Geoff Keighley interviews Kojima about Death Stranding

Hideo Kojima unveiled the first trailer for his new game Death Stranding during Sony’s E3 conference, and Geoff Keighley was able to conduct an interview shortly after for Youtube Live at E3.

Kojima-Death-Stranding-Interview-E3-2016

First of all, Keighley asked if Kojima did already pick a game engine after all. “No” Kojima answered. “We have a couple of candidates but we haven’t settled on a game engine yet.”

Norman Reedus will be starring in the game as a character whose name Kojima did not want to reveal yet. However for this game the studio is not collaborating with filmmaker Guillermo del Toro. Death Stranding is unrelated to PT. Also, Ludens, the company’s mascot, is not related to the game, Kojima said.

Death-Stranding-9

Keighley also asked him what type of game this is going to be. “I can’t answer that quite yet, but it will have a lot of action elements. I believe there’s a lot of players out there that are enjoying action games, and those players should be able to play it very naturally.” Kojima explained. “And after two, three hours, four hours of playing it, that they will get the feeling that it’s something completely different from what they’re used to, from what they’ve been playing so far.”

Death-Stranding-2

The world and setting we see in the trailer is very intriguing. Keighley asked Kojima where this game is set. Kojima chuckled and replied: “Still a secret.”

After that Keighley asked about what other characters aside from Norman’s character we can expect (we can see a baby, oily handprints and prints in the sand). “There are a lot of elements such as the ones just mentioned in this teaser.” Kojima said. “You know, I want for people to create their own ideas.”

Death-Stranding-8

What does the name Death Stranding mean? “So you call it ‘mass stranding’ when you have a lot of whales or dolphins stranded to the beach.” Kojima explained. “When they’re alive, it’s called a ‘life stranding’, and when they’re dead and they’re stranded they call it ‘death stranding’. So this means that something from some world comes and is stranded, that’s what it means.”

Death-Stranding-12

Keighley also asked if this was the game he has dreamed of making. “Not necessarily.” Kojima said. “When I established my new company towards the end of last year, I started to think of many ideas, and from there I started to pick some ideas that would be good to make, and from there I was just like: what would people want right now, what do I need to make at this point? And the idea that was selected was this idea of Death Stranding.”

So is it going to take a long time before we can play it? “Yeah, it probably will take some time.” Kojima replied.

  • We might as well change the website to “deathstrandinginformer” or “kojimainformer” cause admittedly most of us are more interested in what Kojima’s doing than whatever Konami shits out at this point lol. Though I will be open minded if Konami ever decides to actually give us a new game.

Wow, if people didn’t notice Mark Cerny (PS4 lead architect) is the technical producer for Death Stranding (credited in the trailer). ๐Ÿ˜€

Also this is just pure speculation, but I have a feeling Stefanie Joosten might be casted as a character in this game as well. She still follows Kojima Productions news and her agency Mickymactroy has been retweeting a lot of Kojima’s tweets lately as well. I could be completely wrong though haha.

Also, the fact that there is an empty circle area where Norman Reedus character is found, just like when The Terminator arrived in 1984, makes me think that he Traveled in Time &/ Space &/ Dimensions to get here!

And NO, i’m not saying its a Terminator Game, because is not, i just love Hideo’s Homage to Terminator, and the 80’s era of SF.

I got a feeling this game is going to be a letter to 80 SF Movies, like Blade Runner , Alien and Terminator!

I’ve been obsessed with Wiliam Blake’s quote.. couldn’t sleep last night thinking about it. Here’s my own interpretation of it. But remember guys.. “There are no facts, only interpretations” ๐Ÿ™‚

To see a world in a grain of sand
And a heaven in a wild flower
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand
    And eternity in an hour.

So let’s start with 3rd and 4th line, because they’re the things you should do to see a world in a grain of sand and heaven in a wild flower.

In life, there are moments that happens to you.. in these moments you feel that you have EVERYTHING(infinity) you ever wanted, these moments happens within a limited time(in an hour) but they feel eternal in your mind! After that moment(hour) is gone.. you keep searching for that moment again, that made you feel you had everything. Lemme give an example.. A video game maker like mr hideo kojima, the whole process of making games + watching the reactions of these who play his own creation + receiving praise for it.. That is his eternal moment where he feels he has EVERYTHING. When for example, he retires from making games.. he’ll feel empty.. he’ll desire that eternal moment where he felt he had everything(held infinity in the palm of his hand). Another example.. Messi. When he score goals in difficult matches in Champions league finals.. he feels the ADRENALINE, in these moments he feels he has everything!

Now let’s go back to 1st and 2nd lines.. When you live these eternal moments where you feel you have everything.. Everything else besides these eternal moments(the world) will be as insignificant as a grain of sand to you. And these moments are your own heaven.

So any fans here of Walking Dead? I don’t want to even imagine it ;(…but considering how season 6 ends in such brutal and most hella intense way ever… I think Negan killed Daryl.

I’ve heard the spoiler who Negan kill in the comic book, but I don’t think they follow it exactly so they can surprise the viewers. If Norman starts developing this with Kojima he might be busy, so my guess is in TWD Season 7 beginning we see he getting killed . What do you think?

I don’t really watch TWD but I’m sure that there will be a lot of hate for killing off such a character. I guess this is also why Kojima didn’t want to reveal Norman Reedus in his game yet, because people with think that he is gonna die in TWD.

Im not counting FFXV, Nier, Persona, The last guardian and Kingdom Hearts because these games were announced long time ago.
Sony conference was for sure the best!

      In no particular order:
      – Zelda (The first game that pressures me into buying a nintendo console after 19 years!)
      – God of War (Yep, pissed my pants, so good)
      – Horizon (Just straight awesomeness)
      – Detroit (Always loved their games)
      – Ghost Recon (Hell yea, I’m not a FPS guy but stuff like this catches my eye)
      – South Park (The best interview as well)

Best Conference was hands down Sony and the best I’ve ever seen on E3. That Orchestra, the lineup…just perfect. The first 30 minutes made me almost cry, because it was so heavy on the feels side. And that Resident Evil reveal was like reeeeeeeeally well made. I didn’t expect it. And of course KojiSamas appearance. I think no one really expected this much reveal for a game that only exists on the storyboard so far.

You can start with Deus Ex Human Revolution which is a direct prequel to this game ๐Ÿ™‚

Game is basically all about choice and how you want to approach each encounter. Want to go all guns blazing or a ghost that never left any presence?

Each entry path has multiple entry point way. You can use the vents or use back door passages by either hacking them or finding keypad codes to unlock them.

It’s really a fun game. Though the HR feels kinda outdated, especially after playing MGSV GZ/TPP. But it’s still an amazing game and one of the few last gen games i replayed so many times(i rarely do that, due to lack of time and moving forward with other games)

Is the story really important or is one of those games that its all about gameplay? I mean important like mgs which eventhough you can play the 4th one or the 5th one without having played the others, it would make such a difference to have played the previous ones.

          • It is currently unknown, how much of DE:HR story is needed to fully enjoy DE:MD, but judging by the trailers – not so much. I fully enjoyed DE:HR, even though I’ve never played previous 2 games (which is a shame, but still). Basically, DE:HR can be seen as a soft “reboot” of the franchise, focusing on times before previous games. It is really 50/50 now, will DE:MD be a straight forward sequel, or just the second game with same old Adam Jensen. So my advice, play DE:HR, it is still a great game, a great story. Then you can decide, wether to pick DE:MD up or not.

Ok, those elements may perhaps look redundant with other reporters work, however here is the result of the interview with Julien Chiรจze from gameblog.fr at E3.
He said he’ll share the full interview soon.

Hideo basically said he chose Sony since he has a real strong relation with them for years. Saying that if it was with another partner, he would still be looking after funding and stuff whereas here, he just explained what he wanted to do, and Sony went like : “Just do whatever you have to do..”

He said that the studio in December was no more than 10 square meters. He did the tech tour with Mark to review graphics engines and check ambiance in various studios. Now the office is much bigger but still just an office. They are still at fixing the kitchen.
Sony showed the percap tech to Hideo in San Diego and he then told them he needed to perform some tests asap. They even delayed one of their own projects scheduled in February, so Hideo could scan Norman at the end of March. They then also needed 2 months to process / fine-tune the acquired datasets. In parallel, they performed tests on various game elements.

He then confirmed that the graphics engine choice was not taken yet although they definitely short-listed few of them. He preferred not to drop names that soon but the final choice is imminent. Once they’ll be done with this choice they’ll be definitely up and running, Hideo added.
