Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain rated by the Australian classification board: high impact themes and violence
The Australian classification board has given Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain an R (restricted) rating, meaning you have to be 18+. As can be seen in the table below, it as been rated ‘high impact’ on its themes and violence, ‘moderate impact’ on sex and language, and ‘mild impact’ on nudity. To compare this with the ratings for Ground Zeroes: that game received only a MA 15+ classification, and themes and violence were rated ‘strong impact’, one gradation lower than for TPP. It got the same rating for language, but wasn’t rated for nudity and sex. All in all, it seems like The Phantom Pain will go even further in terms of shocking contents than Ground Zeroes did.
It’s not all too surprising given what we know about the game’s dark tone and what several people (including Kojima) have said about its themes. Looks like this wasn’t an exaggeration, with the game getting the highest possible impact rating for themes and violence.

The production company line that reads “NOT SHOWN” is disturbing.
Oh my goodness you’re right :S
Probably because Konami are a bunch of idiots, thinking that they’ll make more money if no studio in their employ are allowed to have a name or any kind of identity :/
Bosse??
lets hope Australia doesn’t have yet another GTAV situation -_-
No drugs confirmed ^^
what about the injection Ocelot gives Huey in the Red Band trailer? 😉
I’m pretty sure there is some kind of drug in it XD
Also forgetting the hospital scene.
Nothing like a little Diagoxin (sp?) to get you back on your feet.
I will believe all the hype if there is a rash of teenage Diagoxin addicts after TPP comes out. LOL!
Sodium Pentothal,Digoxin-B,probably a many other things.
And the “medicinal herb” cigar. *Ahem*
I bet Quite is held responsible for all the “mild nudity” Lol
Heh, most likely! 😀
OH THANK GOD IT’S NOT BANNED
I was so worried I wouldn’t be able to play because Kojima included those taboos and our stupid as hell classification board would ban it. This is an excellent day!
A year on and I’m still somewhat amazed that Ground Zeroes managed to sneak past the OFLC completely unscathed (With only an MA, as well!). Pretty surprising, given how notoriously finicky they are.
A quick search of the Australian Classification site tells me all the other MGS games were rated M or MA15+. So Phantom Pain is getting a higher rating there than any other MGS game. Interesting…
Also, it received higher marks in themes and violence than Ground Zeroes. So I guess we can expect something even more gruesome than the surgery.
Yeah, that’s interesting, it has been added to the post. 🙂
Surprised it wasn’t denied classification, knowing Australia.
Lol, no drugs? I want my diazepan scandal all over news again like in MGS1. >.<
That was hilarious and loling years ago here in Spain, i don't know if the same happened in your countries, but there were news all over TV against MGS1 because "it promoted to young people to take drugs", due the diazepan. LMAO.
Whew, I’m from Australia. I was afraid that they will ban the game here.
The only concern I have is that the Australian boards might remove or censor some parts of the cut scenes for this game due to it being too sexual or graphic. I remember they did this to Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Saint Rows, South Park: Stick of Truth, etc..
Lets hope it don’t happen, censoring stuff like that is so stupid. It’s up to people if buy it or not, no reason to censor games as most know what kind of game they’re getting. I mean Mortal Kombat X is one of the bloodiest games ever and when you buy it, I’m sure you all know heads are gonna fly etc. It was still banned in some countries, when some dumbasses think it’s not okey to play it.
I don’t understand though, that why the hell did they remove/censor cut scenes of GTA:SA or South Park for example.
Gatsu, has finland ever censored or banned game stuff? I don’t remember, my patients alzheimer is effecting on me lol
No they haven’t
Haven’t happened in Finland for as far I can remember, but I would be quite angry if my precious TPP would be censored or banned :)…
For South Park and Saint Rows 4, they had alien anal probe scenes (I think). So they removed it completely! GTA: SA had nudity, so they censored it!
Australia thinks that once I play the game, I will go and start shooting people up for no reason (even though we have anti-gun laws here as well). Precisely and plus you need ID to get R18+ games anyway. But you can by-pass that by getting your parents to buy it (hence it will be the parent’s fault for buying them the game if they are underage).
Blu-rays are region free, so import a copy from North America! Problem solved!
Yeah, good idea! Thanks for that.
But that is if they do censor it.
Damn it… right! Thanks for the reminder. I hope it’s not censored in France though 😮
Europe also has the same region as Australia (PAL).
high impact themes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WTF!
now i understand why kojima mixed humor ,maybe dark comedy and dark themes.i thought the humor would save us but its not the case now.looks like im gonna cry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i thought kojimas humor or dark humor will tone down the theme but now it seems impossible.
Well great thing is will not be banned in Australia, as I’ve heard some games have been in the past. So many games these days got violence and nudity etc, so banning it wouldn’t make any sense imo.
But highest rating makes me wonder about how crazy and bloody stuff we will see in TPP … Like in Nuclear trailer Big Boss walking covered in blood, losing limbs, Hospital massacre etc… Must be lots of more we haven’t seen, damn I love how dark this game story is gonna be ;).
I can imagine how quick it may be for it to come off of the shelves in Australia after release. It pretty much matters how many under-aged are getting copies. At least, that’s pretty much how it was for GTA.
*rubs hands together* This is gonna be good! Nyeeeeehehehehehehe…
Exactly what my response was going to be, lol.
OH BOY
nudity and sex, with extreme violence….. uh oh
Those 3 together sounds pretty nasty, lol.
The horror fan in me is salivating
So will this mean that the game will be AO over here in North America?
Not sure, Ground Zeroes was rated Mature by ESRB, but judging from this Australian rating this game goes even further.
Oh yea. This game gonna be IMPACTING. http://i551.photobucket.com/albums/ii452/bluecynder/Animated%20GIFS/WaterBalloon_slowmo.gif
Can’t wait 🙂
Hurr durr australiur, rate thing illegal and make parents decisions for therm werr smert…
