Rumor: Konami closing Los Angeles studio

Rumors have surfaced saying Konami is closing their Los Angeles based studio. Several developers have claimed on Twitter the studio is being shut down, with 3D Realms co-founder George Broussard mentioning it will happen just before Christmas. Sources close to website Eurogamer have also confirmed the closing of the studio.

Founded in 2013 as Kojima Productions LA, the US branch of the Japanese studio was assisting on the development of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, and largely responsible for the new Metal Gear Online.

In March of this year it was renamed Konami Los Angeles as part of the company’s restructuring that also was the reason for the disbanding of Kojima Productions in Tokyo.

According to Eurogamer’s sources, work on MGO was transferred to the Japanese studio shortly after the release of TPP, after which the remaining staff in LA were providing support and brainstorming new ideas.

Konami hasn’t commented on the rumor.

    Bye bye MGO3?

  • Knowing Konami’s strategy, they will probably act like nothing is going on.

And they stated they will continue MG series… How can we trust them now ?

let’s hope it won’t be another pachinko machine idea….or even worse…a mobile game….

Turns out that “stupidity” is finally the ultimate weapon to surpass Metal Gear.

I’ve been predicting that they’ll make a Clash of Clans ripoff with Mother Bases, I wonder if I’ll be right.

Oh dear, What will happen to MGO PC?

Don’t worry, if they squeeze it, it would be the most hallucinating hallucination we would ever had…

  • This in a way good news for MGO, if its true then now MGO will be handled by the right people.

They are totally panicked and not even an once coordinated… Why did they re-brand the buildings fom KP to Konami if it is for closing it only a year after !? What a professionalism demonstration !

And the award for most hated company of 2015 goes to…*drum roll*…KONAMI

    • MrVux007

Nah,Activision and EA still have the crown….but boy oh boy,KONAMI is so close to top out those two

      • Mr.Pony

Konami beats EA, Activision and Ubisoft for this year with all the stuff they are pulling. They fired them a month before christmas, we all know only evil corporation do that.

        • MrVux007

gave me a laugh at the “evil” corporation part…there is no “good” corporation, even the most praised Bethesda has a lot of skeletons in their closet as far as their marketing tactics goes…

in the end its all about making money cuz in their eyes gaming is business(which is the whole point, how they became such big companies btw)…

          • Mr.Pony

yeah that horse-armor stills haunts Bethesda, that’s why they put out good games, they feel guilty to have introduced the DLC system xD.

As for Konami, it’s just the lack of human sensibility, they could have maintained the studio until the release of MGO on PC, (they sure could use the staff) and then dissolve after that. This way it looks they just don’t want to spare the money to pay for the christmas bonus (if they have any) in yet another demonstration of how shitty Konami is towards the employees.

I’m really glad MGO turned into the hands of the japanese studio.. we don’t want a cod/battlefield mgo.. and that’s exactly what the LA studio was making.

    • Yeah, screw everyones Livelihood lets fix MGO.

    • Snake

      Agreed.

A good coder will never be that disrespectful toward another one even the the program was full of shit. This MGO iteration is not. I barely tested it and the gameplay look & feel is 1:1 matching solo mod. Can you imagine the quantity of work involved to adapt to online a gameplay concept that does not exist ?

  • Full Options

I can not tell what disgust me more… The team being destroyed like that or Konami even receiving all the MG communities representatives in their walls during the promotional phase with this dark plan carefully hidden behind.

Poor fellows… WE ARE WITH YOU GUYS !

  • Gatsu
  • Ishmael

haven’t played MGO for almost 3 weeks now. I’m sorry but it’s kinda… boring. I saw this coming, but not that fast.

    • Aleezy

Didn’t think it would be shut down honestly but not surprised. I ascended and just stopped to play single player and FOB….

      • FoxTamerMGO

It’s not as addictive as MGO2.. i still play the hacked MGO2 ;’D

        • Aleezy

mgo2 revived is just not the same.. still better than mgo3 lol.

          • FoxTamerMGO

  • Jav

    We are with you people.

  • PrinceHeir

    Lol Konami

  • well. so that’s the end of the support for MGO 3 right? even if is taken by the people at Japan i predict it will be a bit of a mess… i do hope i’m wrong.

I don’t like this studio: thay have ruined Metal Gear Online. They have what they deserve.

    • Full Options

Well, if you realistically figure out what happened now, you may understand that what you had so far was a miracle. Who ruined Metal Gear since January-march ??

    • RevolverRoden

      • Snake

I didn’t insult you, guy. Please, don’t be so rude.

        • Riku Ruohomäki

It wasn’t an insult. He was just stating what was obvious.

          • Snake

            I don’t think so xD.

        • RevolverRoden

If you make your job in a poorly way, you get fire. Easy to understand.

          • Gatsu

That’s not why LA got closed…

Just because you don’t like MGO3 doesnt mean they fucked up.

          • Snake

I’m not the only one who thinks they have fucked up. The game is not MGO. Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence MGO was even better.

          • RevolverRoden

And if you say something stupid, you get called dumb. Easy to understand.

          • Snake

            Ad hominem?

          • RevolverRoden

            Yes

  • cklambo

Give it back, its not right, we built it damnit

  • Ralexion

Just remembered MGO3 is not even on PC yet.

    My god.

  • remember when Konami Released a social based smartphone game? it turned out so great that they killed it 6 months after release, it had everything you hate about mobile games… lots of Quick time event endless tapping gameplay (but no TAPPY theme) that you really can’t control is just by “chance” (pay for better chances) literally asked you about every 10 minutes to buy some cards or something… you have to stay logged online all the time… it had nice graphics for a stripped down peace walker port of 6 levels from mpw and 2 from mgs3… I really hated it

SERIOUSLY BURN IN HELL SOCIAL OPS!!!!.. I prefer to play MGAcid on a broken emulator on a old xperiaplay…
