Kojima reveals full character render of Ludens, the mascot of his new studio
Kojima has released a high quality render of Ludens, the mascot of the new studio. He also provided some information on what this character represents.
“LUDENS, the icon of Kojima Productions. We’ll deliver THE NEW PLAY in THE NEW FUTURE with the cutting-edge equipment, technology, & the frontier spirit. The gear he’s wearing is the extra-vehicular activity(EVA) creative suit.”
An ‘extra-vehicular activity suit’ is a suit that allows astronauts to survive in outer space, outside of the planet’s atmosphere.
Update: Kojima made some additional comments on the character’s design:
“This was designed with the nostalgic elements that exists in the nature/the history. On the surface of the space suit, there’s a Turing shaped pattern, (the texture you often see in the Arthropod) and the yellow cam-like device idea was brought from the Turing machine.”

Guys, if you look at the character. If you zoom in, you can see that there is a dead person inside that suit or fully android-like body.
Something tells me that the planet earth is dead and there won’t be any humans at all. Maybe humanity is dead and these guys are searching for a new home where they can rebuild humanity.

That is such a Kojima plot – I would love him to make a game about the concept of death – in a physical, emotional, ideological and philosophical sense; combing action, stealth and horror.
In his tweet he also points out that he’s wearing a specific “EVA” suit. Implying other suits perhaps? Different terrains and environments use different suits?

Because they want to create a mascot. It’s possible that the character has something to do with their next game, but not confirmed as of now.
that kojipro used the FOX-logo as their own is a strong indicator, that ludens could be in the game in any kind of way.
I thought all the fan-art renders of the body were amazing but looking at the official one…..There’s no comparison to Shinkawa san. Better than I could have imagined.

Was it rendered in a game engine they are thinking of using – I just thought it was a render done by a 3rd party, not in-house. I hope the render was done by KojiPro as it would be the first glance at the graphical capabilities of their engine.
I doubt about it. Possibly… Edges are not that anti-aliased after all, but some parts look rough / detailed… I think it is safe to consider it is not real-time… YET… 😀
Yeah – it seems a bit too high poly for me to believe it’s real time. And the texture detail at some parts are insane.
They can add tons of polys for a static shot.. That’s why I am wondering about your question… But yet, even if it is simple communication, Koji-apart… This is looking like people worried about slightest details. Reminds me some dudes… ;D

I’m confused, is it Ludence or Ludens? I’m guessing they have the same pronunciation in Japanese, which lead to this confusion.
Yeah it’s unclear. Yesterday Kojima wrote Ludence and today he wrote Ludens.
I’m assuming it’s Ludens and he just corrected himself. Or somebody mistranslated a tweet(it happened before when he was at Konami)
His English tweets are still being written by the same person (his PA Ayako).
I think he is addressing us as Ludens (those who play) while Ludence is the character name. Ludence is a name version of the word Ludens anyway so same kind of thing.
I also think Ludence is metaphorical to the player and may feature facial customization again. The skull is probably the base model we all start off with before creating a face on top of it. But the skull looks to be projected on the helmet glass too for fear purposes (like modern day soldiers wearing skull masks).
Maybe a phonetic hint. He perhaps want to make sure we pronounce it the right way, as it sounds in latin.
Personally hope it’s “Ludens”. Ludence sounds like someone trying to say Lawrence and messing up lol

on the kojima productions website it says “from sapiens to ludens”, so i guess it’s ludens. either way, i think it’s a terrible name for this character.

Saw this, got exited for a clean slate for RE, but to be honest i dont know how they can pull a RE1 type of game in 2016, those tank controls would be unacceptable today. I wonder what and how they want to pull from this. Hoping for the best tough.

Have you guys played Revelations 1 and 2? Those games were pretty subdued compared to for example RE5 and 6. Maybe it will go more in that direction. Resident Evil mainly needs a good story, now it’s often hard to take seriously which doesn’t really help with a horror game.
I played the first one. I had some mixed feelings of it.
Rev 2 had the better story, I think Rev 1 had the better horror. But both are in the better direction.
Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil are my childhood games 🙂

I think I am the one person on the planet who actually liked RE6 a lot…
I liked some parts of it and was cool to see Chris and Leon together in a game. But it wasn’t scary and it’s what I’ve known RE for since childhood. Ok well 5 wasn’t either, but it had Wesker which is why it’s one of my favorite games :).
I see why people don’t like it, my first RE was RE5 and 6 followed after, so I went in to it expecting an action adventure game.
Not bad at all.
Glad to see Kojima breaking free from the usual MGS aesthetic and unleashing Shinkawa’s imagination at full force with bizarre (yet familiar design language) creatures, the best part of it that this time, kojima’s creation will actually belong to him, as sad as it was to see Metal Gear burn to the ground (in all senses) that IP always belonged to konami (legally =( )

When I look at it the first thing that comes to mind is a dead space like game. Survival horror in space with a futuristic deal or even a Gundam space action game.
To me it looks like it will be haven a SF Heroic “Interstellar” tone, exploring planets, and showing how much we people have evolved!
