Some new Metal Gear Survive story details: Wardenclyffe Section, Goodluck and infectious lifeforms

A new fact sheet released by Konami has shed some more light on the story and characters of Metal Gear Survive. The soldier you play as in the game has managed to avoid getting sucked into the wormhole that opened up over Mother Base. Six months later he awakens in factlity belonging to Wardenclyffe Section, a secret US government facility. A man called Goodluck tells him he has been infected with a lifeform, and he now has to travel to the alternate dimension to find a cure for the infection.

According to the list of key features, there will be daily, weekly and special events as well, much like with MGSV.

Game Overview:

Konami Digital Entertainment breaks new ground with an original spin-off from METAL GEAR SOLID V titled METAL GEAR SURVIVE. This title introduces a fresh spirit of exploration, unique mechanics and strategic co-op gameplay.

Following Big Boss’ escape at the end of METAL GEAR SOLID: GROUND ZEROES, a solider on the collapsing Mother Base is nearly pulled into a wormhole that opens over the base. The soldier loses consciousness and awakes six months later in a facility belonging to Wardenclyffe Section, a secret research organization within the United States government. Players take the role of this soldier with a goal of rescuing those pulled into the wormhole half a year ago and to find a cure for a mysterious infection. “You don’t get to sit this one out. You’re already infected with that lifeform I was telling you about,” a man named Goodluck in Wardenclyffe Section instructs.

METAL GEAR SURVIVE is a survival action game in an alternative universe. In a struggle to survive and understand this hellish new environment, players engage in both single player and connected co-op. In the battle for survival scavenged materials must be wrought into usable items, gear and weapons if you are to have any hope of making it home.

Key Features:

  • Two modes of play – single player and co-op. Character experience, skills and items obtained are shared between the two modes.
  • Build and develop your Base Camp. This offers access to crafting weapons and gear, and serves as a command center for planning missions in both single player and co-op modes.
  • Gather resources, blueprints and raw materials for use in crafting. These can be gathered in single player mode by exploring the environment or won in successful co-op missions.
  • Develop Base Camp with new facilities to aid survival, including crop growing, animal rearing, and food and water storage. As your camp develops you’ll gain access to high grade crafting items.
  • Manage resources, including essentials such as food and water, as well as raw materials used for weapons, defences and expendables.
  • Complete daily, weekly and special event Orders for rewarding materials and blueprints to be used in single player and co-op.

“Goodluck” is a really stupid name, but at least it’s better than Hot Coldman.

I really don’t understand the logic behind introducing yet another secret intelligence agency when we already have (in this time frame alone) XOF, Cipher, and Foxhound. It would’ve made a lot more sense to just have this be one of those other groups and score easy fanservice points, not to mention avoiding some confusing questions (so does Wardenclyffe Section exist in the main MGS timeline? Did it somehow spring up out of nowhere in-between GZ and Survive and only in this timeline?). Then again, I can see them pulling a twist that “Wardenclyffe Section” is actually Cipher or something, but it’s still a weird decision.

    • It’s not going to be canon anyway, so they don’t really have to worry about the overall timeline.

I mean, if you really can’t stand the itch – honestly, and also, since it’s a spin-off, you can just make it up … I mean, it’s not the same as an official, legit answer, but can we truly expect an answer from Konami? Not only is it not necessary (at least, to them), but do Konami answers concerns like these – You know what I mean?

So, just make it up. That’s what I did with MGSV. I filled in the blanks for The Phantom Pain. I even made “V Snake” my own. Gave him some fanfiction that personally pleased me.

For example, here’s one, for Survive’s main protagonist, off the top of my head:
      -He’s V Snake’s younger, biological brother
-Looked up to his brother, admired him, and followed him into Militaires Sans Frontières
-V was MSF’s best soldier, his brother came in 2nd
-He was MSF’s best LRRP and usually did Recon before Big Boss (& V Snake, when co-op, or went along with them in 4-player coop) deployed for missions
-Ummm … even for V, the reason why he cares so much (more-so than anyone else) for MSF (or DD) is because of a lingering feeling, a bond he could not explain, something he couldn’t shake … that bind would be that he had a blood brother he looked out for ever since who had joined MSF with him…

IDK, this was all quick, all off the top of my head so you can get an idea and do with it what/e you please …

  • so for some reason you rescue a nurse that happens to be the same one that gets killed in the hallway when Big Boss awakens from his coma… I’m so confused.. … 90% chances of a crystalzombie metal gear zek… haha! of course is going to be a cheap reskin of shaquelantopos MG.. also from all the interdimensional stuff it appears you only get things developed by diamond dogs and cipher in 1984 but strange extra-dimensional weapons, creatures and environments are out of the question.. right? I mean something like this:..

  • I don’t know… It’s hard for me to get excited. What will happen after the release of SurVive? What if the game will flop? Will Konami pursue Metal Gear story-driven sequel?
What if this game will be a success? Will they make more of it?

Fox Engine is still relevant, but not for long. 2019-2020 is the end of the era for eighth console generation. New technologies are coming soon and you need to adapt for these changes or you will face very aggressive competition where Konami will not surVive as a console game maker.

We can always count on Platinum to make another Rising

      • That would be cool.

I can only hope that, regardless of whether Survive flops or succeeds, Konami still develops (or hires a competent developer to develop) a new story-based MGS. If they decide to stop really improving the Fox Engine, I guess they’ll just move to Unreal 4 like a lot of other Japanese developers. But I hope they do keep improving the engine, since it’s probably the best engine of this generation in terms of balancing graphical effects and smooth performance.

But, knowing Konami, they probably won’t keep working on Fox Engine, and they’ll farm out MGS to some no-name studio that’ll make a piece of crap that kills the series even more than Survive would.

      • They were hiring new staff for the next Metal Gear (assuming they didn’t mean Survive) a few years back, but they need a new visionary director to replace Kojima. Hopefully they won’t have unrealistic expectations for Survive’s sales because it doesn’t look like this will be a big hit, to put it mildly.

      • I hope they will keep working with it. It’s a great fit for PES
