Metal Gear Solid Delta wants to introduce the series to a new generation of gamers

The final issue of Play magazine (nr 46) hit store shelves last month, and it featured Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater on the cover. The magazine went hands-on with the game and also published an interview with series producer Noriaki Okamura. Gamesradar has reported on some of the details of this interview.

It’s easy to forget it’s been quite a while since a new Metal Gear game released. The last entry in the series, The Phantom Pain, is now over nine years old, and since then all we’ve seen of the series is the (rather unsuccessful) spin-off Metal Gear Survive and the recent re-release in the form of the Master Collection. Because of this, the series is probably not as well known with a new generation of gamers as it was during its heyday. Okamura recognizes this fact, saying: “One of the things that really sparked us to do the remake in general is because we realised that a lot of the newer, younger generation of gamers aren’t familiar with the Metal Gear series anymore”. So in that sense, the remake isn’t just to give old fans a chance to play the game again, but also to reintroduce it to a new generation of gamers: “It was basically our mission, our duty, to kind of continue making sure that the series lives on for future generations. After all, we leave behind much more than just DNA, as Solid Snake would say – but again, who is Solid Snake?” This is also the reason the number in the title was replaced by the Delta symbol. MGS3 was chosen as the starting point because it’s chronologically the first part of the story.

Probably for the same reason, the team wants to strike a balance between nostalgia and more modern standards, or as Okamura describes it: “Our whole goal when we’re making this remake is to make sure that it still feels like the game that you played 20 years ago, but without making it feel like an old game”. This is also why the game features both the old control scheme as existing fans know it, and a new more modernized control system. “We didn’t want to make any unnecessary changes that would take people out of that experience. But at the same time, we need to make sure that when people play the game, it doesn’t feel old, like they’re playing an old game.” It is clear that with this remake the team aims to please both newcomers and existing fans with nostalgia for this all-time classic.
