Close Up: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Collector’s Edition
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will officially release on September 1st, 2015. There are several versions available, such as the Day One Edition, the regular edition and the Collector’s Edition. In Japan there’s also a Premium Package that includes a full scale bionic arm replica. In the other regions, the arm included in the Collector’s Edition is only half size.
The Collector’s Edition is only available for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, though here in the Benelux it seems like the Xbox One version got cancelled altogether, in the last minute. Either way, in this article we’ll look at the PlayStation 4 PAL (Dutch) version of the Collector’s Edition, which is slightly different from the North American version in some regards.
First of all, let’s take a look at the box itself. It’s a large rectangular container with a fake leather surface (which is actually just a print). One thing that’s a bit annoying is that when you remove the ‘outer peel’ (as Skull Face would put it) it leaves some mark on the surface of the box because it’s glued to it.
On the front it has been decorated with a Diamond Dogs logo. This emblem is made out of metal and has a magnetic surface on the back, so you can stick it on your fridge afterwards.
The box folds open in a ‘v’-shape (fitting for this title), after which the contents can be removed from the front.
The main extra with this edition is the half scale bionic arm replica that represent Big Boss’ arm in the game.
It’s actually quite light in terms of weight. Its fingers can be moved so you can make all kinds of gestures, and it can even hold objects. It looks quite good and authentic to the one in the game, with a nice attention to detail.
There’s also a steelbook with a nice artwork showing Snake and Miller on the front (from Ground Zeroes), and Snake and Ocelot on the back. This case contains a Blu-Ray with bonus material (interviews, trailers and a ‘Phantom Episode’).
On the inside is also an artwork showing an x-ray of Snake.
Further included in this case is a map of Afghanistan on one side, and Africa on the other (the two main areas in the game).
The set obviously includes the game itself, which looks identical to the regular edition, but with an ugly yellow text box on the front and the back that says it’s not available separately.
Lastly, there is some downloadable content: one code for the ‘Day One additional content’ and one for ‘Metal Gear Online additional content’: an emblem, four outfits for Snake, three cardboard boxes, weapons and armor, four MGO items and an XP boost.
All in all, a nice collector’s edition, with the main attraction of course being the arm. A lot of people may be disappointed the arm is only half the size of the one included in the Japanese Premium Package, but it does help keep the price down by more than 50%. It’s an original item to include in a CE, and fun to play around with due to its articulation. The items included are all well made and overall the price feels fair for this package.
So pretty… I wish I could of afforded one.

I originally had this pre-ordered but ended up cancelling it today and went with the day one edition instead. Over here in Ireland, it cost 140 euro in Gamestop, even though it costs 100 in most other countries. Just felt it was a bit too much to be paying, considering the small amount of content included.

Yup, and it’s annoying as hell, because where I live, Gamestop can charge whatever they like, since there’s literally no other Game stores here in Ireland, so there’s no competition. Think I’ll get that Phantom Pain Special Edition strategy guide with the money I saved, since that has an artbook included 🙂

For the collector’s edition? Unfortunately, it isn’t available on amazon for Ireland and UK. For Ireland, it was Gamestop exclusive. For the strategy guide, I’ll be getting that on Amazon probably.

That’s bullshit. In this article we see DLC papers, and they try to say, that this is not a mistake, but deliberate decision? Like BB would say: “What a load of bullshit”. So they prefer instead of printing a limited number of papers to be flooded with rage and disappointment on the release date? This is so childishly stupid that I even nervously laugh. MGSV has the worst pre-launch waiting time of any game I remember waiting. And with MGO coming out in October I think it is not the last we’ve seen of Konami fuck-ups.

I really don’t see what the big deal is getting dlc download code vouchers via receipt or email. Its a practice I’ve seen on other titles before like when I preordered Final Fantasy XIII-2 from Gamestop. Sure it may not come on specially printed mgsv logo paper w/in the box itself but that shouldn’t matter as long as you get it, right?

Is there anyone here who used to or is still living in Russia? I ask because I know TPP as well as a number of other major western titles such as CODs MW2 and MW3 in which Russia is made out to be the enemy and COD players are forced to kill these Russian adversaries. I know this may be a sensitive issue for some but I just wanted to hear your point of view.
This has been nagging me for quite sometime. When I was younger it was just a game but as I got older I began to realize there are people who may strongly disagree with this game design and choice of story.
Btw I know you won’t have to kill majority opponents in TPP thanks to Kojima. I was primarily pointing to COD.

I’ve survived 6 days without watching any of the “official” Let’s Plays, but I can’t take it anymore. Does anybody who watched them have regrets? Maybe you can point me in the right direction and tell me which will be the best video to watch with the least spoilers.
I’ve managed to stay away from them gladly. I dunno how spoiler free any of them are.
I only watched mission 3 (A heroes way) and some of the separate side ops vids they did and mission 4 (CRW or something) all spoiler free, and it’s also kinda funny *da dum tss* to see Rob more relaxed, cracking jokes about the games logic and stuff and trying to hide his frustration at Greg’s utter incompetence with the game.
It maybe sound weird, but seeing someone else play the missions is spoiler to me lol ;D. I just wanna do it myself :C…
I kinda get what you mean, but there are so many different ways to complete each mission, I’ve seen 4 playthrough of the CRW (I think) mission and it seemed as each time someone was playing a different mission. Anyway different people have different spoiler tolerances I guess.
I stop watch some of the videos not because Greg is… well, not very good, it was because the night vision googles! It supposed you’re “selling” the game to the people and he keep using a thing that makes all the awesomeness of the game yellow and green
He gets better later on, he still sucks – I cringe whenever he tries to lure enemies to his location by getting spotted.

If you haven’t already, go see Dark Angel (Called “I Come in Peace” in some territories) and Showdown in Little Tokyo if you wanna see Dolph at his absolute best.
Army of One/Joshua Tree is also a very good pseudo-John Woo movie worth seeing if you’re into the late ’80s-early ’90s Hong Kong scene (Speaking of which, is anyone going to see Ringo Lam’s new movie later this year?). Dolph gets plenty of suitably shit lines of course, so you won’t be disappointed.
I’ve always liked the opening scene of the ’89 Punisher movie in that it kinda-sorta apes a period slasher movie, only replacing an insane killer/demon/monster/whatever murdering good looking teenagers with a marginally-less psychotic vigilante hunting mobsters.

i would say the best way is to wait for a non-commentary gameplay or someone that at least doesnt suck playing the game.
Right now there is a MASSIVE SPOILER from the opening hour on Youtube. I just saw the video in the list. Stay away from it. The actual video has the spoiler on it before you even press play.
No regrets watching it honestly. Maybe some minor spoilers in the Kaz rescue and MB intro, but that’s it. I’d say the Hero’s Way one is pretty safe if you don’t want to see anything new at all. Only problem is they’re getting shorter and shorter.

It’s perfectly fine on last gen. It’s playable. Just during the day time it’s very choppy. I’m playing all the missions at night and getting a solid 30FPS. Only thing now is that the soldiers have adapted to my tactics. You’ll find out what I mean when you play it.
So, the AI is no joke, indeed.
No joke is right. If discovered, the soldiers swarm in pretty fast and are deadly accurate. I do find it much easier at night though. The daytime is deadly, very hard to use stealth.
So if you go for tranq shots aimed at their body, it’ll no longer have an effect as well?
If you keep going at night later on you’re going to REALLY struggle 🙂

I’ve been wondering… Do enemies have like a “Hive Mind” in TPP (meaning, once a soldier spots you all enemies know exactly where you are even before they sound the alarm)? I ask you because in GZ they seem to know your exact location the moment someone spots you..

Thanks. The frame rates they show seem to be right. When I take a look at the videos i have, there are no noticeable dips in FPS so far and I’ve seen some fiery boss battles.
i just dont understand why the OP claimed yesterday that the game ran 20FPS with stutters lol when in the article clearly states that the game run in mid 20s (25-30 FPS)

I really hope Greg thinking the Story was not good, was just Greg loving PW Story too much.
I liked peace walkers story up until the 3rd act where I believe it went way too melodramatic for even Metal Gear standards – like when Snake called the president, and there were like seconds to the launch, and peace walker drowned itself and Huey was like “she was using her heart” or some cringefest like that, yet again one of my favourite Metal Gear moments ever was Snake’s dialogue with Amanda and then Chico – some of Hayter’s best voice work. I think (hope) TPP narrative due to we already knowing how it all ends will give Kojima more leeway to focus less on fan-service and create a more lower key, metaphoric surrealist piece that will leave things like BB’s morality up to interpretation and create as many questions as answers…
Make sure you check your list to be sure you dont get screwed over dlc

To be honest I will use mostly the physical map to plan my missions to immerse myself, to feel like in 1984 like a real Soldier.
Arkham is waaaaay smaller though, trust me. You can fly from top to bottom in Arkham in a couple of minutes where it would take you like 40mins + just in Afghanistan.
So Afghanistan is exactly as big as Far Cry’s 4 Kyrat. Niiice!

No, not size, but concept, The Open World only with enemies and no pedestrians, like Arkham, but with Large Maps with outposts and a lot of empty space, like Red Dead.

I got it wendesday and let me tell you this: they may played early for reviews and that but with weapons unlock and rushing thru story, they kill part of their fun, when you got it and explore it at your pace , have excitement of get an S rank just with your tranq gun ,replay a mission to got the side objective, see how mother base grow. trust me TPP is unique even to MG standars and not for the open world

Based on what Hideo said, the Filter was very demanding Graphics wise, which is why it will only be possible on PC for those with High End PC’s.
About a 1 hour after release there will prob be a mod 🙂
i cant comment whether or not if its only possible on high end PC-s(and keep in mind a lot of the game assets are still tied towards the last gen consoles) … he only stated the following(note the picture)

You have to keep in mind that when developers make some features for the game they have to answer two important questions:
1)How demanding on the budget that feature is?
2)How demanding that feature is on mid-high end systems,and is it even worth optimizing?
Trust me if it wasn’t doable on current gen systems it sure as hell isn’t worth the budget or time….”time is money” after all
That is why im 100% confident that modders will add the feature (for those who are able to run it) ASAP….
When I get the game on PC I will switch Snake’s model with Kojima’s and try to recreate the Elegia trailer, I wish there was a character model of the Konami CEO that I would replace with Skullface.

No, my retailer (Spanish GAME) is not on the list, so no email/DLC voucher for us in stores (actually, Spanish GAME wont even answer questions about this issue, im assuming they dont know jack about it, but still). If we dont get the DLCs inside the package, we have to contact Konami’s support, and im guessing they will take their sweet time. In fact, in the Facebook’s post, the links posted by Konami itself lead directly to support tickets for America and Asia, but not for Europe, the link for Europe just gets you to the general webpage, and the support ticket for the Spanish version of the web doesnt even work, it just redirects me to the front page, so if I dont get the vouchers, I will need to google Konami’s spanish support mail, mail them, and pray that its the real one they use, and then, that they actually deliver a good and quick customer service.
Gee, sorry if I sound salty, really, but I think its pathetic they commit such a dorky error “uhhh, we forgot to get the DLC vouchers inside the boxes, sorry about that”, for the CE, noneless, and they warn us so late, TPP is around the corner. I dont actually care that much for those DLC, but if they come with a packaged I payed for, you know, I want to own them and use them.

With the – Day One edition DLC – , we only got 1 camo, 1 weapon, 1 cardboard box. 1 dlc still missing that gave to us 4 camos, 4 weapons, 3 cardboard boxes and venom snake emblem, This dlc include the weapon, camo and cardboard box from the – Day One – dlc. So… if we got only the – Day One – we only get 1 camo, 1 weapon and 1 cardboard box… inside the CE of Xbox one, are 3 dlcs, Metal Gear Online DLC, Day One and Collector Edition.

The hurt keeps getting worse… I was just at my local superstore and thought I would check out the game section. There was an empty spot in the display that said mgsv tpp. So I asked the employee about it and they said they must have sold all the copies in the case so she would grab me a copy from the back. So I stood excited as all hell for ten minutes, only for her to return and tell me they sold out all the copies in the back too. I don’t know what’s worse, the fact they sold all of their copies early or the fact that if I had tried a day earlier I would have had one of those copies!!! So mad!

That’s exactly how I feel too. I actually have hundreds of games too. None of them sound fun compared to TPP.
I guess that’s because Mgs has always, always been so inspirational for all of us. I remember that when i was waiting for GTAV i was like:”Well, yeah, i want so bad this game”. When i got it, I played it for 2-3 months, but it left me absolutely nothing. i mean, the gameplay was insane, the open world beautiful, but it didn’t give me any emotion. Actually, searching for emotion in GTA is barely stupid, but what i’m trying to say is that we all care for MGS, its characters, its overall story. The saga is a part of me, it changed me so much, and being Big boss my favourite character of the whole franchise, just try to imagine what i’m feeling right now..
Ahhhhh I can’t take it anymore, i’m in love with this saga :D.

If it will be any consolation to you and if you didn’t know already — if you ordered with an Amazon Prime membership, go into a customer service chat and tell them you are displeased that your order is arriving late (might have to wait until it’s actually arrived late) and they usually will apologize and give you a free extra month of Prime for this. Hey guys, Im nearly two hours into the game. Does anyone know how to import the data from GZ? I havent found the option yet.

There is an option in GZ to upload your save, then you can download for TPP.
I already uploaded from GZ. Do you have to do it before starting a new game, perhaps? And what if Ive already started? Does that mean Ill have to start over again?
I feel like a dumb child, not figuring this out by myself… 😛

Please will someone reply to this post when they play MGSV. I want to know if the controls have been improved over GZ. Is the aiming a lot smoother? and how does the aiming compare to the pre GZ Metal Gear titles. This could be the deciding factor in buying it for me.

I’ve been having Ground Zeroes live streams just playing in the background through my PS4 for about a half hour. I exited out of the streaming app for a moment then went back and saw that TPP was now streaming — I even entered into it real briefly by accident (I saw no spoiling thumbnails).
I just thought it was funny, but not unpredictable, that Ground Zeroes was near the very top of the list in number of people streaming the game, to suddenly near the bottom as soon as Phantom Pain’s streaming was opened up.
1 hour left for me guys, I am going to replay GZ again for the millionth time. This is my goodbye. Thank you so much @Nyxus:disqus for fultoning me to your Mother base, and thank you my fellow comrades for making the greatest fanbase ever. I will be back with a mission report this weekend.

Yet in MGS4 he doesn’t have any scar, which what led me to delieve that in MGS4 the one who dies isn’t Big Boss, and that Big Boss actually ends up becoming the Cybirg Ninja from MGS1, due to losing more than his left arm!
I have nothing wrong with the idea of BB is Grey Fox it’s just the logic of some people (*cough*cough* pythonselkan), if it’s handled in a way that makes sense and isn’t stupid and creates loads of unnecessary plot holes, like BB’s return in MGS4, then I’m down with it.
EDIT: another thing that irks me about that theory is that if it turns out to be true the initial believers will all come out and say I told you so, but in reality it was just luck as all their evidence was baseless and made after the fact.

If you guys have slow internet and want to work on trading cards(if available at launch) while waiting for the download, you should use steam idle master. This will allow you to get trading card drops. Hopefully the cards won’t be too spoilery.

ok loaded up mgsv gz on xbox one (to upload my save) i couldn’t yet but that’s not the weird part, i got quick boots achievement ? it states “Started the game and viewed the title screen within the challenge period ” and there is another one for doing all missions on both difficulty’s during challenger period …so ya someone explain this cuz im finding nothing

I have a collector’s edition and day-1 edition…….. should I toss the collector’s in my closet and maybe it will be worth $10,000 MB Coins in a few years? Or just prop the arm up with the middle finger up like we all want to do?
My NA Collctors Edition is not like this. The plastic arm doesn’t look identical (the rustic black/red part), the dang thing does not open friendly (everything just falls out, and you have to jam it back in), and there’s no band around it with a magnet, just a cardboard Diamond Dogs logo. So either your country got this exclusively, or… I have no idea of another option there.
It looks like the PAL version is a bit different from the US version.
i got mine, and checking only the European versions came with the DD metal emblem, still love it

Guys mine did not came with the Magnetic DD emblem on the front, it was only a cardboard cutout glued to the textured box. My CE is from North America by the way, someone else got the same problem?
