Kojima Productions and Konami respond to discussion about Ground Zeroes length

Ever since Game Informer reported beating Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes’ main mission in two hours, the news spread quickly. This has elicited several comments by employees of Kojima Productions and by Konami itself.

Hideo Kojima himself responded on Twitter with the following text:

MGSV Ground Zeroes includes the main mission alongside 5 Side Ops. All missions include elements such as “Trial Records,” where players can compete against each other online. This is not a linear game like the past. GZ offers freedom of approach & play style, which we hope players will enjoy over & over without boring. I believe people will be satisfied with the “Play Time’ of GZ and will not stress the “Clear Time,” which is a standard for linear games.

He confirms the number of side missions (five), and makes a distinction between ‘play time’ and ‘clear time’. The two hours may be the clear time, but is not meant to represent the play time you can get out of the game.

Game Informer posted an update on their website to go into a little more detail. They played the game for four hours, beating the main story twice (the second time they knew where to go and skipped cutscenes) and beating three side missions. They do not know exactly how long the full package will be.

Kojima Productions senior producer Ken-ichiro Imaizumi seems confident though, writing on Twitter:

Can’t wait to prove the depth and quality of MGSVGZ, the week of March 18th.

Kojima Productions designer Jordan Amaro also commented on the issue, as reported by Gamespot. These are his words:

Are ‘Journey’ and ‘Dear Esther’ long? [Voltaire’s 18th-century writing Candide] is like a hundred pages at most. Yet they are masterpieces of video game and literature. This smearing will not stain and affect what we’re aiming to achieve with MGS, the game industry in Japan, or video games as a whole.”

“I want people to celebrate the new MGS like we used to. I’m not dismissing their concerns. But this has been trumped-up.

Lastly, Konami has released this statement:

METAL GEAR SOLID V: GROUND ZEROES features a non-linear, open world environment that allows players to choose how to approach each mission. Players can use a variety of tactics, from a run and gun action style to true stealth-ops, to accomplish any one single mission, true to the METAL GEAR SOLID series. With freedom to choose multiple paths, by foot or by vehicle, to dynamic enemy engagement, players are sure to find a deep gameplay experience across a central story mode as well as numerous side-ops missions.

Also, METAL GEAR SOLID V: GROUND ZEROES offers a number of additional achievements and unlockable platform-exclusive content for considerable replay value in the true cinematic style and ground-breaking graphics quality that has become the hallmark of Kojima Productions.

Similar to a television series, GROUND ZEROES serves as the first act that will bridge the gap between METAL GEAR SOLID PEACEWALKER, serving as the prologue to the highly anticipated METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN, the second part of the METAL GEAR SOLID V Experience.

KONAMI expresses its confidence that METAL GEAR SOLID V: GROUND ZEROES represents an overall excellent experience with its expansive gameplay, replay value, as well as its compelling and deep storyline.

When he says Trial Records, does he mean Leaderboards?

    • Nyxus

      I think so.

    • Batzi

Time Trial is the mode. Trial Records is the Leaderboard..

The fact he says you can compete online with other people should be a give away that a leaderboard is present in the game which is something I was not expecting and now knowing that I am even more excited!

    http://www.vg247.com/2014/02/06/metal-gear-solid-5-the-phantom-pain-may-not-release-until-fy1516/

    FY2015 or 2016?

Jesus man…. 2016 is not a really good idea for this game.

    • Janeo

No way it won’t be 2016 if it was they would have just developed it for next gen systems only it would have to be at the end of 2015 at the latest. I’m still holding out a tiny bit of hope we will get it at the end of this year but I think we will get around April 2015

      • Golgari

Yeah. I think for March or April relase for 2015.

        • Janeo

I don’t know what the analyst is talking about if the game isn’t ready until 2016 they wouldn’t be releasing ground zeroes now and we wouldn’t be this much information about phantom pain

  • Bob Faget

Calling Dear Esther a masterpiece of video games really doesn’t work in your favor.

  • César H. Sandoval

The issue it’s the price, not the time.

it should be 20$ flat in all versions, but even if this is MGS, asking 40$ is too much for a prologue.

    • Cartmangus

$15 digital launch and I don’t think anyone would’ve complained about GZ.Then offer physical versions for $20. Even though I see the value past a short main campaign, I mean the Tanker can be beat in 10 minutes but I probably have 200 hours total on it alone, I must say I understand people not being thrilled with the pricing of the next gen versions for this given the length of it

      • Nyxus

But I’d like to say I’m very glad we have been given the option to buy a physical version. I really don’t mind paying 10 euro more for it, at least I have the choice to do so, and for those who don’t care and don’t mind buying a digital copy, there is the option as well.

      • ObsessedGeorge

GZ is only going to be apreciated by the MGS fans. Not the random gamers that haven’t played the previous installments. If anyone has played MGS2’s Tanker, then they will not have a problem with GZ length. The Tanker chapter had me playing it longer than the total hours spent in Plant, and that alone says that GZ will suck me right in.

  • Makeshiftnh

I know they’re gonna have their hands full with TPP, but they should reeeally consider working on some DLC. MGS is my favorite series and I’m getting it either way, but IMO a grand total of 6 missions is gonna feel like a ripoff. There’s only so much replay value you can get out of that.

  • Cartmangus

I enjoyed the Tanker demo over & over without boring.

  • Josue Quintana

    PLZ plz plz……
Dont forget this is METAL GEAR
and METAL GEAR has METAL GEAR Fight
i know that does not seem real but the way the game hast turn…..

PS: and that delay thing is to force people buying

  • PrinceHeir

so any thing about the save feature?

will the last gen consoles also have Phantom Pain or just nextgen??

    • Nyxus

As far as I know The Phantom Pain is still planned for all four consoles.
