Jim Piddock not voicing Zero in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain?
Jim Piddock, the voice actor for Major Zero in Metal Gear Solid 3 and Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops, called the possibility he will reprise his role in The Phantom Pain ‘unlikely’. The reason apparently is that Konami’s offer wasn’t satisfactory. This also indicates that Konami did in fact contact him for the role.
Last week Hideo Kojima posted some photos of a voice recording session with Banjo Ginga, the Japanese voice actor for Zero. It would of course be very disappointing if Piddock wouldn’t reprise his role for the English version because Konami wants to save money on the voice cast. Check out the tweets below:

I’m guessing hiring Keifer freaking Sutherland takes quite a piece of the Voice Acting budget, eh Konami?
He was cheaper than Hayter. Confirmed by Hayter in an interview.
Link to the interview, please?
I’m not gonna call you or Hayetr liars, if he confirmed it it must be true.
I still have a hard time seing how a famous Film and TV actor like Keifer may be cheaper than a writer/voice-actor like David, tho.
I have a nagging suspicion that Avi Arad had a hand in getting Mr. Sutherland being cast as Big Boss. Maybe as a way ingratiating himself with Kojima for the rights to the movie. He struck me as smug when Mr. Sutherland was announced as Big Boss. But who knows I could be way off base
Link or it didn’t happen
I have listened to that interview, and he never said that. He said that one theory he had (Hayter) was that he wasn´t hired because he costs the same as someone like Sutherland. And Kojima doesn´t make that kind of decisions… The true reason we all know it, Big Boss doesn´t talk to much so he preffer to hire a better actor for the mo-cap, plus Sutherland is a dick just like BBoss is supposed to be in TPP… Still preffer Hayter of course…
I prefer Hayter a thousand times over Sutherland. But there’s a chance that Kiefer will not be the voice of the real big boss , even if he is, his work on Ground zeroes was ok, and I actually like his voice, in the trailer of quiet I think he does better than Atkin Downes or Baker. But David Hayter always will be Solid Snake. I would be mad If kojima makes a remake for the original metal gear and changes the voice of solid snake. It would be freaking weird if in Phantom Pain or in a remake for the original metal gear Hayter as big boss talks to Hayter as solid snake.
Hayter will return to close off the Saga as Solid Snake in Zanzibarland. It is only right. Otherwise Keifer will be talking to himself in the voice overs lmao..
No he won’t. They’ll probably get Kiefer to voice SS and someone else to voice BB in the case of an MSX2 remake.
Ha! Kojima have always a perfect alternate, don’t worry!
Even if he finds someone else, this will not have the same impact as having the original voice actors would once Big Boss and Zero fnally get to fight face to face.
I don’t know, we won’t really get this nostalgia induced impact anyway, because it won’t be Hayter speaking
You’re actually 100% right, the emotional impact is already ruined for the American fans anyway.
There’s a chance that gamers outside beloved America feel the same way. Just a little one.
Well, If you mean outside the US, then yeah. I’m from Honduras – Central America and I cringe everytime they replace an original voice actor from these games, hell I still miss Liquid’s in MGS4.
Japan has it great, they’re getting all their classic seiyuus back, BB and Zero included.
Actually the Japanese VO for Liquid-Ocelot was supposed to be Ocelot’s actor as well, but he passed away in 2006, so they went with Liquid’s actor instead.
Kinda make sense since Liquid “supposedly” possessed Ocelot 😛
Well, to be fair Ocelot wasn’t possessed anymore by the time of MGS4, it was just part of his act to fool the Patriot AIs
You are damn right. Im from South America, and trust me, it was painful as it was for you when Kojima announced Sutherland for Big Boss. And now this shit…. There is no respect for old fans. At the end they know we are going to buy it anyway, so they save money on this kind of shit….
You should be either dense or extremely famous to open “the inner kitchen” like this and call an offer “insulting”. Plus, I doubt Konami would compromize on voice acting. I call it was made on purpose to hint that we will in fact see Zero, or just to troll us, but somehow I don’t believe the dude’s words.
he’s pretty famous actually
They already fired a known voice actor behind his back, I think another one saying that Konami doesn’t have a problem doing insulting things to them is something to really think about…
Same reason why Hayter is not in btw. Keifer was cheaper (confirmed by Hayter)
You know what? When it comes to Trolljima, and I see news like this I just don’t know what to think. He’s kinda like Ocelot to me, you never know what game is he really playing
Nah, we may play the RUSE game with Hayter all that you guys want, but when it comes to side-characters; I have no reason to doubt them.
i will miss that sassy British accent :_(…..
Having Zero finally assuming his place as the big MGS villain, and then be voiced be someone else will not be the same.
seriously though 🙁
*paz voice* Cipher watches all
C’mon Kojima don’t be cheap. Pay the man!
Meh at this point i honestly dont care I’m happy that how big mgsV is going to be and the cutscene are epic and even Troy baker who is in almost every single game said that is a honor to be in a game this big so honestly Jim Piddock can reject this job for all i care i dont hear him that often anyway, but good thing The Boss’ voice havent change
Miller and Huey are still there as well, I guess the only thing the fans have left is to count their loses and accept their wins.
japanese version is always the cannon one, at least this time they put eng subs on the jap games! (something that bugged me was the lack off eng subtitles on MGS4/HD COLL since the US version uses jap subtitles)
In this case the JP version is dubbed, and the English is the original. But it would be nice if they included both languages in all versions.
steam includes dual audio
Source?
steam page store, look at full list of supported languages
Just import the JPN version which has English subs.
problem solve, that’s what i’m doing anyway 😛
also steam version includes japanese audio, anyways I always get the japanese limited editions…
…………………….I’m not even going to start.
Still mad because you didn’t get any cake?
Cake? there was cake? who didn’t invite me!
…It was a lie
HaYters gonna HaYte
so, we’ll get another world famous actor now?
how about sean connery? bond as a zero? ahhaha… not
I wonder if Zero will even have that many lines if the offer is so “derisory”. What if he only had to do recordings for a day?
They better not. THEY BETTER NOT!
Isn’t zero 77 during the phantom pain?
He would be 75.
That sucks, but to be honest i haven’t heard him that much in other medium. Plus Zero is supposed to be darker here, i really doubt he’ll be using his jolly good British accent in this game anyways.
It would be funny if Paul Eiding voices Zero XD
Also this arrived today. YES finally got it! Gonna be an amazing way to end the year with two Mikami experiences 🙂

The Evil Within, FTW.
I really enjoyed The Evil Within. For me it’s another instant classic.
I’m glad there are other people enjoying The Evil Within.
Definitely my GOTY so far. Though i have feeling Bayonetta 2 and The Evil Within will go head to head by the end of the year for me XD
nah for me Dragon Age will take the prize …
damn you already have resident evil remaster 🙂 great collection olso first time i see that evil within cover mine is http://i11c.3djuegos.com/juegos/8758/zwei/fotos/ficha/zwei-2467118.jpg
Didn’t EU had a reversible cover too? I think you guys even have like a special edition which Nyxus posted a few articles back?
I kinda wante REmake on PS4, then without heard the western version will only have digital on all versions next year, only JPN and Asia is getting retail for PS3 version and is available right now. PS4 will probably be digital so i had to jump the gun and get it on PS3.
You should get the REmake though.
well no idea man at least not in my country i have the game but no different than other games no reversible cover just white paper 🙂 yeah agreed that retail version wish europe olso have retail version not for every game but games like these i mean mgs or resident evil am always buy retail version and of course definitely gonna buy remake probably you already know but revelations 2 release date olso announced http://www.playstationlifestyle.net/2014/12/02/resident-evil-revelations-2-release-dates-revealed-barry-burton-returns/
Yeah can’t wait for Revelations 2!
Barry is back!! He kinda look like Big Boss in the first few seconds of the trailer with that beard of his XD
LOOOOOOL SO TRUE 🙂 he is really look like big boss in the first few seconds of the trailer 🙂
I have been hoping to see Barry in a new RE game for quite some time :D, so I’m happy about this! Last time I maybe saw/played as him was in RE5 mercenary mode ;), where he kicked ass.
Playing as his daughter don’t interest me one bit. Claire I’m very happy to see after Code Veronica, but I wanna play with the badass-bearded Barry and not some teen who barely knows how to hold a gun. Just gimme Barry, my Magnum and I’ll blow some sh*t up >:D !
Yeah, the EU has a reversible cover as well, at least the one in the LE.
Advice: Get rid of the one that ruins the picture, the RE6, that is a sh*t Game, is not worth playing, the only good part is Leon part, which is like 3 or 4 hours, so definitely not worth buying the whole Game for that.
I agree about RE6…it was mostly a mess after Leon. Reminded me of some Michael Bay’s action movie with full of explosions lol.
yeah 🙁 and sad thing is before game released all trailers and characters like chris, leon, ada etc etc in the same game seems like a great concept especially for resident evil fans but just like you said game is a huge disappointment….
Gimme that Resident Evil Remaster…NOW >:C !
Did you get the ver. of RE6 that had those digital version of Re1-5?
Nah didn’t get that since i already have most of those games in digital form(which is that edition is with the voucher and all)
I did bought the RE6 Ultimate Edition(ALL DLCs) for $20 digital though.
I got a really great deal on it and the SE guide that came with the patches. Just sad there was no code v. Still waiting on a deal for that on PSN :/
Oh! Did you grab a copy of The Art of The Evil Within? I have a thing for collecting guide and art books for survival horror games and the cyber Monday amazon deal on books was too nice too pass up. Should get here today. So excited!
I think i’ll grab it next year along with the comic once the DLC comes out 🙂

I’m spending too much on other things right now XD
It sucks that Zero will have a different English voice actor but it’s not like they recast the main character in the game. Oh wait… they did.
Wtf, Kojima? First you change protagonist’s voice actor and now you can’t pay a role for antagonist original voice actor? We goddamn buy games and stuff, where the h**l all those moneys go? Fox engine? Let’s just change all actors, it would be okay too -.-
Too bad I’m not rich like Bruce Wayne, I would hire all the voice actors by myself, just ’cause I love this brilliant game. Yeah, thanks for ruining my morning again.
Don’t know if this is really up to Kojima.
Yeah, probably, probably not. Truth is that Piddock did not really say “Kojima” just “they”, but should Kojima have some kind influence over things?
It’s hard to tell what Kojima can and can not decide. He’s head of Kojima Productions, so he is leading the projects, but KP is still a subsidiary of Konami. But the truth is, I really don’t know what the extent to Kojima’s say in these kinds of things is.
Konami is the Publisher, so everything regarding the Budget depends on Konami.
At this point Kojima trusts in Del Toro for everything western.
To be fair though, the cast is pretty good.
Compare Robin Atkin Downes to Cam Clarke.
(It’s all gonna be good.)
I’m 99% sure is not Hideo, the Budget decisions are made by the Publishers, in this case Konami, so if you want to blame someone for not having David and Jim, is Konami, not Hideo, HELL, you could say that he got screwed by Konami with the Budget, that Konami Screwed us all over.
Damn, now is wish Kojima Productions was a Rockstar Games Development Studio, they would have gave Hideo all the money he needed for the development, including Casting.
Even after knowing that the real reason for not having David and Jim in TPP, you’re still blaming Hideo and not Konami the Publishers, just what the hell is wrong you?
Maybe Hayter can give his half paycheck like he did for Twin Sn…oh wait
Konami messing up with two major voice actors (Hayter and Piddock) ?? The two saying bad words about Konami ? Something is going on… isn’t that breaking the 4th wall with the concept of The Phantom Pain : the pain of a loss. Hayter has lost his character and suffers from this, and Piddock as lost money… 😀 I’m out before shitstorm.
Thumbs up if you want Donald Sutherland as voicing actor for Zero.
That would be interesting, but not the right choice.
sad news love his voice in the mgs3 but just like the PrinceHeir said : Zero is supposed to be darker here, i really doubt he’ll be using his jolly good British accent in this game anyways.
Sad to hear this, because I loved his voice :D. But I’m hopeful they will find someone who is equally as good with the right kind of voice for older Zero. Also I haven’t really heard much of his work besides MGS…I think. Not gonna rage about this news, but rather just wait and see how things will end up like. And who knows how much he wanted to get for the role, 1 million dollars?
One thing I say though, is that I hope MGSV will have the option to choose English or Japanese language in TPP. Or at least on PC version. Because I’ve never really played MGS with Japanese voices, but I would really like to experience that also :).
My choice for TPP Cipher would be Bryan Cranston, he would Kill It.
Ahh i just remembered something!
Konami(not sure if the US or as a whole) aren’t known for treating their VA’s right. Remember Silent Hill 2 and 3 where they paid the voice actors next to nothing? Even the voice of James Sunderland had to take whatever he want and sued at first, but since he loved his fans i think he gave up the suing and just let them used his motion capture(they used his facial and mocap for James character) for free i think?
So that’s where able to use the original voice in the HD collection. Shame it was’t the case for 3.
Don’t know why Konami fucked up a lot of their franchises(Silent Hill HD, ZOE HD, Bomber, Bloody Roar from Hudson Soft etc)
It’s a shame only the MGS Franchise get’s proper treatment from them. I kinda wish Kojima and his team made the franchise from a different publisher(Square would have been awesome)
Konami has nothing to do with the voice acting decisions of MGSV. Kojima is the VP of the entire company, it’s pretty obvious that this whole decision was on his hands (and Arad’s pockets).
Uh no.
Kojima had nothing to do with the English VA. He didn’t even cast Hayter nor monitored the English cast until Ground Zeroes.
Stop blaming Kojima. Arad only suggested Kiefer because of his acting skills and mo-cap which Kojima was looking for his new Fox Engine. He even said why bother hiring another actor if they could do voice and facial mocap on the same actor. All actors in the game are both mocap and voice so why should Snake be the only one?
Blame Konami US for handling the situation. Maybe if they contacted Hayter properly he would have not gotten the wrong idea and blown it up on twitter.
Me: “Konami has nothing to do with the voice acting decisions of MGSV”
You: “Uh no. Kojima had nothing to do with the English VA. He didn’t even cast Hayter nor monitored the English cast until Ground Zeroes.”
I’m getting the feeling that you can’t even read.
I did say Konami is responsible and NOT Kojima.
Your implying Kojima has something to do with this by saying “Konami has nothing to do with the voice acting decisions of MGSV.”
Maybe you should learn to read before acting like a dumbass
I think it’s obvious why Quiet doesn’t speak now. Kojima would have to pay extra haha =P
Made my day.
I gotta say, I kinda find his attitude a bit insulting. Whereas David Hayter clearly cares about the character, story, and everything Metal Gear related, it seems like Piddock only cares about the paycheck.
I’d like to know what exactly a derisory offer for voice work is.
It won’t be the same without him, maybe he and Konami will work something out.
I’m sure the man has bills to pay like the rest of us.
I’m not doubting that. Maybe it’s just the way he worded it that bugged me. Could have said they couldn’t come to an arrangement. Instead of basically calling Konami cheapskates. Even though they probably are haha. Professionalism, kids.
Of course it won’t be the same experience without Piddock but I think that as long as the new voice suits the character (Zero) it will be fine. Let’s not forget that in between mgs3 (1964) and phantom pain (1984) 20 years have passed and Zero will be over 70 years old. So I think is okay if his voice change.
Hopefully they get Bryan Cranston, since he has appeared in A LOT of Movies with not a Huge Budgets as supporting characters with like minutes of Screen time, so i don’t think Bryan is Expensive, since he is not doing it primarily for Money, but because he loves it, so i would welcome a Bryan Cranston Cipher.
It really doesn’t matter since in terms of reprising old voice actors, MGSV has been nothing but disappointing. I’m just looking forward to the gameplay and plot more than anything right now (which look to be the best in the series!). Besides, not everything can be perfect in development. It’s called equivalent exchange.
Hey, Kiefer Sutherland ain’t cheap!
He’s a TV Actor, not a Hollywood Actor, so of course he is Cheaper.
Reminds me of the mistreatment the Silent Hill voice actors got when the HD Collection was being made, I have to assume Konami is pretty cheap when it comes to voice acting and they are also developing Silent Hills at the same time.
But the Japanese cast remains untouched? It must be favoritism. This is depressing. ;_;
