Here’s how Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is censored in Japan (spoilers)
Much like Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, one of the cutscenes in The Phantom Pain has been censored in Japan to make it less graphic. Same as in the prologue, subject of the censorship is Paz’ stomach wound, and visual tricks are used to cover some of the nasty things going on.
The most noticeable difference is that the Japanese version doesn’t have the intestines slipping out of the cut. You can see a side-by-side comparison of the untouched version and the censored one below (spoilers for those who haven’t completed Paz’ storyline in The Phantom Pain).

I loved that scene. Paz storyline is my second favorite in the game because of how mysterious it was. It was a Silent Hill moment in the game. If MGSV:TPP had 2-3 more of these different storylines I would be so happy. I mean the game has so many struts and bases but only one room is really that important and mysterious.

Yeah, this and the TPP Paz scenes were the strongest scenes in the game. Too bad it didn’t have more like this. It needed them so bad.

It’s a mystery and it doesn’t matter. That is the beauty of it.
There should be no explanation for something that does not exist. We could not save Paz from the inevitable death and our character suffers from it. Paz scenes were also great character development tool in the game.

They left it open to interpretation, but Snake probably imagines her to cope with the guilt of not being able to save her, and what we saw in GZ is what actually happened, not what we see in TPP.

Yeah obvious instances of Venom suffering from PTSD and cases of Phantom Pain over different areas of MB like this one, would have been interesting.
Yeah, I think Venom’s PTSD comes from not being able to get the second bomb out and felt guilty that he didn’t check for a second one. I love Paz’s last tape because I think that brought closure to that ordeal

You know how Konami can better their image? Release all the future DLC, not just free, but unannounced, and give it to us a “Updates” claiming to fix, stuff and thangs, and then you’ll see peopel discoverign new content, from Cutscenes to missions!
Those doors are only for FOB. What prooves this point is that there are actually two doors on the Medical Platform. The one where Paz is, is located above the one that you go in during FOB and said door is red. I haven’t seen two doors on any other platform so far. And that on the roof of the R&D Platform is also just for FOB :/ Sorry to crush your hopes though I still don’t understand why those doors appear on Motherbase in SP.

The most silent hill moment for me, I think of the proloque. Imo, this could make a good horror game without mainstream ghost and weird creature. You got a bunch of soldier,murdering helpless people at night while you hidin below the bed, those moment already makes you feel the fear like horror game

Yeah this scene is one of the best in the game. One of the best MGS scenes actually. I teared up tbh and I still do when I watch it. The only times I’ve ever teared up other than this in games is TLOU’s opening and mission 43 in MGSV.

If little things like this get censored I wonder if Kojima could actually make a game with any sort of taboo, it would probably be banned world wide despite not having any content worthy of a ban, though honestly Japan is REALLY REALLY strict on stuff, so no big surprise.

I understand how different cultures have different wants and levels of acceptance for gore and strong content, but it is pretty clear in the case of Japan the system does not accurately represent the culture, it is way to controlling and censors way to much unnecessarily, it is beyond stupid to actually censor the content in a game or anything, just label the content don’t change it, for to be honest if the countries laws are so tied assed about the whole thing, simply don’t let it be released don’t be an asshole and change the content to censor something when the people don’t want it censored, the culture doesn’t want it censored, only the law wants it censored. The only way TPP could have been the way it was meant to be, would only be possible with an AO Rating, and therefore PC Exclusive, since neither Play Station nor Xbox allow AO Game on their Consoles for some dumb reason.

You’re right in that aspect. It is really terrible that the AO rating is so narrow minded by everyone, to everyone AO = porn plus excessive insane gore, which is stupid, that’s not all the label covers, but honestly it is the rating system itself which is broken, funny part is the only people whom care about such a broken system is the corporations the players couldn’t care less about the rating system, and people like myself find it very irritating and with things like the AO rating can incredibly limit the ability to sell such a game. While a rating system is needed in some ways it should not limit or filter anything it should simply be a label but it isn’t in today’s industry what we have is a system in which to control and filter the content people put into games instead of a simple system to label said content in games, it would also help if it accurately labeled the games and ages, our system does not.

Well, I guess once I finish the Paz story I’ll have to watch the uncensored version.
Now that Spoilers are allowed, here is my Take on the Story, more specifically its message, and what Hideo means by “Phantom Pain”, so let’s break it down in elements:
1. The Phantom Pain: The way is told in MGSV is a metaphor for Depression, more specifically for the feeling of loosing something and/or someone close to you, (MSF = Soemthing, Paz, Chico, & MSF Solders = someone) for the feeling that they are still there, feeling that you still have your Job, all tough you were fired, feeling as your girlfriend/boyfrend/mother/father/brother/sister/friend is still there with you, all tough he has left you/died/gone far away from you, feeling that you still have your franchise (Metal Gear & ZOE Hideo) but you don’t anymore
2. Foreign bodies close to Heart and Brain
A. The ones removed during the 9 years Comma: This is basically saying that trying to heall depression all at once would break you up from inside, would destroy your health (the foreign Bodies close to the heart) and Mentaly, emotional, (The Sharpnell from Snake’s Brain) make you Snap, and therefore it takes time for de depression to stop (for the Foreign Bodies to be rejected by the subject, like the “Horn”) and even more time to heal the woonds left by he depression, time before you re-become confident on yourself, and eventually happy.
B: The ones still impossible to Remove: The depressions that you can never EVER get over, that you either chose or have to live with for the rest of your life, that at first you ignore, saying that “everything is fine until the point that which it starts consuming you from the inside, which does “more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured.” that the only way to keep it under control is to feed it from time to time, to finally accept it as part of you, to “Deal with it”, to learn from it, to look at it, not as a Regret, but as a life lfe leason, and no Movie tells this aspect of TPP better than 1 of Hideo’s Favorite Movies of 2014, “The Babadook”

3.Language: Basically how we are all united by a common language, English, and how some fo us have lost our nation, how we think and talk different when we speak this language, and how we shoudl do soemthing about it, how we should not forget “our native tongue”

I always viewed the game as an exploration of pain, but far beyond the conventional explanation of trauma or loss. It encompasses loss, trauma, guilt, depression and retaliation with those motif’s explored physically, emotional, psychology and ideologically, explored through both the cinema and the writing. I think Kojima was trying to go the extra step and was trying to use the gameplay and narrative for a canvas for providing an ideological exploration of pain through memes (language: human culture and history is not stored genetically, it’s stored memetically through language – words).

Nice analysis, this is why I love MGS, it gets everybody going nuts over the details 🙂 though most of the time I personally don’t agree. TPP is clearly unfinished none intentionally, and for me a bad story is a bad story, I couldn’t care less if it’s message is about being a bad story, fact for me is it’s a bad story and therefore I don’t care about it’s themes of messages or thoughts, or anything regarding it in general, for me a bad story gets junked and forgotten, and such I have done with TPP, I will not analysis the story or themes any further as it isn’t worth my time or thought to be wasted as I have hit the point where it is bad and I no longer care. A story has to draw people in and be good and immersive in order to tell any message, TPP does none of this, it uses the rest of the franchise to supposedly create the feeling of loss and incompleteness, to me that is simply abusing people whom have been playing the franchise for a long time. What if TPP is your first MGS? to you it will be simply crap, you have no attachment to the characters or long running series or lore, and as such you won’t be missing anything, you won’t feel anything, to you it will simply be bad and unfinished. It is not hard to write a story about incompleteness without it itself being incomplete, for example we could have spent the whole game going for revenge but never actually get any, and as such we would be left incomplete and empty, the story would be complete and tell us what it wants to but our revenge, our goal is left unfinished and thus explore the nature of revenge more, show us how it turns us into demons and give us no resolution. But in TPP it is not written in a way to be incomplete, the theory that TPP was meant to convey such an idea is purely based off of the fact the game is incomplete, as such this theory would not exist if the game was complete, if this was truly intended in anyway for the game there would be a lot more of this concept in the game, but there isn’t.
I have said I’m done analyzing the game but I still end up thinking about it a lot and talking about it because of here, lol, I just care nothing for the story anymore, I’m not feeling any loss for the story or my gameplay, I’m simply disappointed that Kojima didn’t get to finish his whole game whether it would have been good or bad in my eyes.
If you think about TPP Story, about its substats, is not Meatl Gear, TPP is more or less Silent Hill!
never imagined that Japan would censor gore in a game. I mean, some of the most disturbing stuff I’ve seen in my life it’s mostly from Japan.
Games are actually heavily censored in Japan. Gore and sex will pretty much automatically get a game a Cero Z rating, which restricts how it can be sold and advertised.
As a recent example, the Japanese version of Metal Gear Rising uses white blood instead of red, and changes all the cyborgs into robots to make it clear that you aren’t killing humans.

this is the most memorable part for me. That scene is really heartbreaking. I know it just a game but it really hurt your feeling, each time you shoot them especially seeing they try to salute you for the last time.
WTF, I never knew the game auto sets you up with an FOB regardless if you have PS Plus. So I just booted up the game and lost some materials and in order to retaliate or even set up defences I need to buy PS Plus. I guess I shouldn’t have skipped through the FOB tutorial stuff :/ Well I’m going to buy PS Plus anyway for MGO, so yeah. Pain for Pain.

@Nyxus:disqus I would like to talk about another glitch I’ve found and I think not much people have seen it yet. I’ll comment it here as always cause I know Robert and the others read us from time to time.
The problem is that some of Snake gameplay face animations doesn’t activate. For example, when Snake run for some time and then stops, he should pant like he did in GZ (even the sound effect is the same, but the animation does not trigger). Also, some commands don’t trigger the facial animation such as “spit it out”. I’m playing the Steam version.
