Guillermo del Toro says he’s done with video games
Website Shacknews reports on an interview the held with Guillermo del Toro during San Diego Comic Con, during which he talked a bit about his plans in the video game industry. Del Toro was clear: he won’t be making games again.
“I have proven to be the albatross of video games. I joined THQ, and THQ goes broke. I join Kojima, and Kojima leaves Konami. I have decided, in order not to destroy anyone else’s life, I have decided I will never again get involved in video games. Otherwise, I’ll join someone and his house will explode, or something.”
Silent Hills, the horror collaboration between Kojima and del Toro was announced last year, and cancelled earlier this year.

“I was in an apprenticeship. I learned a lot from Kojima-san, of course, and I learned a lot from my experience at THQ. I did. It changed the way I see narrative. We put two years of work in THQ. It was insane. We mapped it out, we did the viable, we did the outlines, we did the screenplay. We did a bunch of stuff. I know some of the tricks, or the stuff that I wanted to learn, I learned. Then I went to the side of Kojima-san, because he’s a master, and I can gladly say that we are friends and I love his work and I will continue learning from him as a friend. But I am not… if I join another video game, World War III will start.”
Del Toro will still let others make games based on his work, but he’s not planning to get involved himself anymore.
“I can be creative about it, and I can be educated about it, and talk about it in a way that helps them make the video game. But no – I can’t.”
Last month del Toro also said he is still working on doing something together with Kojima, but going by this current interview it doesn’t seem like this will be a video game.

Del Toro was also joking about WWIII, Ralexion’s joke just added to what he said.
He just where the hunour was it’s a “hyperbole” a reality of we would give up a lot for Silent Hills taken to an unrealistic and unwanted extreme.

Yeah, I think it has less to do with cultural differences, I think it has to do with a smaller more personal way of thinking.
The joke is funny in two rights. One it has some merit to it as we all want Silent Hills really badly, and his joke takes that concept and pushes it to the extreme saying WWIII is worth it, it is so extreme and based off a real thought it is really funny.
I’m not sure about cultural differences, but I never take things that seriously, I personally do not take life or what other people that seriously, it only makes life harder. I also would not want to miss a good joke because I took it too seriously, most importantly though Jokes are all about making light of serious subjects, to say a joke isn’t funny because it joked about something serious is kind of weird because that is their purpose, you have to be able to laugh and find humour in everything.
Some people just seem to get offended by things like this. I remember in high school my history teacher would joke about every event he talked about throughout history, including the wars. I also remember I made some type of joke about something that happened years ago, don’t remember what it was or what the joke was but someone sitting close to me took offence to it and reminded me that many people died there. I just think some people are too sensitive when it comes to these type of jokes, it’s not like any joke like that is meant to disrespect the people that died but it’s more to make light of a dark situation.
No one in the world would want WW3 to happen. But it was just a joke, be it a good or bad one and shows how much some upvoters would want to see their SH happen, that’s all.

I think Kojima loves games too much to completely turn his back on them, I personally think (hope) Kojima will find an ingenious way to fuse an actual feature film with a game – kinda like what Remedy is doing with Quantum Break.

Yeah he made some if I remember correct, but not all :).
Anything from Ennio Morricone in Kill Bill is lifted from his previous work. That L’Arena track is originally from the movie The Mercenary. I think the only original score/music in Kill Bill is the music written by RZA.
But Morricone *is* creating an original score for the upcoming Hateful Eight! And that’s really exciting to me.

This one is a fake actually, if you check the BLES code below the 18+ age symbol (BLES-01971) you get redirected to Ground Zeroes and not TPP. But leaks might still follow in the future, so keep a wary eye out.

Now that I was right, that whatever Hideo and Del Toro are working on is not a Video Game, what would you like them to do, a Movie, a Series or a Mini-Serires?
I personally would love a Miniseries, as Hideo’s storytelling is best told in a 6-8 hours Story, think of True Detective, that kind if Slow paced story, exploring every aspect of their characters.

That is only with crappy writers and American TV thinking, Kojima has a complete story to tell with a plan, a beginning, middle and end, the only way it would burn out is if it was simply written to go on forever until it sucked and got cancelled.

Well knowing Kojima his primary strength is betraying standard convention that then causes innovation in the medium. Kojima has shown his love and understanding of film time and time again and what I would specifically hope he could do is really explore and play around with the paradox between a pre defined narrative and interaction which allows players experience the narrative parallel, tangential or other than the ones we are railroaded through. But I see what you mean, you can explore this concept in games a la The Stanley Parable but I think it would be more intelligible easier to comprehend combining cinema and games – which I guess has been already done before with game cutscene, so I dunno, I just babbled on and skirted around what I truly wanted to say, it’s difficult to put in plain words, but I have faith in our Lord that whatever he does next will be amazing.

Hey guys, I noticed that on PS3 in the european PS store it says that The Phantom Pain can be played in 1080p. But I thought it was confirmed to be 720p. Do you think this is a mistake or is the game really gonna be 1080p on PS3?

What, you mean the reason I’m getting the PS4 version? Well the graphics are better, the online community is probably bigger on it and the collector’s edition comes out exclusively on PS4 and Xbox one.

I have to say, this Del Toro thing reminded of another filmmaker that have the bad luck on his side: Terry Gilliam (also a former Monty Python member). He’s been making movies for 40-30 years (sometihng like that), and every single movie of his encounter troubles: over-budgets, commercial failures, headaches for the movie studios that banked his movies, and more important: Heath Ledger’s death, while he was in the middle of shooting Dr. Parnassus. And he’s still there, doing the best he can do.

Kamiya is an ass. And Platinum refused a lot of Kojima’s input for Rising too. I’d rather see Kojima team up the original creator of Silent Hill (who now works on the Siren games) or Naughty Dog.

I mean holy fucking shit, Silent Hill was dead. I’d actually get angry when I heard they were releasing another one. Then those 2 not only revived it and made it good, but they made it great. Made it into a perfect horror game that could have revived the genre totally. They could’ve very easily released another 2 or 3 afterwards too. Easy money. I’d love to find out what happened at Konami because they made SO MANY stupid decisions in a row.
I still think it was something to do with microtransactions in 5. I think Kojima knew they were going to stuff them into it back in 2012 because he gives blatant clues in the deja vu mission. He basically tells us.

Dr. Clark and Para-Medic being the same person was just a retcon (Not just TTS, Clark was a man in both original MGS dubs). The MGS4 Database tries to explain it by claiming that Naomi had never met Para-Medic in person, and the closest thing to contact she’d had was reading Para-Medic’s research notes, so she just assumed she was a man. Interestingly enough, Kris Oprisko and Ashley Wood’s MGS1 comic from 2004 refers to Para-Medic as a woman, so it’d obviously been decided quite a while before MGS4 that they’d be merged into the same person.

We can’t put the %100 blame on translators,either.Konami should’ve put some testers on the English version to fix eventual errors.That “BigBoss’ coma” thing is a translation error for sure,but this one and “Olga’s child”,we can’t really blame translators.

Retcon, Kojima pretty much made up the story as he went along, he didn’t have a master plan for the whole series back when he made MGS1. By making Paramedic and Dr. Clark the same person he gave us a sense that everything was connected.

off discussion but i must say it.
Ground zeroes in hard is a very bad stealth game.
Inconsistent cone of visions for the guards (and behavior in a more general frame), reflex mode with diffrent duration times and many others little things that ruin the whole stealth aspect of the game and especially the “ghost” play style.
Too many unbalanced unexpected factors that favor the action part of the game (get spotted, kill 2-3 guards hide and repeat) and i am starting to fear the possibility that the same happens in TPP.
Maybe i am a very bad player and i cant play it properly but please i would like to here if anyone thinks the same, after all we are all brothers here.

Hmm, I didn’t use reflex mode at all. 🙂 Turned it straight off, so it was more challenging for me. I
S-ranked all the missions on Hard (took a few tries though). Ground Zeroes was fine for me haha.
If you watched the demos that came out this year for TPP, you have A LOT more options/ tactics/ strategies compared to Ground Zeroes. You can take an action route, stealth or a mix of both!
Ground Zeroes didn’t have an vast open world like TPP for you to play around with.
Also one good thing about Ground Zeroes, was that Kojima Productions was able to collect all the feed back from the fans and incorporate them into TPP. So maybe your concerns will be fixed up by the time TPP is released! 😀
From the recent demos, you can see that they fixed and polished some of Snake’s animations such as Snake being able to slide down ladders and sticking to walls was optimised. Also they had way more time to polish TPP for bugs and glitches, so hopefully the game will be good to go! 🙂

I wonder… might those updates from Phantom Pain be patched into Ground Zeroes? I’m still wondering what the (almost never mentioned now) thing is that has “never been done before” regarding Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain.
Didn’t Kojima say that if we 100% Ground Zeroes that we’ll get a surprise that hasn’t been done in the history of gaming? Or was the “never been done” thing separate from getting 100% GZ?

I read that Kojima originally wanted Paz to be dead and rotting away in her cage next to Chico along with some other changes to the level. Pretty brutal, but maybe it’ll be that.
I’d actually prefer if it was that we got to play as Chico and Paz or get to see their story from the tapes. I can’t think of any game that’s done that before, although you could argue that technically games like GTA 5 and Resident Evil Zero sort of did it, just playing from a different perspective. But I can’t think of any game where we get to play what we hear or read in a journal or tape.
Hmm, I’ve never really experienced anything like that and I played on hard for quite a while. Then again I had reflex switched off and markers off too for a while. I’m always well aware of when I’ll get spotted. Any time I do end up getting shot at is totally my own fault. Do you play on PS3/4/Xbox or PC?
Remember, the GZ map is pretty small compared to what we’ll get in TPP. It’ll be far more varied overall and the layouts and designs will be more varied too. Plus we’ll have the story to push us along!

Gosh. I hope he hasn’t showed too much. We’ve seen so much that it feels like there’ll be no surprises. Knowing Kojima though we’ve probably seen 0.1% of it. And part of me is growing more and more suspicious, if the game was basically a bigger version of what we’ve seen I don’t think he’d show this much. I still think that this is a red herring and that something big will happen that nobody is aware of.
How much of 3 and 4 were showed before release? What were the surprises on playing it? I wasn’t really into MGS back then so didn’t experience the build up.

I was exactly the same bro, I didn’t like it first when the hd collection came out and it wasnt until GZ was about to release that I played it and it’s so good bro, once you’re used to the game play, it becomes a really really good game.

Yes I’ve been saying this a lot , but mgs3 it’s the only game that has ever made me cry, with the exception of mgs4. It is indeed one of the best games ever.
Totally agree with both of you. Just think about that, a PS2 game still rivals, and beats all PS3 and PS4 games with the exception of MGS4. MGS games artistically destroy EVERY other series. Just Snake having that dream in the chopper in MGS4… the atmosphere and feeling you get from it is just perfect, it’s real interactive art. You truly feel for him. MGS3 is just incredible, a masterpiece.
Think of how different all of the games are yet they all fit together perfectly without feeling like starkly different experiences. I mean you could go from MGS1 to Ground Zeroes without much of a problem. It’s all because Kojima overlooked every little detail. That shows that it’s true art.
The same way you could watch Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket and Barry Lyndon and feel that they’re all made by the same person. There’s something almost transcendent in how people express themselves artistically. You can just “feel” when a certain personality comes out through it. Kojima has that ability.
