Understanding foreign languages in The Phantom Pain requires an interpreter
Some new information on how language will work in MGSV: The Phantom Pain has emerged during Episode 29 of Kojima Station. We have heard before that Snake will come across people speaking various languages, and that will have an effect on the game. As reported by JunkerHQ on Twitter:
“Not only will you not understand soldiers speaking a foreign language if you don’t have an interpreter at Mother Base who speaks their language, you won’t be able to interrogate them either.”
So you will have to find a translator and recruit him. Also, while Snake was fluent in Russian during the time of MGS3, he can no longer speak the language in The Phantom Pain. That part of his brain has been affected by the accident.

Ohhh shit ….Snake not speaking Russian made me sad now ….why u do tis Kojima? :_(
You have Ocelot for Russian Soldiers.
….still sad :/
About “Understanding foreign languages” can any “Interpreter” translate this, because it looks nothing like the Official System Requirements, yet they are the most Recent Ones shown in Kojima Station’s Episode 29, so i’m confused, are these, Minimum, Req or for 4K?

I imagine it’s the requirements?
That’s what i think as well, but i want to know what the Japanese writing says, what does teh word under Konami means?
The requirements have already been released and this is higher than the minimum and recommended requirements.
Which is exactly why i’m confused, what do these Requirements are for exactly, because it seems that it has the Minimum RAM, but an even bigger CPU then the Recommended Req.?
don’t mean to start a flame war but all of that “confusion” is why people stray away from pc gaming. Such a headache wondering about your minimum requirements like it’s a job interview.
or one could compare it to automatic transmission vs. manual transmission.
No, this is not usual in PC Gaming, this is a Translation problem, not a PC Gaming Problem.
I hope the brain damage won’t be an explanation for his different, darker personality. I want BB to change because of what he went through, not some random head accident
Why not both, going trough Hell while having Personality problems?
Exactly
Posttraumatic stress disorder
I thought Nyx was joking when he wrote that sentence, no? It isn’t a quote…
No, that is what JunkerHQ wrote on Twitter. It just isn’t a direct quote.
dat brain damage could cause nearly everything especially if you are in metal gear universe lol. ” events in ground zeroes and phantom pain, actually never happened… due to brain damage etc etc etc. “. in the end of the game.. that wouldnt surprise me lol. its kojima we’re talking about. he can destroy and create the world all over again. Brain damage, son.
Well it is a Solid Excuse.
Metal Gear Fringe.
In the Metal Gear Universe he is Literally GOD, so he can do whatever he wants.
yeah suuuure why naat ? and we get to travel the world looking for BB’s scattered brain pieces, unlocking a language with each one we find. Kooojjiiiimaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa !!!!
And when we put all the pieces together, Shenron pops out of Big Boss’ skull and grants us 3 wishes. Well two really because one is reserved to revive Krillin. Whelp, time to hit tumblr to find some MGSXDBZ cross-over.
dete koi tobikiri zenkai power.
Waiting to use this
, son.
The Phantom Pain is going to take forever to beat! lol
40hs in. “Have you beaten the game?” “No, I’m looking for a translator to interrogate a prisoner, so I can start the first mission.” LOL
hail trolljima
So he forgot how to speak an entire language? in other news Kojima has said after TPP snake will suffer another accident causing him to forget everything and think he’s a chef. He’ll teach us how to cook snakes, rats and more disgusting things all while avoiding being captured by the enemy.
It will be called ‘MGS: it’s ridiculous but you’ll still buy it.’ It will be beatable in 5 minutes and will cost 39.95 before taxes.
As usual with Metal Gear, it’s not as far from reality as you may think. Look up ‘foreign language syndrome’. Usually it’s the other way around (people acquire a foreign language or accent).
You can’t learn a language by getting a head injury. That’s science fiction. Accents are another thing but I’ve never heard of anyone forgetting an entire language from a head injury.
it is possible since comas especailly *prolonged ones*have an impact on part of the brain wich does the math and language department …
There have been people who have suffered such serious head injuries that they reverted back to the mental stage of a toddler. But those kinds of injuries wipe out pretty much everything, they don’t make you only forget a language. It’s just unheard of.
The brain isn’t like a computer where you can just have certain things deleted and it not affect the rest of your computer. Maybe short term memories but just forgetting an entire language that you were fluent in? I don’t think there is any recorded case of that happening.
Hm, check this out: http://www.behavioralandbrainfunctions.com/content/5/1/17
Metal Gear was of course never purely realistic. Usually the things in there are based on reality though. But this idea of losing the ability to speak a second language doesn’t seem that farfetched, even though it may work differently in reality.
I don’t believe it
Let’s not forget that Metal Gear is a Over The Top Graphics-Novel like world, exaggerated in an Artistic way.
Well this is metal gear we are talking about ….. so expect things to be we different ^^
To be fair, we don’t know the extend of Big Boss’ injuries. So we can’t say what he can and cannot do. Also, we’re not taking into account the PSTD where he might have shut down part of his memory on purpose because it was too painful. Say like…Operation Snake Eater for example where he spoke Russian. He might know Russian but is making himself forget it and when he hears it, it may sound like gibberish to him. But we won’t know until we play the game.
I remember reading something somewhat related to this some time ago, so I googled it and found this: http://www.popsci.com/science/article/2013-07/can-you-really-wake-no-memories-speaking-different-language
I’d say possible, yet not very common. Not even close to far-fetched by MGS standards, though.
Lets just hope that the interpreter is not the same that Mr. Kojima has on his presentations. Or we are screwed.
Hahah, that was a Good One “You’re Pretty Gooooooood!”
It would be awesome if the translation appeared in movie subtitles. Yellow font and all.
I’m pretty sure Modders will make a Subtitle like that.
“You won’t be able to interrogate them either”
Maybe if the guards had their actual lines recorded, and spoke their language when being interrogated, instead of random gibberish noises with subtitles, then I would care, but as it turns out… I don’t care.
That’s probably the only flaw I find with MGSV, in regards to immersion.
I think Kojima already stated that every character will be fully voiced in their native language… even though we can expect recycled lines on minor characters.
as long as guards talk they could all say the same thing and id be happy
Brain damage changed his voice! 😀
Brain damage was so intense that changed his voice even before he actually took brain damage.
Clearly we need more medical research on this!
Yeah, time to invest in some elite medical research sheeps team!
Better add some wolves and deers too!
Yay! 😀
I actually had that happen to one of my teachers. After her brain surgery her voice was high pitched like Mickey mouse.
Now this is some freakin’ awesome news, TPP just keeps getting better and better the more I hear of it!
“That part of his brain has been affected by the accident.”
What is the accident Kojima!? I WANNA KNOW >:O !
I mean how he get the shrapnel-horn :P…
There’s so much gameplay in this that I never will play anything else, bless kojima dousnt retire the metal gear series
That’s pretty cool.
That’s another excellent detail in the game. This is one of the reasons why MGS is my favourite saga!
Just a thought, maybe…
Snake has unlearned all the languages you don’t understand, and the player can act as the translator if he knows other featured languages. You could just google it all, I know…. maybe if there were no subtitles for any language you can’t understand in game.
Sorry English native speakers 🙁
that’s a cool feature, but the part about BB forgetting Russian sounds a bit lazy to me
the fact that when you interrogate soldiers and they just make a weird noise unlike MGS3 when they used to have full interrogation dialog (it was “passable” in MPW since the low space on the UMD) its kind of lazy too,,, also they didn’t bother in putting area tracks on cannon games since MGS3
Finally brain damage confirmed. I’ve been waiting a long time to hear that, and now all they need to do is say which area is affected predominantly. I’ve got money on the prefrontal cortex.
great feature!! all mgs games have this kind of little but impressive details and since this game is open world can’t imagine what kind of crazy things kojima adds this game
Damn wanted Snake to speak Russian just a little bit 😀
This is nice feature and it’s amazing how Kojima and his team can come up with little things like this that makes the game even better.
Can’t wait for the game for sure!

Well for Russian you have Ocelot to Translate for you.
LOL i didn’t notice Translator-san on the background of the soldier just now XD
Heh, was wondering when someone would notice.
This will be one of those games in which you have 9% of progress after beating it for the first time.
makes you wonder though.. if every single mission will be like Ground Zeroes. not good for OCD
The brain damage thing in this context is so trivial that I’ll accept. Oooo, now BB can’t remember how to speak Russian, big deal.
“Brain damage will affect my ability to speak an entire language” Bravo Kojima
imagine passing by Khattab in TPP
Ugh, why do I visit this site? The wait for this game is painful and every new detail makes the wait more intense. I hope we get a release date soon. Hopefully at the video game awards since Kojima’s a judge there.
