Mads Mikkelsen on Death Stranding: I’ve never seen anything like this, it’s going to be ballistic

In an interview with Total Film, Mads Mikkelsen talked about Death Stranding and what it has been like creating the game with Kojima. Everything is done using mo-cap, or rather, performance capture, to capture the actor’s movements and facial features which are then used in the game.

“It’s been a little surreal, because obviously there’s nothing. We do everything. It’s mo-cap.” Mikkelsen said. “But the storyboard is so immaculate. He [Kojima] tries to explain it again and again and again, and I thought I had it, but then this happens and I’ve lost it again. It’s too complicated. It’s too crazy. It’s too beautiful. It felt a bit like being in drama school: “Just jump in and improvising this scene. This is what happens. Don’t question it.”

However, even though he does not have the full picture yet, Mikkelsen does feel like the game is going to be something special. “It’s wonderful, and I can tell from the little things I’ve seen – some things, it’s not done yet – but I’ve never seen anything like this.” he said. “And he’s not happy with it yet! It’s going to be ballistic.”

One of the challenges of the capture process is the fact that the actors are strapped with cameras, limiting their movements. “That was weird. It was everything we’re not supposed to do, right?” Mikkelsen explained. “If you interact with people, if you see someone, you hug him. And then all of a sudden, you have a camera here, he has a camera, and we go bang bang. And they keep saying, “It’s OK, you can go like this and hug. I have to accept that they (the cameras) will add to it – as long as we give as much emotion to it as we can, they will add to it. But it’s tough for us (actors) to accept. We’re basically greedy people. We wear tracksuits and run around. It’s fun.”

In an interview earlier this year, Norman Reedus, who plays the game’s protagonist Sam, stated that the game will have ‘elements of social media’. In this interview Mikkelsen makes a similar comment. “The whole concept of playing the game, as I understand, needs collaboration from different people from different parts of the world, which is also another level of fantastic-ness,” the actor said.

However, those who fear this is going to be a game that requires multiplayer don’t have to be alarmed, as Kojima Productions has stated earlier that the whole game can be played solo.

We will see more of Death Stranding next month, during the PlayStation E3 Showcase on June 11th.
