Metal Gear turns 30
Today marks a milestone for Metal Gear. Exactly 30 years ago, on July 13th 1987, the first game in the series was released in Japan for the MSX2 home computer. Simply titled Metal Gear, this was the start of what would become one of the most treasured and influential video game franchises, with decades worth of sequels, prequels and spin offs.
The first and the latest release in the franchise
To celebrate the occasion, here are some trivia and accomplishments:
- More than 51.3 million Metal Gear games have been sold
- Metal Gear games are available on a wide range of different systems, including arcades, Game Boy Color, and mobile phones
- In 2015, Metal Gear Solid (1998) was voted best game of all time by PlayStation fans
- Over the years lots of different types of merchandise have been produced, including action figures, soundtracks, artbooks, but also jewelry, alarm clocks and lunch boxes
- There have been several adaptations to Metal Gear stories into different media, like audiobooks, novels and digital graphic novels
- Metal Gear games have received many different awards over the years, including a DICE Award, Golden Joystick, Famitsu Awards and PlayStation Awards

Happy birthday again. Lol the only sad thing is that most likely there won’t be anything worth of the occasion. Oh well at least Kojima gave us one final Metal Gear Solid and he is finally off doing something entirely new.
Nothing from Konami yet? I hate how they teased anniversary announcements. Gives them the whole year I guess.

My brother has been playing MGSV lately. Man I love the cutscene styles despite having no substance compared to other older games.
I don’t mind the series resting for now. It’s probably going to be hard just for the next main entry(if Konami actually plans on doing something) to top MGSV in terms of presentation and gameplay.
Even Deus Ex series was put on hold. So I don’t know what Stealth games to play nowadays. I want to try the new Hitman, but I’m not feeling it tbh.
I’m the same, at least when it comes to Hitman , I played the beta and honestly while the idea it’s good I didn’t like how it was executed , idk maybe it’s just me.
i gotta say i loved the shit out of hitman season 1 the possiblitys and maps and details are just superb.
That being said i just can’t and won’t support this episodic type bullshit thats why i bought it used and gave it away afterwards.

Nice. I wanted to get this, but it was super expensive and super rare in my country. I couldn’t get my hands on this, but I got a MGSV PS4 bundle in the end 😀
Oh man if you got the red PS4 that is even better , I would’ve wanted to get it but I think it didn’t even come out in the US and I already had a PS4. Also I wanted to get the big arm but that was only for Japan, it later came out here by itself but it was super expensive and it was just the arm.

I hope Konami do something real instead of posting and twitting. It’s their biggest franchise, I guess.
TBH, I want the series to end now, but the people at Konami has a different way of thinking and they want more.So let’s see what happens…
Same here. The series ended with Kojima leaving it. However, if they made a reboot with the right people involved, it could be interesting. Maybe even a Western studio and see what they do with it, but doesn’t detract from the legacy. Other than that, Metal Gear Rising 2: Redeemon would be something 😀
Why a lot of people say that the anniversary is on July 7h?
