Metal Gear series lifetime sales have surpassed 49.2 million
Konami has announced in their latest financial result that the Metal Gear series has now surpassed 49.2 million copies in worldwide lifetime sales, as of March 2016.
In the Pachislot & Pachinko Machines business, we intend to release new pachislot machines, SEVEN’S BEAT, in collaboration with beatmania, a music genre game from the Konami Group, and METAL GEAR SOLID SNAKE EATER, which was derived from the ultra large-scale video game title METAL GEAR series (surpassed 49.2 million copies sold worldwide as of end of March 2016). This is the first model loaded on the next-generation cabinet BIGBOSS, featuring the industry’s first full-HD surface 32-inch LCD, and equipped with a 124 GB large-capacity ROM for the LCD.
This means the series has done quite well in the past year: at the end of March of 2015 sales were at 41.2 million, meaning an increase of 8 million since then. This can probably be largely attributed to the succes of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

If that’s correct then TPP is the best selling MG game to date surpassing MGS2 sales. We’re not counting GZ numbers either.
Would be great but at least a substantial amount of copies were not obviously TPP, but possibly other opuses on various platforms independently or also partly implied by the marketing and overall hype around TPP. Out of 8M, I bet at least 500 000 – 1 M were not TPP…
That would still put it above MGS2, but vgchartz are reporting TPP to be at 4.95 million.

As you know MGS2 was plateform exclusive, and way less hyped or well noted at release. Always interesting to compare in all cases.

The one that impress me the most is Brano Siles. He took few years more because he wrote as well his marvelous engine at his moms place, ALONE. Old-school demo-sceners know how to speak to the machines. On a tech stand-point, his tech surpass any professional techno out there by faaaar (Fox, Cry, UE, not obliged to believe me but I swear he is on top of DIY dudes).

I had vague knowledge of voxels commonly being used in the various lighting methods game engine’s employ, didn’t know it could be applied to geometry as well. Yet again I don’t know that much about voxels. It seems voxels can eat up less of an engines budget than polygons? I dunno, I need to look this up, thanks for posting that; really interesting stuff 😛
Normally voxel renderers are seriously budget consuming but that’s where demo-sceners / hackers have the habit to make photo-realistic 3D demos fitting in 4k programs in contests (like Inigo Quilez for example).
Siles won many first place at those contests, and decided to write his voxel renderer that, I have to say, out-perform any other developed so far by a level of magnitude of at least 100x…
The key is in data compression because traditional polygons force to map 2D textures at some point on surfaces. As far as you find a method for issuing 3D texture data for voxels, it de facto eliminate a lot of linear algebra problems (whether for lighting or physics and more) because all react as 3d pixels, you less need to struggle with multiple projections schemes.
All this works of course and again as far as you find a suitable compression method to inflate-deflate your data on-line. It seems this unique guy managed to put a finger on such promising methods.
Love his work, but also how he shared his efforts, convincing most academic fellows about the obvious viability of his approaches.
Ah, I see. With polygons the space between the vertices are filled with a 2D texture which can cause mathematical errors and requires work around’s, but a voxel is essentially a 3-dimensional pixel, which can introduces less errors but is far more demanding on the system, due to it having to render more voxels than it would polygons for a given scene? That’s my understanding.
Your understanding is 1:1 perfectly exact. A dimension more introduce tremendous extra loading charges but tremendous less processing charge. The rendering hit with voxels (or “atoms”) does not depend on the scene complexity in term of vertices number but is more bound to the image resolution or at least your possibly intelligent ray-tracing resolution areas. Just feel free to ask if I look too synthetic ! I’ll try to make it where it serves (this are heavy subjects but you catch pretty good, my fellow).

Yeah, when Hideo was looking for a tech, I wondered if he should check this one. But even if they could have co-operate, despite what we see, and according to Siles, his project needs a lot more efforts to reach a state mature enough for real AAA. But this tech is the most promising because despite the HUGE quantity of voxels it is able to handle, it appear that many operations like comfortably animating them looks as well straight-forward for the engine which is also a quite big challenge for voxel based renderers.

This game gave me Devil May cry 3 vibe.. It looks 100x better than that Dmc reboot. If this ever get released on a ps4 i’ll definitely get it. In terms of fighting mechanic/visuals, it gets a 10/10 for me. The character design based on the characters i’ve seen so far looks overused.. the characters look like typical Final Fantasy characters, baby faces/cliche hairstyle. Is he doing the voice acting too?. If he can hook me up with the story as DMC3 did.. This is going to be my top hack/slash game.

Yeah, he suffered enough to understand all that is implied in developing games. What’s cool in the programming community is that everybody is humble between each other, even when sharing feelings about supposed weak code because they never know in which conditions or possibly hard management pressure the efforts were issued. So you can imagine how embarrassed he could be when some, obviously not aware about what’s involved, are attacking the work of big and skilled studios in favor to his work. As you said, he has to stop those bullshit bashing right away.
Yeah. For me personally the game doesn’t look that interesting (not the biggest fan of hack and slash games), but what he has done is nothing short of impressive.
Based on the way he talks about it, it seem even he knows if he will ever finish it. He describes it more of being just a thing he did in his spare time out of his love for FFXV. Now that Sony’s or epic gas picked him up this could change.
Reading this made me realize how long Kojima has been stuck under the MGS umbrella, his next game is going to be VERY interesting, whether its crap or amazing (read as “I expect amazing”)
Hopefully, the dev he’ll hire will have some MGS based inspirations, so he won’t loose too much time explaining what he need in all involved fields such as gameplay mechanics, but as well stuff like UI design which was quite advanced in all his titles. Fingers crossed !!

I have a special love for stories that communicate narrative without the use of dialogue. This was the aspect of MGSV’s story I appreciated and enjoyed the most – the lack of dialogue (in most cases).
Also Unity is looking pretty dank here.

Yeah. You’re right. I just had the basic personal licence of the engine and worked with regular assets. I haven’t opened the software in almost a year, I might start again if I didn’t forget c# already.
I think Unity is quite powerful, despite sometimes feeling that engines using several different coding layers / languages that can achieve the same things can appear misleading and more tiring to integrate in our minds. For example, in UE4, shifting from previous versions emacs-like *.uc to full plain C++ feels like a real rest even if C++ can appear less easy to work with.
Fortunately, c# coding is quite future-proof and not too exotic compare to other languages. When I tested Unity I was really impressed by its quite fast prototyping possibilities. They managed to aim at a cool and easy to use engine scheme, very comfortable in all its user interface features.
And yeah, default packages can put you quickly on map, but default stuff is obviously always a bit raw and can present various kind of unwanted glitches and artifacts here and there. Repairing / fixing those glitches or even trying to tackle problems more from scratch is time consuming but pretty rewarding when all finally running as neat as expected (this, of course applicable to any engine).
If I give it another shot, I may use the simplest default packages to keep it all clear (at least as far as possible), and use them more as a Unity “dictionary” regarding how a given implementation for a specific functionality should be planned.

Thanks. I spent some time trying to learn c++ but for some reason or another it never stuck. I signed up for a quick course on Python and found it very easy and fun to code and moved on to C# from there. I try to use simple scripts and make vast use of Unity’s features, that way I keep track of things easily in debugging.
C++ can appear from more ancient ages but often “cycles” firmly back in the industry and game dev in general. C# is not that far from C++, I am sure that while playing more with also other languages in your career, you may feel progressively fine with C++ too (yet say for simply porting libs from one to another, could happen), even while not specially training on it.
Python is awesome and C# is quite neat. Happy dev !

Mario is a bit to GTA5 what GTA5 is to MGSV in terms of popularity but in terms of enemy AI mechanics (so somehow stealth), MGSV still does not have any competing equivalent (my take).

Interesting, back in those times, and due to major technical HW limitations, strangely, the inspiration was limited as well and many were copying each other concepts. The biggest tsunami of such copies even contributed in introducing new and sometime better made copies (eg. all the “Doom-likes” for the fps field).
MG on the other hand, always stayed in the pioneering side, thanks to who you know.

In Spy Fiction there is also clothes changing which is really important in the game which is copied from Hitman franchise.
But as I wrote in review. Game is really cool and gameplay is very great! Its like dlc to MGS2 with new characters! Hahaha! 🙂
