Metal Gear Solid V will reward you for not using Reflex Mode
After announcing that the slow motion mechanic introduced in Metal Gear Solid V, called Reflex Mode, will be optional, Kojima Productions also added that although they feel the feature will make sense when you try it for yourself, players will also be rewarded for clearing missions without it.
The mode was discussed in the latest episode of the Kojima Productions Alert, the studio’s official podcast.
“[Reflex Mode] simulates Snake’s lightning quick reflexes.” host Sean Eyestone explained. “When he notices something odd, like you’re about to be spotted by an enemy, you have a split second, where the action kind of slows down, to simulate his instinctive reaction to being spotted. And you have an instant to react, and keep an alert from being sounded.”
Some people are worried it will make the game too easy, but this feature is completely optional. There will also be bonuses for clearing missions without Reflex Mode, but it will make the game much more challenging.
Having said that, the staff does feel the feature was necessary. In previous Metal Gear games that world was hand crafted to give the player a certain experience, and they knew exactly where each enemy was placed on the map, and what direction the player would be facing. But the open world changes all this, and enemies can spot you from any angle. It can get frustrating, because you can get spotted from any angle, and there won’t always be cover to hide behind.
“Yes, it changes the way Metal Gear Solid works so far, but you’ll feel it when you play it. It makes sense.” staff member Ken Mendoza assured.
“It doesn’t make the game easier, it just helps to balance things out.” Sean Eyestone explained.

Personally I am going to play the game with the feature off I just want the most challenging experience I can get
Why do people aways have to start an opinion with “Personally”? if youre talkin about your opnion, its obviously personally!
Take “personally” out of the start of your comment and it have the same meaning, but its less annoying!
Well it’s my personal opinion sorry if that annoys you
Well PERSONALLY is how I take it when people like @Janeo flaunt their stupidity by being redundant since it wastes that much more of everyone’s precious time.
What I don’t like, is that when the enemy spots you, the Reflex Mode gets instantly activated. I hope that when we turn it off, we also get rid of the slow motion.
As far as I know reflex mode is the slow motion. So if you turn it off the slow motion option goes away.
Hopefully you’re right.
Yeah, look at the description. He’s explaining how the slowed down time is supposed to represent Big Boss’s reflexes. That’s why they’re calling it reflex mode.
think of this reflex mode as a sort of spider sense. and i mean, its big fucking boss, right? he’s supposed to be acutely aware of his surroundings. also, think of splinter cell conviction’s mark and execute mechanic, or even arkham asylum/city’s counter fighting mechanic. it all serves a purpose and should be considered an evolution of the protagonist. since it can be toggled we can even think of it as a sort of aim assist feature. serves to aid the player optionally.
Hey Nyxus, just want to say a there’s little problem, it’s not much, I’d just like to point it out. I’m glad you fixed that when you click the “more”, it used to go straight to the pictures in the article. But now, when I click “more” It goes straight to the middle of the article page instead of the top. Idk if it’s me, but it’s nothing big, just want to give you a heads up
I think it sets the page at the spot after the ‘more’. Not much I can do about that, that’s just how that function works. But you can also click on the title of the article instead of the ‘more’ button, then it will open at the top of the page.
Oh wow didn’t realize that. Thanks anyway
just like the yellow highlight from Deus Ex HR, i’ll probably turn this off ^^
