It’s 2016, and this marks Kojima’s 30th year in the industry. It is also his first year as head of his own independent studio, Kojima Productions. At the start of the new year, Kojima lets his followers on Twitter know he is determined to keep giving it his all.

I sincerely hope he sticks to his words and does the best. MGSV been quite a disappointment from a fans perspective who played the first Metal Gear Solid on the PSX in 2002 as a six year old guy and grew with the series. It’s a huge disappoinment for a guy who shed tears the first time he ended every single game of the canon saga (MGS1-MGS4).
Gameplay wise it’s easily a 10/10. But the story left me cold. It’s just so sad and disappointing. Hope this will change in the future.
Can we not bring “disappointing from fans perspective” into this? I understand if you are disappointed but no need to claim that somehow the game is factually disappointing for every long-time fans because i for one had a extreme blast both gameplay and storytelling. It easily ranks up as the best MGS since MGS2 and is up there with the best games of this decade.
And what is it about the story that you find disappointing? No really i keep hearing this term thrown around without anyone really going indepth on why the story sucks in their opinion.
Hate it when people try to make it sound like the game was a disappoint for everyone, not sure why they can’t accept that a lot of people loved the game a lot. I was watching someone play on twitch the other day and someone in the chat said that the soundtrack is one of the few things they actually liked about the game, so I said that’s weird since it’s such an amazing game and he said that these streams are always filled with diehard fanboys. I asked him what he didn’t like about the game and he said the story makes no sense, the characters have no personality and the fox engine is garbage, I said the story is actually easier to understand than past games and asked what confused him but he didn’t answer of course. Then I asked what was wrong with the fox engine and all he could come up with was that you slip down hills sometimes and you pick up guns instead of bodies, I never had much trouble with those things though. Then the streamer said that when you put heaps of bodies in one spot the engine can’t take it and they start disappearing and reappearing, not sure why someone would bother trying that anyway.
Just feels like people try to hate the game sometimes and when you say you like the game it means you’re a diehard fanboy who can’t accept the obvious flaws. Guess this happens with every fan base for anything but it’s just really annoying when you can’t love a game without being a diehard fanboy.
Damn, I can’t believe I’m saying this because I love MGSV for many reasons and I’m a big fan so I refused to admit this before. But I think Life Is Strange is the best game I’ve played in years, it’s strange because I didn’t expect that at all when I started playing it… I still keep thinking of the ending and gonna do more playthroughs definitely ^-^.
Bros, are there others who feel the same? I’m not sure I remember when a game gave me similar strong feels the last time. It was maybe MGS4 or
MGS3, although I’ve played lots of games since then too.
Of course everyone got their own points, which make a game “best” or good but for me the most important part are them tearful emotions. These moments give lasting memories. MGSV had few scenes too for me which was great and of course the whole time in PT, just them horrorish feels. It’s when I know
developers make art, when they make me care about characters to feel this or just feel terrified for example in horror game.
Can’t wait for second season from Dontnod developers :).
P.S. I hope I’m not getting much hate because of this and don’t get me wrong, I still love MGSV. Not trying to start any negativities with this. Just wanted to say this, that’s all lol :D. I hope Kojima’s next game can make me feel powerful stuff too!

I loved it from the very beginning and it pictured a pretty ugly truth about schools and their students these days.
Life is Strange is a good game, but not without it’s problems. The ending suffered because of the previous choices we made and overall they could do much better with the puzzles.
But the atmosphere and interactive storytelling is great.

It’s a lot more subtle about it than MGS2, so subtle you can easily miss it, probably closer to Spec Ops the Line in terms of presentation – well, it gets pretty artsy and abstract towards the end, similar to MGS2: in fact exactly like MGS2, but yeah.
Dude, I loved reading through your analysis, even though I didn’t understand every complex word used :). One thing I absolutely love about LIS, is that you can’t know for sure how your actions effect in the future. Like in many moments, I thought I did the “right” decision, but afterwards I felt bad because of it.
Yeah, exactly. LIS is such an underated game. I tried convincing my friends but everytime I bring it up they look at me as if I am crazy. It’s great that I’m not the only one who had this game affect them on such a personal level. The relationship between Max and Chole reminds me a lot of a relationship I had with one of my friends after I moved away and slowly lost contact. Such a great game.

Actually yea I wish some game sites would have given it higher scores, LiS definitely deserve them. Although these days I trust user reviews more. But it’s funny when some yearly games get high scores when they are the same mindless and emotionless stuff, but then a game like LiS arrives and it get lower score on some sites like IGN.

You’re right :), I just feel silly changing my opinion like this after mostly praising TPP nonstop and it being #1, but it happens and glad ppl here understand :D. Anyway LIS and TPP are both amazing and gave me different feels. About DA2, I enjoyed it and imo Inquisition is awesome.

FFVIII or FF8, yeah so do I ^^. I love it sooo much 🙂 and I’ve gone over the years a battle in my mind, which I love the most FF7, 8 or 9 lol. But it’s a close battle between 7 and 8, 8 has that romance between Squall and Rinoa which is great :3 …and many amazing scenes like Garden Battle, Space Station+Lunar Cry.
After recently replaying FF7 though, it just made me realize how damn good game it is from almost two decades ago. I consider them masterpieces. Growing up playing them and MGS1 made me the person I am today and got me also addicted to RPGs :D. I had the habit of replaying them and MGS every year, but sadly I haven’t done it anymore.

I really enjoyed that game myself. Normally. I would take a few points off for some of the spotty acting, but since it was a budget game, I let it slide. There was a lot of really great dramatic beats in it, which made me really wish they had been given a larger budget to reeeeally knock it out of the park.
All in all though, it’s a damn solid game. Episode 4 was particularly good. I was really surprised they had the balls to do some of the stuff they did, and they did it well. Definitely one I’ll play again!
Oh boy episode 4 was insane, it literally dropped my jaw and took me a while to lift it up from ground. I love all episodes :).
Life Is Strange?
Must have went under my radar, will have to check it out.
Out of the many games I have played since 88 (Super Mario age 4)
few really stand out for me. The ones that do mirror what you describe as what a great game needs.
Other than the MG series, two games come to mind for me.
The Last of Us and Legend of Zelda:Twilight Princess.
If anyone remembers the end of Twilight Princess where Midna turns from an imp into a shadow princess. Then she goes on to break the twilight mirror with a single tear.
(It turns out only the true ruler of shadow world can utterly destroy the twilight mirror.)
That little annoying imp that was with you the whole game turns into a hot shadow princess then destroys the the only portal between your worlds.
I’m not doing it justice, the ending of Twilight Princess was one of the most emotional for me.
I should finally buy a Wii so I can replay the “GAMECUBE” version.
Come to think of it I have never played Skyward Sword either.

That gets my “Surprise Asskicker of 2015” award. Sure the dialogue was cringeworthy as fuck, the backgrounds were smudgy looking, and I actually didn’t care for the music at all. But it withheld my interest from the first moment of episode 1, to the finale of episode 5. Waiting for the next episode after having finished one, and all of the questions of “what’ll happen next?” was torment!
Also I gotta say that I don’t know what’s up with 5th games/episodes being unfinished, but that hurt the last episode and, of course MGSV, a lot.
I completely agree with you. I started playing Life Is Strange around five days ago and finished it within two days, but I enjoyed it more than Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. That is quite sad, considering how I am a huge Metal Gear Solid fan, and grew up with the game series. Generally speaking, Life Is Strange gave me more for my money – in the sense that it changed the way I think and has actually had an impact on my life. Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2 also gave me this insight, but with Snake Eater – my favourite Metal Gear Solid game – although it did not change the way I thought or lived, it still gave me an amazing experience. Simply put — Life Is Strange is everything a videogame should be, but it might have helped if it was a bit longer, and the graphics (textures) and lip-syncing were better.
Life Is Strange changed my life, and changed the way I see myself.
I think it was when I was getting through Episode 5 that it really hit me that it is probably one of the best video games ever made. It just felt so incredibly unique. And I fear that someone might hear that and think ‘oh great another overrated pretentious, artsy game…’ but it’s not like that. It was just a special sort of experience. Never have I felt an ending more encapsulate the entirety of a game. It felt like everything came together, and it made me think about everything that had happened in a meaningful way, the other characters, my own character, my actions, the world, life, existence…
I absolutely love MGSV, but oh gosh how amazing its ending could have been if it were more like Life is Strange.
Three games have really touched me, The Cat Lady, Spec Ops: The Line, and Life is Strange. Cat Lady is a bit more of a niche game, but if you play MGSV, YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO PLAY SPEC OPS THE LINE because it is fucking amazing if you appreciate a good story/ending. And while Life is Strange is completely different from MGSV, I still think Metal Gear fans should play it because it is just so damn special.
Yeah, Life is Strange belongs to my top 5 games ever. It makes you think of life, relationships, I believe it makes people better persons by teaching them to try truly care about those close to you. Also to be polite towards others :). I wish everyone would play this. The ending is something I was hoping out of MGSV, because LiS ending is one of the best and most emotional for me ever… I’m on my 2nd playthrough and I keep crying at same moments etc, even though I know what’s coming mostly. Such a beautiful game ;D and the soundtrack is so incredible…

I’m so addicted to LiS lol and I admit I have a crush on Max + Chloe XD and when I’m not playing I keep listening to OST and checking youtube videos . No game have made me this addicted since 1998 PS1 games I think.
I haven’t played spec ops yet, was planning to buy it at Steam sale but I had already bought quite many so passed on that ;). Thx I keep it in mind.

I do and love this genre :D, I grew up watching 80s and 90s movies so its really cool that people still do retro music like that.
My big brother showed me couple years ago few amazing artists like Pertubator, Lazerhawk and Miami Nights 1984. I can link vids when get on PC but you maybe know the same ones already haha :). Carpenter is one of the new artists I’ve listened.

With all due respect,I highly disagree with the list.We have AC:Syndicate,Until Dawn and The Order 1886 on the list,but not Bloodborne or Batman:Arkham Knight.Sure Batman was a little disappointing,but at least it was better than 1886,and I think Life Is Strange deserved to be on the list,too.
I agree about Life is Strange and Bloodborne, I think they’re in my top 3 with TPP. But it’s just them opinions, y’know :). In the end we all don’t play the same games, different experiences and likes.
I never played AC Syndicate, Batman: AK or UD yet so can’t rank them myself. But glad I managed to get LiS. I feel kinda ashamed that I didnt follow it from day 1…
