Metal Gear Survive gets first look at single player, beta coming January 18

Konami has released a video detailing the single player campaign and story of Metal Gear Survive, complete with developer commentary by the game’s producer, Yuji Korekado.

In Metal Gear Survive, you’ll play as a soldier fighting on Mother Base during the XOF attack in Ground Zeroes. A wormhole suddenly appears and begins absorbing people and objects, but this soldier manages to avoid being sucked in. Six months later, the player is sent by a ‘mysterious organization’ through the worm hole to an alternate world. He discovers a base camp near a wrecked Mother Base (strangely enough this is the Mother Base from Diamond Dogs). From there on the story will progress as you clear missions and find your way through the poisonous mist. You can take on side missions as well.

A beta will also be available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One from January 18th to 21st.

METAL GEAR SURVIVE BETA Jan. 18-21st, 2018. The beta will include 3 missions across 2 maps in CO-OP mode & up to four players.

Participation Bonus items for players who make a character during the BETA!

• FOX HOUND Name Plate
• Accessory Metal Gear REX Head
• Accessory Bandana

Metal Gear Survive will release in February of next year for PS4, Xbox One and Steam.

Lacks any sense of personality. It appears to be a competent game, don’t get me wrong, but I’m not into Zombie-Shooters or multiplayer games. Not that I’m above games with great gameplay and poor stories, such as the recent Tomb Raider games, but this just looks so bland to me.

        • Mr.Sixes

They’ve not shown anything of the story beside out of context wordless bits of the lead looking lost

  • Mr.Pony

I just want them to add the bow to TPP…just do that…

    • Nekkedsnake

I thought this same EXact thing when TPP came out! I was in the throws of playing Tomb Raider reboot and was having so much fun using the crafted (see what I did there?) bow that Lara gets to make and stealth thru missions. I even thought back to when Crysis 3 incorporated a bow and arrow mechanic. I thought, how come Snake has never used a bow and arrow before in any MGS game? It’s one of the deadliest weapons any agent can use on a stealth-based environment. I was wondering this while replaying MGS3 for the 100 time some time ago. Now there’s a bow in a spin-off of the last official MGS game.

    • Lex Radu

      I’ll be Oliver Queen.

      • Mr.Pony

you mean Rambo, running chest naked with a Bandana on the plains of Afghanistan xD

        • Lex Radu

No, Arrow, using Normal Arrows and saying “You have failed this Reality!” then shoot.

  • SolidusSnek

I’m very curious about the scenario with this mysterious organisation and the quote “”peoples from different place and times””

    • Mr.Sixes

Regarding the latter: Mean we can see things from ALL TIME PERIODS!

    • Lex Radu

      *cough cough Bridges cough cough*

  • Mr.Sixes

I’m now more in on this, than before. Thanks Korekado-san

Okay back, it was… Meh, didn’t expect Kylo to do that and Leia’s use of that other thing and I totally didn’t expect Luke’s final declaration and Rey’s parents to be who they were. But yeah over all I’m more interested in this then I was when Rose’s sister was in the bomber. Survive over Death

    • Mr.Sixes

Mind you everything I just said is actually really apart of the film just I’m being vauge..However will be buying this day 1

  • Did anyone notice they changed the appearance of the protagonist? He now has a beard.

    • Jav

I think the protagonist will be created by the player.

    • Full Options

Yes.Not sure if Yuji promoting is a good sign or not. Will check the solo-campain..

    • Mr.Sixes

Yep because protagonist is create a character

    • He reminds me of Jordan 🙂

    • NegaScott128

Eh, it’s a create-a-character anyway. Modifying the default appearance isn’t a big deal.

  • Nekkedsnake

I’ve said this time and time again and I’ll say it yet again…Co-op mode should have been implemented in TPP from day one. I know others have said this too. I mean, how dope would it have been to have done the TPP main missions with a buddy or two? Exactly like PW. I have confidence that if the kocknami debacle hadn’t happened the way it did, we would have at least seen co-op in some form

It’s an unfortunate circumstance that there was so much left out of the game. Now here’s Survival Horror Solid.

So there is also Omega … Not sure what they could improve in terms of gameplay…
Will check those new missions for sure.. I am surprised how Yuji suddenly communicate..

  • Lex Radu

Not gonna lie, this looks good.

Also the Fog, that requires you to use a mask on?

    “Shut up, don’t even breathe!”

  • Lex Radu

I just realized that we, the moding community might have influenced Kojima’s work.
The Death feature in DS looks like is based on the “Out of Body Experience Mod” for MGSV.
    https://youtu.be/yMha13rHS9g

    We did it, guys!

  • Lex Radu

The “Funhouse” guys came with an interesting theory, that the 4 soldiers with Mads, are not actually dead, but are covered in that black liquid and have those skull life masks, to camouflage themselves from the Invisible creatures, like Rick and the crew have done in The Walking Dead, covering themselves with blood and guts from a walker to blend in.

So what is this is the Camouflage Mechanic, that will help you blend in as log as is not raining?

    https://youtu.be/runAWvL2Bjg

  • Lex Radu

Also, now given the new information about “Timefall” it gives meaning to the Upside Down Rainbow from the second Trailer.

The Second Trailer starts right after a Timefall Ended, so Del Toro might be Sam who got older (and fatter)

  • All I can say is that I miss Sean Eyestone commentary.
Also, that female character model is actually a Quiet character model that was reworked for the game. Now she is a nurse 😉

  • ObsessedGeorge

Metal Gear… Has changed… It’s no longer about epic strorylines. Just an endless base defence battle with crafting in co-op… Metal Gear… Has died…

    • Mr.Sixes

How are you sure about the epic story line part?

      • ObsessedGeorge

Wormholes being canon? Nah, that’s too much, even for Kojima. 🙂

        • AeroGre

I mean its been mentioned several times in the past as well as in this new footage that this games story has nothing to do with the main canon.

  • Kol Leqejza

i thought co-op mode were the same as the singleplayer mode. i’m confused.

    • Lex Radu

Well, looks like they’re not, and i’m Glad.

      • Kol Leqejza

        care to explain?

        • Lex Radu

Simple, The Story is Single Player, while the Coop Mode…is just a Mode in which you can play some of the missions from the Campaign.

    • Full Options

I am not sure they ever stated this, but I would have been very surprised if so.
Solo players are a huge target, specially with Metal Gear. People here and there were kind of raising such hypotheses, but 0.0 mainstream info of such.
Multi-player / co-op is awesome but can only be a complementary feature, rather than a central one (at least for me), because the gaming experiences are not the same. They are not in the same product category at all. If they want to make a couple of bucks with this spin-off, it would have been like shooting an ICBM in their feet to restrict the concept, specially with their so mature engine..
That does not specially hint at a great solo campaign neither, but why not ?
I hope so. We will have all the answers soon anyways. ;D

      • Kol Leqejza

uhm, but PW was co-op. and u could always decide if u wanna play single- or multiplayer. u always had the option. but i don’t get the difference in survive. why is it distinct from eachother?

        • Full Options

We don’t have enough details yet. They can technically do any miracle as far as they stay focused on our expectations..
Whether they miss the opportunity or not AND, beside the 2 years backlash they experienced.. Then we will turn any page, but they have to catch that their “beloved” engine was matured to satisfy any gamer (them, and us).

          • Kol Leqejza

i hope it will be like PW’s system. and free-roaming in co-op would be noce, too.

          • Full Options

We are in the situation where Korekado is all but an artist… But he is the FoxEngine, heavily involved in its architecture and maturation since always.. I think he is really motivated, yet to come and speak to us.. This is not his style at all (no single tweet since the real clash..). But the last thing we want is to witness any kind of duel between him and Boss.
We all know his infinite value and that he is part of Metal Gear’s very heart. I hope the launch will confirm that but in all cases, we will have the full picture soon..

      • Lex Radu

It looks like the Focus will be Single Player, which i’m shocked to see being done.
I was expecting a quote on quote “Campaign” with missions a few dialogue for context, but i wasn’t expecting a fully Voice Acted Campaign with actual Cutscenes, that looks pretty thought out, like the guy who directed them does have a vision.

They don’t look like Kojima, but they look pretty good (no pun intended) they have actual Cinematography to them.

At first i was skeptical, but now i’m intrigued, i might buy it is the Campaign is good.

        • Full Options

I will buy it anyways. I feel like just owing this possible last shot
to Konami, despite all this mess.. I don’t want to chase the witches but can’t accept such disloyalty.. If they did a good job given the atmosphere, I am sure Kojima can be the first to underline the effort, as far as Survive is .. say cool … I hope they won’t f.ck all up..

          • Lex Radu

Glad to see someone even considering buying this, a nice change of pace.
We should give Konami a second chance, we don’t know what’s the real reason Kojima left, and we will never, and should never know.

          • AeroGre

Yea I mean Konami has made it clear many times that this is just a spin off and will in the future work on a main MG game. So I say we save our harshness for when they start revealing what they have planned for the main canon.

If you weren’t convinced why is Kojima being compared to Tarantino..
    I love stuff like this!

    • Tom Brearley-Smith

Wait, I thought Hellboy was directed by Guillermo del Toro, not Quentin Tarantino.

      • Lex Radu

Tarantino “Steals” shots as Homage to other Movies.
This shot is a homage to Del Toro’s “Hellboy”

That’s what I meant, that Hideo has the same love for Cinema as Quentin.

        • NegaScott128

I mean, it’s not like that’s something only Tarantino does. He’s not even the first guy to do it consistently. Brian De Palma made a whole career out of referencing Hitchcock.

          • HoxtoniteIsLoveHoxtoniteIsLife

Brian de Palma has a hand fetish and Tarantino well no comments.on that one . Tarantino uses eclectic soundtracks while DePalma sticks to a certain tone . One is funky and relies.on amazing.dialogue and explosition, the other is more suspenseful and cinematography . So Im.surprised.someone managed.to find a comparison out of them

          • Lex Radu

Yes, But Tarantino and Kojima are doing it constantly.

          • Lex Radu

You get my point. Both are known for doing this. I mean Kill Bill is a love Letter to Japanese Classics, and Snake Eater a Love Letter to Classinc 007. Need i say more for you to not disagree just for the sake of disagreeing?

  • Maynard

“Do you think love can bloom even on a battlefield?” – Otacon
“That sounds like a Tommy quote” – James Franco

The most backhanded compliment Kojima has ever received.

  • SholidOnline

If it ain’t Kojima, it ain’t Metal Gear. Just have to say that. Even the side games (Ac!d, Ghost Babel) had Kojima around at the time.

    • Lex Radu

      I disagree with this mentality.

      • radun

you really can’t have a Rembrandt without…you know, Rembrandt. But of course, a stealth action series from Konami by the name of Metal Gear could very well continue for better or worse.

        • Lex Radu

No. Metal Gear is not about Stealth, the game is not about is Gameplay, but about the hidden side of the Governement that we don’t know and see, abut the conspiracies surounding them, and this case, looks like Survive will be about the Paranormal side of things, like Alternate dimesnions and its creatures.

And no, the name doesn’t imply Stealth, but a fight with a Huge Mech, a huge Metal Gear in the third act.

          • Mr.Sixes

            And it has stealth

          • Lex Radu

It has, but is not about it. For what we know, SuVive might have Stealth.

          • Mr.Sixes

  • Mini gear

Ah so that’s the story, wonder how it’ll turn out in the end

    • Lex Radu

OK, i realized that it was “CDT’ not “GDT”…that being said, CDT refers to a Mental Disorder test, yhr “The Clock Drawing Test….seen in Hanibal, which starred Mads as Hannibal.
And the second meaning is related to Game Development, more specifically Removing/Fixing Bugs (Corpse Disposal Team)

  • Lex Radu

Hell yeah, glad that this is happening before SuVive and DS. Hopefully by the time SurVive and DS releases, Sony and Konami will be against Loot Boxes, and none would be forced to implement them, especially DS!

    https://youtu.be/jkD6VDrkfP8

    • NegaScott128

I don’t think DS is really in danger of getting loot boxes. Considering how much creative control they’re giving Kojima, and how supportive they’ve been regarding single-player games like Horizon, The Last of Us, and Uncharted, it would be very strange if they forced loot boxes into DS.

      • Lex Radu

Sony did say before EA released BF2 that they we’re excited to as they said “find exciting ways to blalal” long story short, excited to implement more Microtrasactions than ever before, that what they had so far was just the start, so they could have planed to influence the games coming in the next 1 to 5 years, like DS.

Thankfully EA fucked it up at the best moment, greedy and stupid enough to alert the freaking Goverenment, bringing attention to loot boxes.

        • Lex Radu

So that by the time even SurVive will release, saying “We have no loot boxes” become good marketing, a thing Konami would be stupid not to do, given their current PR situation.

If Konami wants to redeem themselves, all thhey have to say (as a first step) is confirm that surVive will have no loot Boxes.

          • It LITERALLY does have lootboxes. Konami wins again.

          • Lex Radu

            …Crap.

          • literally. https://youtu.be/E_uJ1yJ7Nls?t=203
            haha trolling the industry

          • Lex Radu

Doesn’t loot horrible, as long as you get items depending on how well you played.

          • Mr.Sixes

Not really loot boxes, as those are the rewards that drop at the end of the match and there’s seemingly no way to buy them

          • I’m just saying they are taking the piss out of lootboxes 🙂

        • NegaScott128

Even if the government decides not to get involved, the sheer backlash against EA and the low sales of Battlefront II would likely lead Sony and any other company seeking to put loot boxes in single-player games to not include them.

          • Lex Radu

Bingo, that’s what i’m saying, that EA did a great thing by doing a horrible thing.

Thanks my friend, and keep brainstorming on cool theories like you usually do. Before being very inspiring material, it also opens wide sets of new combinations / directions. Very healthy exercises, attitude. ;D

          • Lex Radu

Oh, but i am, theorizing also helps me with my writing, with my script, the story i’m working on, but addapting the themes i think DS will be about, since most Kojima Theries turn out to be Fake, by conclusion my product will be an Original one, of course inspired by the awesome mind that is Hideo Kojima.

I try my best not to rip off Kojima, while using what i learned from hm, he is trully a teacher, not just in the products he puts, but in the marketing as well, specifically in how to make a Trailer.

          • Full Options

Kojima essentially always stays heavily human in his feelings if compared to intensively oriented production dudes. His production skills are top-notch, but the production process feels not that central for him if compared with his attachment for truly human sensations. Probably why he is also keen to play with stuff such as 4th wall, etc..
Kojima himself ripped off many things without hiding them. I think you can rip as many things as you want as far as those ideas serve efficiently your story instead of just ripping them off.
Like it is ok if you plug those as some pivotal eye-winks, instead of simply paste them here and there..
From oldest artists to more contemporary ones, we are always inspired by them in the way to describe our feelings.
You may sometimes use those ideas for just showing and reminding everybody how great they are, without being considered a ripper at all. ;D

          • Lex Radu

Yeah, i couldn’t have said it better myself, steal elements and technique if it helps your story, and be sure to make it clear when using it, that it’s not your creation, but a tool created by someone else.

That’s how the industry evolves, improving on what others did before, while paying homage to The Legends, that’s what i plan on doing with my Movie, Give my own message, tell what i want to tell, while showing my gratitude and respect for people like Hideo Kojima, Zack Snyder, and the Music Group BUG Mafia, that made my childhood.

In fact, 1 of the subplots is more of an adaptation of one of their songs, and i sure hope i’ll manage to get the rights to use the song as well.

          • Full Options

Yeah, just like legos, it is ok combine those pieces to craft bigger ideas, regardless of who individually created them.
Some elements and other techniques may help you in better dressing your project like the way you would use spices in a given meal.

For the sound-track, it is always delicate since you need an authorization if the song is something like younger than 50 years so outside of the public domain.
You can always suggest some ideas such as any text from lyrics for example but for music, you need exact melodies which are protected. You may humbly ask for free authorization depending who you have in front, or at least buy the rights..

But even without the song you can for sure always find a perfect and perhaps even better replacement / solution as well.
            Happy writing !

          • Lex Radu

Yeah, there is always an alternative, because if you can’t find a replacement, if you can’t make a compromise, then you are not a real artist, and i wanna be one.

Most of the Music, Songs, are more important for the Promotional side of it, for the Trailers, i mean, one other thing i learned from Kojima, is that is better to get involved personally as a Director in the Trailers.

Yes, there are people at the studios paid to do that stuff, to promote it, people who have done it for years, but no one knows better to tease and get interest in your product than you, the creator.

          • Full Options

Yeah, there is always an alternative, because if you can’t find a replacement, if you can’t make a compromise, then you are not a real artist, and i wanna be one.

Now my turn to say I could not have said it better.
I’d add that once you have the habit to create, then you feel way more free to composite your ideas with other’s, specially because you become trained enough to come up with great alternatives. When we already know we’ll deal with any problem thanks to creative experience, we don’t even feel guilty anymore about simply getting any source of inspiration.

Consider the sound track like a genuine dimension of your story. Sound, despite appearances is as important as video. It must be dedicated to your story, without thinking at all about if it will facilitate the promotion or not.
Sound is the ultimate weapon to make truly original creations.

It is Sergio Leone’s job to choose Morricone, nobody else.
            ;D

          • Lex Radu

Indeed, that’s why i listen to the song that i want in it over and over, to see what fits, and what doesn’t, and it also helps with the writing process as well, and once you can already tell what music fits and doesn’t you, that;’s when you know the tone of your Story.

          • Full Options

Also, more mid-ambient / mid-music sound effects to the rescue. Depending on the situation, just “atmospheric” minimalist notes or slightly more elaborated patterns can sometimes provide very handy, adapted and efficient transitions.

As a very generic example, for slower pans across more panoramic shots, simple low, long and smooth background basses with sometimes few shorter or more acute lines (e.g. simple strings and sporadic drums / kicks here and there..) can quickly and easily provide a robust base.

          • Lex Radu

            Thanks, that’s quite helpful.

          • Full Options

You are kind Lex, but I did nothing.
Writing few sound sequences yourself can appear first too esoteric, but I just wanted to underline that on the other hand, it decrease efforts needed to synchronize them with your frames by a solid half, if compared with inserting ready made musics, hence also offering an extra and very flexible layer for transitions between your music tracks.

14 more days, then i will have 22 days leave then 4 more months of work after that.

We are currently-short handed, bcuz of inner politics of the company that i wish not discuss.

But as long as im getting payed, i wont complain too much.

Try not to get too fat during the holidays eh? 😉

          • Full Options

Ah I see… Yeah, if you get more work, at least you’ll save some more substantial assets for harder future parties… ;D

As for my paunch.. xD well I suppose you may find Pi somewhere in its metrics for some years now (quite round).. xD Maybe just the overall radius will slightly change after holidays, so it won’t be that noticeable (hopefully ;P)..

Good luck / best waters buddy

Probably 2019, because while SIE is pleased with the speed and have said this is faster then normal, most PS first party exclusives are a 4+ year process.

      • Gatsu

2019 is highly possible, but I still hope it comes sooner ;D.

    • I hope it is not 2018. Kojima is not a magician. You can’t create a complex open world game with 2 years of the development +/- studio build time.
I don’t want this game to feel rushed or not done. I want it to be complex, interesting and full of characters and interesting stories.

I know it sounds weird to say that he should release it in 2019, but I hope it will be that way. I want a masterpiece, not another game.

      • BurntFM

Was it ever confirmed that it is in fact an open world game? Or is it more of of an open world concept on a smaller scale. I think of Open World in the scale of MGSV

        • Yeah, Kojima confirmed about that even before the official announcement. This game will be smaller in scale than MGSV, but will have more details/depth in it. So basically, smth like inFamous:SS in terms of scale. big, but not that big if you compare to Witcher III/Skyrim/MGSV/GTAV/Ass Creed open worlds.

      • Full Options

I don’t think Kojima ever considered releasing DS in 2018.
Decima tools for sure demonstrated high enough results in quickly editing many things.. But even tho, likely at least 2019..
In all cases, later would really lay close to the end of PS4’s life-cycle and 2018 would give them the hell of few months left before packing first releases.

    • BurntFM

I hope that “announcement” is a P.layable T.easer of some sorts.

      • vic boss

I think it will be a few minutes of gameplay with an ending that will say 2019

To everyone who research and knows everything about Kojima, i need you to do something (if you want, and most certainly you will when i tell you why i need this information)

Can anyone good at digging find whether or not Kojima had a meeting (Coffee, Dinner, Photo) with Darren Aranofsky before or after he started to write “Mother”?

I have seen my fair share of Aranosfky Movie, they are all kinda weird, but Mother it’s a whole other beastm, it’s the weirdest and most -efd up film that he ever made, a Movie that he wrote in a few days and shot in 6 weeks, he never did a Movie like this, so something must have pushed him to make this quick, someone might have made him proove something, and i think that someone is Hideo Kojima.

Not only it doesn’t feel like his previous work, but i feels like a Hideo Kojima Story, in your face with the metaphors, no subtle metaphors like his previous work, but clear and at the same timwe confusing Metaphors, exactly like Kojima.

Also, i won’t say what themes, because i don’t wanna spoil it for who didn’t see it, but a lot of them fit in to what we saw and know about Death Stranding, in no way conected as a Universe, but connected theme wise, like Kojima and Aranofsky are exploring 2 side of the same Story, each trying to Surpass Each Other, while also staying on their side, Aranofsky concentrating on the past and present aspect of the main theme, while Kojima on it’s future, on the Reaction to Aranofsky’s “Cause”, the consequences to what we have done and are doing.

Now, that being said, those who don’t understand what i’m talking about, see the Movie, and you will know exactly what themes connect and form the Larger Theme, the othe that Connects the 2 on that aspect (not universe related) and more other stand alone Movies, TV Shows and Youtube Shorts.

I’ll give a hint, and if you saw it, you know what this image means for both of them.

PS: Please don’t spoil it for the people who haven’t seen it. Appreciate.

Kojima has written an article for Glixel talking about Star Wars: The Last Jedi and its place in the current media landscape.

“The Last Jedi may be the first attempt to free Star Wars from its era of mythology, and propel it into the present. The closing scene of the young boy hopefully gazing up at the stars is as fitting an indication of this intent as any.

In Star Wars, anyone can be the hero. That’s what The Last Jedi tells us. It’s a new era, starting in a kingdom without a king.”

    https://www.rollingstone.com/glixel/features/kojima-star-wars-in-the-era-of-disney-w514793

Also, Kojima really wants us to know that Big Boss isn’t Darth Vader.

“As a bit of an aside, it is sometimes hypothesized that perhaps due to Metal Gear Solid 3’s position as a prequel and its focus on the birth of Big Boss, it was influenced by Star Wars. Darth Vader = Big Boss, or something like that. This is wrong. I was actually referencing the structure of Planet of the Apes and Stephen Hunter’s Swagger Saga.”

    • NegaScott128

Also, if you wanna see a lot of Extremely Not Mad™ individuals, check out the comments.

Apparently, enjoying The Last Jedi is a war crime or something.

      • RJRO

Nobody hates more to star wars than fans of star wars.
(it can be applied with fans of any series)

      • Tom Brearley-Smith

This is how I would rate the three most recent Star Wars films:
        1. VIII – The Last Jedi
        2. VII – The Force Awakens
        3. Rogue One

      • Mr.Sixes

It is a rather crap movie.

    • MrVux000

I never seen Big Boss as Darth Vader to begin with, with exception of MG1 and MG2 where he was presented as just another cliche maniacal villain.

      • NegaScott128

I guess where people got the idea is that there’s a whole prequel trilogy (or quadrilogy/pentalogy, considering where you stand on Portable Ops and whether you consider Ground Zeroes a separate game or not) covering his origins and descent into villainy, much like with the Star Wars prequels.

    • Mr.Sixes

I don’t believe he’s correct on the first line regearding “freeing itself” especially as the final shot of the boy is reflective of it’s mythology of Anakin, Luke and Rey gazing at the sky in their first movies.

Luke was anyone, it was only in empire strikes back did we find out he was someone truly important and even then that only lent itself to redeem a man who he never knew . But he was no King, he had no title beside his name and even then that had been washed with blood. Hell Leia was a princess but she lot her kingdom and ends up becoming a rebel .

Overall: DA FUCK YOU TALKING ABOUT KOJIMA!?

I never viewed the birth of big boss as akin to Vader as it was clear unlike the fall of Anakin into Vader, John didn’t “Fall” he actually was given everything a soldier could ask for.

    I just realized something.

Who said Sam is a Man to begin with?

Looks like Kojima will attempt to tackle the “Gender” Subject on this one. Can’t wait to see his angle on the matter.

I might be reaching here, but we know Kevin Durand is involved in some way shape or Form.
I think he is playing Del Toro’s Model, if you look throughout the whole Second Trailer, you will nottice that Del Toro does have his look, his manerism.
