don’t know.

      • Shalashaska

        true that.

    • Raymondius

Call me crazy, but I think you’re wrong. We should judge the guy for his scripst and not the whole movie. http://deadline.com/2015/03/sony-playstation-jay-basu-metal-gear-solid-leviathan-fox-x-men-1201400987/

      • Shalashaska

I know. I know It sounds like being an A-Hole but come on..
You know what.. i’ll try and search if i can get DVDs of this guy’s movies to check them out.. and let people know.. IF I can find these movies in DVD stores near me

  • Cartmangus
  • Geara

I just looked at his IMDB page…
My expectations couldn’t be much lower…

    • Joaquin Romero Victorica

    • prothy

It’s looking more and more like just another video game adaptation.

      • It will probably just be a mediocre action movie at best, which is a real shame because the series has such potential to be a great movie.

        • Raymondius

Sure it has. It should be something we can’t forget, but all we are going to have is some shooting and some cool CQC. And don’t get me wrong, I want CQC and tranquilizer rounds, but I also want a film that makes me think, ’cause that’s what MGS does.

  • #AHIDEOKOJIMAGAME

Umm…haha I’m sorry but I think there’s a typo here. You spelled “David Hayter” wrong.

**LOOKS AT ARTICLE** **LOOKS AT SOURCE**

    Oh Shiiiiiiiiiiiiitttt!!!

  • Adamska

No expectations for this motion picture. Sony already produce five Resident Evil movies, none of them a really good movie, but I admit enjoy two.

I believe in The Last of Us movie because Neil Druckmann, writer and creative director, is highly involved. There’s no way a MGS movie works without Kojima. NO. FUCKING. WAY.

  • Solidus

Odds are this guy was just the cheapest they could get, because this film isn’t getting off the ground and there’s no point bringing in someone who is proven and expensive for a film that has a low chance of going into production.

  • I have a very bad feeling about this……

  • LuxAlike

    I’ll make the funeral arrangements.

  • FMercenary

Will Snake get caught in the film? Will he have a cardboard box? Will this film be taken seriously by everyone involved so it can be naturally good without being gimmicky and/or cheesy as hell?

  • Venom_Sina

    Where is David Hayter?

  • Silverius

    NOOOOOOOO HAAAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  • juppez

God the mgs movie is gonna suck.

  • PrinceHeir

Meh, Give me Anime with Production IG Studio doing the Animation.

    • #AHIDEOKOJIMAGAME

Hey I’ve been binge watching Ghost in the Shell and I can’t believe I made it this far in life and I had not seen this series until now. It’s amazing. Momoko is YES!!! So cool. Curiously, it made me think of this trailer.

      • Gatsu

I wonder when is Cyberpunk gonna release, it looks like fascinating sci-fi which I love :). Scifi ftw!

      • ominonarepus

that song! Archive have a cool mood :3

And this one, is not the same band, but is the same kind of joy

      • PrinceHeir

Watch the upcoming Ghost in the Shell Alternative Architecture which compiles the four ARISE movies into TV series with added new scenes and tied to the upcoming new movie.

    • hnngg. that would be so beautiful.

  • kirtanloorii

$20 says this movie is going to be just as bad to the Metal Gear games as the “The Last Airbender” movie was to the show. They are probably going to have Steve Buscemi as the new Snake.

    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/90/Steve_Buscemi_2009_portrait.jpg

    Oh goodie!

    • #AHIDEOKOJIMAGAME

Your argument is invalid. Steve Buscemi fits right in the MGS universe.

      http://blog.saveapathea.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/crazyeyes.jpg

      • kirtanloorii

With a pic like that, how can I disagree?

    • WhatTheJuicay

nah its going to have a hot young cast of 20something year olds. Its also going to have a love story to take away from the 3 action scenes. the rest will be all talking.

    • ObsessedGeorge

I always thought of him as Otacon when l saw him.

    • Zlatan

I actually think he would give a good Psycho Mantis.

    • Geoff

Steve Buscemi is an amazing actor so they could do far, far worse.

      • ominonarepus

He’s usually a supporting character… but my god, what a support!

I grow up seeing him as Mr.Pink, Donny or the crazy guy in Con Air (the best thing along with Cage’s wig)

        • He’s the lead character in Boardwalk Empire, which is an awesome series by the way.

          • Gatsu

Damn, I need to watch it completely ;D. Started first season quite recently and been great, but then got occupied by games and other series 😛 …

  • XIFF-5

IMO, CGI movie for MGS or nothing…
If the roles played with actress , it won’t feel MGS at all instead , it will be hilarious to see mgs movie with real actress.
CGI movie with better graphics than MGS 5 and same voice actors will be awesome!

  • MichaelPayneV

Now i have already lost all my hopes for this Movie.

  • 4energyplaylist .

That’s why Konami gets rid of Kojima.

Kojima don’t want to do MGS anymore, Kojima don’t want to do any movie about MGS and Konami
knows that it is a waste of money for them. So, now they will mass produce movies, game and on the end, they will destroy MGS Legacy created by Kojima just for the money. This is what big game developers do.

  • WrongDirectionZ

To be honest, i don´t realy want a two hours metal gear movie. There´s so much lore in every single mg title what i think is great, but how much of this epic storys, characters and even the damn kojima fiddeling (wich i love) can sony transfer and pack in this short ammount of time?? I´am very critic about this…. but still curious. Maybe they´ll surprise us with great cinema….

anyway… Salute to all of the mgi community and to nyx, who is doing a outstanding job for us mg geeks^^
I am watching this side since 2 years and was just to lazy to comment… until now. This is good, isn´t it?

    • Josh Houchin

I agree, two hours just isn’t enough time to do justice to all of the characters, ideas, and action that should be in an MGS story. I don’t know anything about this new writer, but I have some faith in director Jordan Vogt-Roberts, and I’m still not optimistic about the movie. I’d rather see a series on HBO where each game is a 10-episode season (kinda like the way they’ve been adapting the Game of Thrones books).

      • WrongDirectionZ

yea, a series would be fun ^^ written by kojima… Starring: Walter white as BB and Jesse as Kaz unboxing there new lab on motherbase.

Take back everything that we´ve lost… Kaz, iám already a cook 😀

  • Will Hough

If Basu has played all of the Metal Gear games from the beginning then it has a chance of being faithful at least, but to be honest I’m with most people here with low hopes.

  • Cipher

    This is Horrible news

    :((((

    • Ventris

      You could cut their funding!!!!!
You are Cipher after all XD

      • Cipher watches all… except for this movie.

        • Cipher

Well Cipher’s Patriots were destroyed in 2014
          I’m Just a phantom

  • Javier

    With Milla Jovovich as Snake.
Seriously, Im worried about a movie of this saga.

    • ominonarepus

At least it will be a sexy Snake on the screen xDD

  • Edward Wokhands

Oh no. I’m never happy when a game gets a movie announcement. They’re usually terrible. Kojima had better be involved somewhere or it’ll be a mess.

  • Edward Wokhands

The timer on the right says 00:00:00:00:00 for me. MGS is OUT? :O

I honestly panicked when I saw it. Thought it might have been cancelled or delayed or something.

    • Gatsu

The timer works for me and using Mozilla :).

    • It’s not working properly for everyone, sorry about the heart attack. 😛

  • MichaelPayneV

How come a small part of Sony named “Crackle” with a Low Budget and a Web Release Only can do a better Video Game Movie then the actual SONY Pictures?

Seriously, why is Sony not taking this project Seriously, especially after Hideo and Metal Gear has got more popular in Hollywood thanks to the E3 2013 and 2014 Trailers, just why?

PS: Wish Crackle was making this Movie, Dead Rising Watchtower was Amazing.

  • Facepalm…
Well, at least is not Owe Boll, LMAO.

    April’s Fools? Praying, praying…

    • ominonarepus

Have you seen his “Postal” movie? is the funniest/sickest think I’ve ever seen!

The silencer cat or the massacre at the festival (slowmo kills…) … even himself appears talking shit about their haters xDD

But is the only one, the other more “serious” movies he try to make are shit. He fool me, and make go to the cinema to watch “Alone in the dark”… omg…

    • Gatsu

House of the Dead, best movie EVER!…. <.< or not.

I agree we're at least lucky that it ain't directed by Boll lol.

  • Alberto Sánchez

    So, epic shit in coming.

  • Chico Ribeiro

Shitty writer, crappy director, terrible producer, no Kojima involvement (problably). The hype´s up!

    • MichaelPayneV

Actually the Good thing about this Movie that gives me hope is Jordan Vogt-Roberts.

  • Cesare Di Maio

Konami took down Metal Gear Solid Philantrophy PArt 2, for this? cough* japanese EA cough*

  • Ventris

I was so glad that Kojima is using game industry for telling his story to the world instead of writing a book, because i knew that we would already have a very bad movie from such good piece of history… And now it’s all gone, because this movie WILL BE BAD, with very POOR acting.
I don’t care how good script is because i don’t look movie script but whole MOVIE.

We already have great Metal Gear movies when we combine cut scenes from games 🙂

  • Zlatan

    Who?

    • MichaelPayneV

Star Lord man, “The Legendary Outlaw”?

  • ominonarepus

They should take David Hayter at least as adviser. He’s more in to comic world (writer of X-Men 1 and 2 and Watchmen) but also he’s been a “Snake” for quite some time…I think he could deliver us a faithful script.

  • Javier
  • ominonarepus

I leave this RMBR over here again… 🙂 (since I play MGS3 for the first time, I’ve seen Eric Bana as a good Snake)

  • Revovler_Lee

    Jay who?

  • Gatsu

Okey Nyxus, is this some early April Fool’s joke :D? You got me HAhhahh…haaa, it’s not a joke >:O !? What the hell.

Never heard of this dude before. But I guess there is always a 0.1% chance that a video game adaption could turn out to be a good movie. A really good one still hasn’t arrived imo. Still…I’m afraid, especially now that it turns out to be another disaster and wouldn’t really want that to happen with a movie about my favorite saga.

MGS movie makers, please don’t f*ck it up :C … And DON’T add some random boring characters who don’t have anything to do with MGS. For example how they do it in most other movies, yes I’m looking at you Resident Evil movies and Milla Jovovich’s annoying Alice. This is one of the reasons why game movies always fail, they don’t stick with the content of the games, so I hope they know their stuff.
Well at least Uwe Boll ain’t directing it lol, seen enough of his horrible movies :P.

Also another problem is how much content can the movie have. The games are stuffed with story details etc. Like how LOTR movies had to cut a lot of stuff from the book, to fit into the 3h time.

Next news we gonna get is the list of the actors:
Rookie actors as Solid and Liquid.
Some japanese dude as Cyborg Ninja, doing backflips and them ninja-moves.

And for the last epic actor…
    Chuck Norris as Revolver Ocelot.

    • MrVux007

i read this 4 times already today…..and even tho i know movie will likely suck,im still confused by their choice….. .http://www.diabetesqld.org.au/media/355814/2.gif

      • Gatsu

I’m scared to find out which actors will be in the movie ;(…
P.S. that gif is exactly how I reacted lol ;).

  • Why didn’t they hire David Hayter? It would make perfect sense. Not only is he a screenwriter, but he knows the story and characters inside out and he respects it.

    • Gatsu

Indeed, it would be a perfect choice 🙁 ! I wonder if they even considered it or asked David if he wanna do it.
I guess David would do it though :/, I mean it’s MGS.

      • Yeah, he probably would have been interested in the project, given how much he cares about the story and the character of Snake in particular.

    • Mini gear

Konami problem banned him from everything metal gear related

      • Why would they do that?

        • Mini gear

No idea, but hayter seems so distant from mgs related things, like how konami cancelled mg1 remake he was gonna be in I heard about. But yeah hayter would be great in this movie

          • They cancelled the remake because it was copyright infringement, that’s not uncommon. Nintendo does the same thing with fan projects all the time.

          • Chris Jackson

It wasn’t copyright infringement. The game was approved by Konami for a while, when suddenly they told them to cancel it.

          • Yes, probably because it began to look too much like an official project, especially with David Hayter and Paul Eiding on board.

          • Shalashaska

Cant agree more. They Probably cancelled it because it was getting big. They saw that opportunity and went like … “Hmm.. after Kojima leaving, this can be our next game” .. They wont let fans and other people earn money through their franchise… I was surprised they allowed it in the first place..
and as how things are going, their Next MG game cant be MGS 6.. they know no one will like that because of Kojima not being involved.. so their best bet is a remake. Greed is really horrible thing 😛

          • Mr.Pony

I’m guessing that we will soon see all MGS on PC so they can squeze a few more bucks from the franchise, after that a remake as you said, still wondering how they are going to pull a MGS6 maybe they’ll do a Rising 2 first

          • Shalashaska

They are gonna milk the series dry. Im just gonna hope it wont turn into another Acreed series. Something with great potential but always rushed out without any improvements just for the cash. And anyone who has played PES2015 will know that even konami pushes out incomplete games for the cash.

Yes rising 2 may come first. They are just gonna slowly get people to like them again with good games then BOOM, MGSeries without kojima.
            and then THIS.
            http://stream1.gifsoup.com/view6/2326692/milk-em-dry-o.gif
btw if you haven’t seen this movie.. do yourself a favor and watch it. its called Kung Pow

          • Mr.Pony

Won’t be long before we are playing “Metal Gear Chico” or “Metal Gear Solid: Sunny’s quest for the missing egg recipe”

Metal Gear CHICO : tactical betray action

          • César H. Sandoval

Remember that Konami first said the welcomed the remake as long as it was free, and even invited the guys making it into a tour around the studio?

          • It was probably a different department of Konami that decided to shut down the project, according to the guys who were working on it they couldn’t agree on a decision.

            http://www.metalgearinformer.com/?p=15510

          • PrinceHeir

            Correct.

They just took down Super Mario 64 HD Fan project just now.

            http://www.allgamesbeta.com/2015/03/nintendo-issues-takedown-notice-for.html

This is nothing new. Don’t know why people acting like Konami are the only ones doing it(i remember Square Enix took down a Korean Music video because it featured the chapel in Advent Children Movie)

    • Shalashaska

Exactly what i was thinking.. I mean.. He WROTE THE DAMN XMEN MOVIES! and He voiced snakes for years, and he was beside Kojima through all of it. If there’s anyone i would trust this movie with, It would be David Hayter. He would surely be the perfect choice.

      • MichaelPayneV

And the Masterpiece that is Watchmen.

    • Fernando Benítez

When the movie was first announced, Hayter presented a sript, but it was rejected. Something is happening between Hayter and Kojima/Konami. Something we don’t (and perhaps will never) know.

      • But how do you know something has happened? From the way Hayter talks about it in interviews, that doesn’t seem the case. He also said several times he certainly would be willing to take on the job again is Konami asked them for another Metal Gear.

    • César H. Sandoval

Hayter actually wrote a draft for this, he said so in an interview.

But that was way before Avi Arad joined the project, brought Sutherland into MGS, and Konami fired both Hayter and (supposedly) Kojima Productions.

So, take that as you will. The guy did try.

      • They didn’t really fire Hayter, he wasn’t a Konami employee or anything, they just chose another actor for this new project (not only for Snake but also for Ocelot).

        • César H. Sandoval

While keeping Otsuka, the japanese one, as always.

I know, it’s beating a dead horse, but my point is: there was 0 chance of Hayter ever scripting this movie, even more so after Konami kicked him out of the games themselves.

          • Shalashaska

Speaking of Hayter. If i EVER come to know Konami is the reason we dont have hayterr… ohh.. ohh.. i will…

            http://replygif.net/i/513.gif

          • Otsuka is just the dub, it’s not related to their choice to go with Kiefer.

  • Schmojima

I may not be a movie buff, but I really think – just from my point of view – that those guys, all of them, are not in any way the least bit appropriate for a movie this big or of this kind…

Man, I’m really sorry to say this, but I would be really surprised if this MGS movie does not turn out to be awful…

  • Maik O’Bannon

    Congratulations to Jay!
Let’s hope he’s a MGS fan like us,
let’s hope he’s gonna respect the themes and the style of the game we all love.
I wish the movie won’t be a live-action remake of the games,i hope it will tell a brand new story in MGS universe, like Solid Snake’s youth,or something like that.

    • MichaelPayneV

Or the very first 2 MG Games before MG:S

  • Icycool

well good luck Sony and Konami. Two news came out today. http://maddy06.blogspot.com/2008/03/stars-can-wait-jay-basu.html. Read the last two paragraphs and pray this doesn’t come to fruition. Other good news non related to MGS is http://blog.us.playstation.com/2015/03/31/announcing-the-limited-edition-batman-arkham-knight-ps4-bundle/

Hey, Nyxus, Kojimas name has been removed from the Silent hills page as well

    • kirtanloorii

      Everything’s a lie.

  • kirtanloorii

I really hope that this is an early april fools joke.

  • cool! i don’t know any of those movies, it already sounds like crap -.-

with my tremendous love for cinema it would really hurt to know there’s a bad movie about Metal Gear, even more when the source material is so close to films. i mean the only problem i would see is how to fit a story in two hours, but everything else is already there, all of the games are already amazing movies if you take out the gameplay.

It would probably be more important the direction rather than the script
