The Metal Gear series has sold over 56.9 million copies

The Metal Gear series has sold more than 56.9 million copies as of the end of December 2020. The updated number was provided on Konami’s official website along with their latest financial report.

The previous number was 56.1 million copies by the end of June 2020, which means that the series sold an additional 800,000 units in the last half year. This is despite the series not having any new releases for quite a while (the last installment, spin-off Metal Gear Survive launched nearly three years ago in February of 2018). In September of last year, Konami released three Metal Gear titles for digital distribution platform GOG.

As for the rest of the financial results, Konami has posted record earnings mostly due to mobile games and the Switch title Momotaro Dentetsu: Showa Heisei Reiwa mo Teiban!, which has been very successful in Japan and has already sold over 2.5 million copies.
