High quality versions of Metal Gear art being made available by Konami

Good news for Metal Gear fans! Over the last couple of weeks, Konami has started releasing high quality versions of Yoji Shinkawa artworks on Reddit. Reddit user KonamiUSSocial (community manager Benjamin Kinney) wrote:

Following up on the community’s request to put out some higher quality versions of Shinkawa-san’s work though the years. These will be .png at 150 DPI. I will be spreading them out, I have a few folders worth we are sorting through.

Note: the images below are resized and compressed. To get your hands on the full quality version, simply click the images you want and it’ll take you to Konami’s upload on Reddit.

        I’m trying for a week (no exageration) to find a file on the internet, and the >only< place i found it is on a russian forum, but as far as i can tell, i have to be registered to be able to download it. The registration is smooth sailing up till the robot "question" x_x

            Well, this is the tricky part. I am trying to find the Mame2014 core for an android os emulator named Retroarch. It’s named something like “mame2014_libretro_android.so”. If you are familiar with Windows M.A.M.E emulator, you might know what i mean. So, this 2014 version was online around the first half of 2015, but since then it was updated to the latest (2016) version which i don’t need (i have it but it is twice as slow).
            I asked in numerous places, including the Retroarch developers, but all of them seem to have kept only the updated version (and a couple of others, 2003 and 2010, which i have).
            2014 is the version that has the compatibility and (hopefuly) speed i need. Becoming a registered user on that forum would be excellent in my endeavor 😀

            Some are stating that chmoding the core to 777 may let retroarch read it.

            Yeah, i actually posted on that thread a while back. Sadly that version of the core is 1.incompatible with my stable version of the Retroarch/os firmware and 2. Is an update of the actual version i am looking for (the one in the russian forum) and it is unplayable on pretty much anything out there atm.

            So..i sill need a russian, but …”no russians” it seems 😉

            Hey buddy no worries I like tech issues and emus, I am just sorry you are still stuck.
            Ha I see, you may have tried as well to investigate why recent versions are so slow ?
            Have you tried as well to watch adb’s output and possibly check if you could spot related warnings or error messages, while executing the latest mame ?

            I have to go, but will try to check if I can find some further info.
            In the mean time, try to post your exact HW and SW setup specs.
            I am sure there must be a way to either build from source or find a built version of the lib you are after.

            Well, the hardware is a rooted Samsung Galaxy S4 (quad version) on a 4.3 JB (most stable/fast S4 rom in my experience), which runs everything pretty well for it’s class (full speed for most arcade hardware around the 2k era).
            This new revisions of the core however, are slow because sometimes after the 0.140 – 0.150 Mame versions, they really stopped adding any kind of performance hacks, so…brute force is the only way to handle them.
            Building is an option, as it is how they are all made, but sadly it is waaay out of my skill set.

            Not saying it is finger in the nose neither but it may be a lot more simple than you think. Try to provide me with the exact revision you need and I’ll try to build it for you.
            After browsing MAME archives, I see many 2014 revisions but not sure now since you said your issue appeared between 0140 and 0150. Fact is that 0139 is from 2010.
            Let me know, since I have the tools ready here I am giving a shot at whether I can build the 0153 which is the first published in 2014.
            Will post you the procedure if I am successful.

            The actual revision i’m looking for, is the first one that supports the Cave CV1k drivers. To my knowledge, 0.153 is indeed the first one that has them fully enabled. So i’d say i’m 99% sure that’s the one.

            Hey buddy, relax,I love playing with those. I think I grabbed, a mame libretro 0153 source revision.
            Tried to build it with MSYS2 / MinGW64, but probably missing a couple of clues. Will try with Cygwin too. MSYS is usually cool, but if I can not build with Cygwin, at least, I found a 0153 source depot. Worth few other shots with MSYS, since libretro advise it but Cygwin is another handy track for targeting your proper android sdk-18 (4.3 JB) along with according ndk compilers.
            Keep you tuned.

            Won’t promise anything but it should build. At least you have the sources in worst case. Will try to dump you the corresponding binary. At worst if I can’t, maybe the git owner can post you a *.so. Would be cool to be able to build it ourselves… Just tested retro and thanks to you and it looks awesome ! Love this XMB like menu.. ;D

            Could not try much lately (sorry dude), but will keep you posted.
            If it works, I’ll build as well de-facto 0152 & 0151 so you can make sure what exactly happened.
            Again, not promising anything but at least if the *.so links, I’ll drop you a line.

            This is very good news. Started to build the whole libretro here (xD) and guess what, most cores are perfectly building but mame’s ones… 🙁 Wanted to see if at least I could build 0159, replace the code base with 0153’s and try to rebuild, but yet the compiler fails for different reasons on 0159. After digging a bit, most are indicating to build with MinGW but it dumps me a whole set of different errors (probably some paths are not correctly set).

            So I am glad you could find a solution. Just keep me tuned in case 0151 is finally not suitable, and I’ll try to play again with this toolchain (I leave it as is on my PC anyways).

            Great stuff man! Yeah, apparently Mame was always tricky to build for android. Headaches all around ^_^
            I’ll test the core on my sister’s Note 3 as well, next week when she comes home. If it’s close to full speed, maybe the .153 build it’s worth a try. I’ll keep you tunned.

    Is mgsv going to be “compatible” with ps4 pro? Maybe it could look as the pc version.

    • So far Konami has not said anything about a Pro patch, so it doesn’t look like it’ll support it (also tried asking Peeler directly via Twitter but to no avail). Kind of strange as you’d expect this game to support it.

        Technically speaking, to have MGSV support higher res on pro would be a heavier move for Konami than having a HDR patch for regular PS4 (I think). Although as any big group, if Survive is to support 4K on pro, why not patch MGSV as well ? I hope they will consider all options instead of just readying all for only 1080p and without HDR.

          MGSV in 4K will look worse than a 1080p version. If the game is not designed around 4K, it’s not the same. Not sure that Konami wants to spend some additional money for 4K visual content

            I have to respectfully disagree. It will look more sharp, so I agree the surface will look less tessellated, however the edges will still look thinner so the overall impression will still benefit some added value. Better something sharper than nothing.
            Remember HD-Cols, the meshes are not that obviously more heavy but it is still fun to see sharp surfaces.

            Sharper? Yeah, probably a bit if it is not upscaled. I remember when Bioware showed Mass Effect: Andromeda for the first time. You could look it 4K at youtube and they really made some special effects for 4K. Can’t actually describe it, but there is indeed some difference in a good way. I have 4K monitor and I played Battlefield 1 in 4K and it actually looks worse than a 1080p version. The game needs to be developed in that resolution. It’s a huge step up. Almost at the level of SD-HD era of games.

            You are right, if a 4K port just limits itself to a post-rendering up-scale, then all fall into unacceptable BS, and some studios have indeed this annoying tendency.
            I think new GPUs are starting to get a bit more ready for truly less resolution-dependent rendering techniques with smarter usage of the geometry pipeline, but yeah, nothing will beat customization for few more years.

            Also there are some other factors such as the artistic quality of the shapes. Some games benefits of higher modeling quality (like KP’s) for their meshes so simply changing the output resolution may work better for them than others. But sharpness is not free of other small satellite problems such as higher aliasing which may have a substantial cost to adjust at the end.

          They could probably go for full 4K if they drop the framerate to 30fps. Otherwise, they’d need to upscale.

          At the very least, releasing an HDR patch would be nice. Knowing Konami, though, they’d probably try and make you pay for it.

            Are you sure ? PS4 Pro have a another full PS4 GPU next to normal mode. I guess MGSV @30 fps would be something too, like on PC’s because I guess only rare ones can sustain 60.

            We’ll see, but would look cheesy, other studios are patching to HDR on regular PS4s for free. But yeah, Konami… If they really want to stay in AAA biz they have to follow the rules..

      HK was locked out from his MGSV award a year ago, and Mark Hamill was supposed to give him. All was properly staged, but Konami surprised us in the worst manner. Geoff had the very guts to to let us all know the reason (impressive). I sense a real balance in the force for this TGA.. 😀

          Also why is Warner Bros obsessed with extended cuts?
          Lotr and potter had good extended cuts as well as hobbit’s r-rated cut but for DC, they’re just sending awful theatrical cuts and then using the original cut as DLC or a game of the year type crap

            Early trailers always have a lot left to fine-tune, no worries.

            Man of Steel was pretty fair though..

            For Lotr, the whole prod was intended to be that long and contiguous. In fact the real movies in such cases are the extended versions, proposing often over an hour more sometimes.
            Other than that, most extended cuts are just full versions of movies that may have been slightly truncated (~10-20 mns) here and there, targeting a larger casual / less hard-core audience in theaters for easier box-office competition.

            In both cases, it really depends on the initial script length.
            Long scripts re-insure me… For instance, they rarely go over 150 mns if the movie is nuts (can happen tho).
