Yoji Shinkawa created artwork for Call of Duty Zombies Chronicles

No, this isn’t Metal Gear artwork, nor is it concept art for Death Stranding. But if it look like it could be, that’s because it was drawn by Yoji Shinkawa, who’s done concept art for Metal Gear games since 1997 (and who’s now at the end Kojima Productions studio as we know). The artwork below is for Call of Duty Zombies Chronicles, the latest expansion to the hugely popular FPS Call of Duty: Black Ops III. Shinkawa made some character art as well as a dynamic PlayStation 4 theme for the title.

During a livestream earlier today studio head of Treyarch Jason Blundell explains that as a huge Metal Gear fan, it was great to have him create art for the game. “To be able to work with him and have him realize our main characters in his very unique and distinctive style was an opportunity I couldn’t really pass up.”

  • Does anyone find it ironic that the upcoming Metal Gear zombie game doesn’t have Shinkawa artwork, but this Call of Duty zombie expansion does?

Yeah, Indeed! More points to COD Zombies and less for MGSurvive. xD

It has potential to be a mind fuck experience, but i’m worried it will be none of that.

      • Probably best to not expect too much from the story. It doesn’t seem like that will be the focus of the game.

        • Yeah, but at the same time this looks like the return to Camp Omega Hideo described, so i’m hoping is that, an unfinished Hideo concept, you can see it in some little details, like how the light refracts, as if it’s under water, and how fishes are swimming on the sky, how the molotov they trown faded when it touched the ground, like it was indeed under water.

Such a shame Konami is basically selling the Zombie Mode for MGSV as it’s own Game, instead of giving it to people who own Ground Zeroes like we were promised.

I swear to God, Gabe Newell will be done with Half-Life 3 by the time Konami releases more information on Metal Gear SurviVe.

      • It has no potential to do that, objectively speaking. Sure, if they want to copy Kojima’s style, maybe they will try something but…

    • It feels more like a turd trown at konami. I just pre-order the expansion just for the theme, and I don’t event own the game. The game interface icon for mgsv S are ridiculous. I can’t take seriously the man siroute to display the equipment on body parts.

  • Shinkawa should do artwork for ALL the games. I really can’t wait to see something else related to Death Stranding. As far as I know this is the most important thing they’ve shown.

BTW, I recently had some fun mixing artwork from Shinkawa. I figured I could share it as well.

I always wonder why Shinkawa like to draw characters with the same grumpy facial expression?

  • I love it. It looks incredible. He is the best artist when it comes to military design.
they should have used this art for their main campaign for the next game not just zombies.

I want to see how Death Stranding characters will look like.

Can’t blame you for that. But I think despite wildlands sucking and for honor having bad servers ubisoft is reallyyy improving in my humble opinion. They are still greedy af but they are changing their strategy.I mean look at watch dogs 2 . That game was fucking great and had a graphics upgrade

          • I’m looking forward to the next Splinter Cell, Blacklist was quite good!

    • Yaaay, even more towers to climb… I’m going to be interested in it if they will revamp stealth, combat and traversal/exploration mechanics. Ubisoft’s gameplay systems are behind the competition in every major way.

      Reply
      • Maybe they will, they did take a break of a year for the first time since ACII, so perhaps they revamped the mechanics.

        • InternecivusRaptusStrikesBack

Trust me they did.Although I hope it doesn’t have a release like unity which also had little recycling

          Reply
        • Taking a break does not help anything. It helps them to make a better marketing campaign but to make a better game you need experienced developers and game designers that can work out the gameplay systems together.
We re talking about Ubisoft here who develops a game with multiple teams from France to USA, Canada, EU countries, China and etc.
Their games never had a solid vision with a few exceptions.

          Reply
          • That is indeed true and Ubisoft’s biggest problem. It’s an assembly line approach to game design, kind of the opposite of Kojima’s vision on creating games.

          • InternecivusRaptusStrikesBack

I would say this applies to Ea another PoS company as well

          • InternecivusRaptusStrikesBack

Well Ashraf Ismail (the lead designer of this and ac4) is probably the most passionate dev I’ve seen at ubisoft and he’s fucking great”.Same goes for the writer Darby McDevitt
            Amazing writer

      • InternecivusRaptusStrikesBack

Yeah. And don’t forget the hilarious AI and animations as well as boring sidequests. Complaining aside this is by the black flag team so I would be hyped for it but if andromeda showed gamers a lesson. It was that pre ordering is bullshit. CDPR have the best marketing even tho witcher got a bit downgraded but the gameplay was so immersive.

I hope there is no controllable eagle tho.

          • I would actually like that, much better than having the Batman Detective View.

          • InternecivusRaptusStrikesBack

You mean eagle vision.Well eagle vision does make sense canonically.Controlling an eagle is a reskin of watch dogs 2 and ghost recon drone + Far cry primal owl

          • Canonically, yes, but it makes the game too easy, a controlloble eagle would be a welcome change, you would have to manually tag enemies and object before infiltratic to assassinate your target.

      • Yeah, due to the all annualising thing, all the mechanics feel to recycled, at this point they either change how controls and mechanics work and feel or it will feel too familiar, which i don’t think is what people want from AC any more.

Almost forgot, i still have to play Rogue, is it any good?

          • if you like Black Flag, you will like Rogue, think of it as an expansion to Black Flag

          • InternecivusRaptusStrikesBack

The world is empty tho unfortunately
Unlike lively atmosphere of black flag

          • I liked Black flag because i was hooked in Edwards Story, Matt Ryan’s performance made that game.

Is Shay that good? (or how his name is)

          • Didn’t finish Rogue myself, but its a different approach, the idea that you character was once an assassin who was wronged and turned Templar is different and refreshing from anything else in the franchise.

          • InternecivusRaptusStrikesBack

Yeah.It has been improved by that point.I liked Arno but the story was not fleshed out enough. But it was good.Idk why it is called shit all these years after the patch

          • You might as well skip it honestly. It is as bland as it gets.

edit: Unity i mean, haven’t played Rogue.

          • InternecivusRaptusStrikesBack

It’s obvious you haven’t played it
Story was a bit bland but gameplay was different
Unlike retarded batman arkham grappling hooks

“where do zombies fit in with the politics????!”

          • DidSomebodySayFIB

Also, CoD Zombies is a side game to Call of Duty.

            Like Metal Gear Survive.

          • InternecivusRaptusStrikesBack

Survive is entirely about zombies and base defense and has no story.Atleast treyarch zombies have great fucking stories

        • I have seen only 1 post about it so far: “Is Yoji Shinkawa working with Treyarch” (prior to the confirmation).

  • This is one of many benefits when you are working indie. You can do these kind of things. If they were still in Konami, there was a great chance that this couldn’t happen.
As for the work itself: Damn that’s gorgeous. Shinkawa knows how to steal people’s hearts.
