Kojima will not appear as a buddy in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

In an interview with Famitsu, Hideo Kojima gave some more details on the AI buddy system in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Translations by JunkerHQ.

According to Kojima, you will be able to choose from a variety of buddies. We already know Quiet and DD the wolfdog are among them. However, Kojima mentions you have to choose carefully when taking along soldiers you’ve extracted, since they were originally your enemies. When talking about Quiet during the Tokyo Game Show, he mentioned a ‘bond system’ that determines the actions she can perform, so maybe that’s something that goes for all allies.

Also, if you have your buddy kill a lot of enemies, it will bring down your score.

And no, Kojima will not appear as a buddy in the game. “If I got you spotted you might take it out on me.” Hopefully he will at least be at Mother Base if you’ve rescued him in Ground Zeroes.

Doesn’t matter to me. All I want is riding a lion in TPP 😀

  • James Raskalov

“If I got you spotted, you might take it out on me.” I laughed at that. Kojima has the best sense of humor.

  • Nekkedsnake

Maybe ppl will mod their Steam versions of GZ and TPP to put whoever they want. Take Kaz. Paz. Chico. And Kojima hahaha. Pretty Much a skin mod.

    • MrVux007

that is if the games are mod-able ? :s

      • Nekkedsnake

Trust me. Someone out there will figure it out. Then it’ll show up on Kotaku or Joystiq. Then Nyxus will cover it!

        • MrVux007

sorry for being a pessimistic bastardo ….but didnt they said the same thing about MGR?(even tho it doesnt use the same engine,so everything is a possibility now ^^)

      • Venom Snake

From what Hideo has showing Developing Level Designs in Fox Engine doesn’t requires codding, so modding should be actually easier then GTA IV Modding.

        • MrVux007

can you link me that info please …i hate it when im not *in the loop* 😀

          • Venom Snake
          • MrVux007

yes this only show how *easy* it is for developers now with the fox engine ….but that doesnt confirm your statement, can you link me a written article or at-least a video with a translation that he actually says that ….(just want to be 100% sure,im not saying that you statement is a lie ) 🙂

          • Venom Snake

I don’t have a link to a Translation, but someone who translated said that Hideo was showing how Level Design doesn’t require coding thanks to Fox Engine, making the Cost of Developing Games 1/5 compared to any other engine.

          • MrVux007

Actually I know on wich article your reffering to….Yong has that info on his site….it actually says that it requires “less” coding …wich does about 80% the job….in short game is still coded and he also said that his plan is to “burrow” FOX engine to universitys for young game developers to learn from it….but as far as making it public he restrained from that …check The Nasian site for more info….I would post a link but I’m currently at work…remind me later pls cuz I will forget

      • Derrik Touve

There are model swaps for GZ already, texture modifications are easy IIRC, but I haven’t tried it yet.
As for scenario modifications, if they’re anything like the rest of the MGS games, it’s gonna take a long time to find out.
Sadly, I don’t see Kojima putting out an editor or modder, things wouldn’t be up to his “standard”. At least, that’s how I feel.

        • MrVux007

*There are model swaps for GZ already, texture modifications are easy IIRC, but I haven’t tried it yet.* wait i might have understood you…did you meant to say that there are allready modded textures made by the modding community….or are you reffering to those outfits(Gray fox, raiden or solid snake) that came with Jamais-vu and Deja-vu?

          • Derrik Touve

Sorry that was a bit ambiguous, I tried to fix the wording up a bit but I messed up I guess. I think playing with the “outfits” during the main mission is what I meant to say (I haven’t played the DLC, sorry, thought it was a Rising model initially).

Texture modification is definitely doable though. I don’t know where models are however, I really haven’t looked into it much.

          • MrVux007

Please do inform me if you do find more info on this…..im trully intrigued 🙂

          • Derrik Touve

I thought I replied to this already, but…
Right now you can only swap playable characters, so not quite what I was thinking at first.
Second off, modifying textures is definitely possible, models are gonna be more work.

          • MrVux007

guess we will have to wait out and see…even tho i strongly believe that this wont be modding friendly knowing Kojima-san… ;/

    • Venom Snake

I will put David Hayter as a Buddy and make him GOD Mode!

    • moto hellogoto

I’d bet $50 that the first mod released will be a nude mod of quiet showing her melons.

      • Nekkedsnake

She might as well be code named Naked Quiet XD

    • Invader_skoodge

If Kojima wants the unshaken loyalty of the PC players, he should add that Level Editor they showed off at TGS and a console command a la Bethesda. Mods, Mods everywhere. They would add a page to the Nexus. LOL

  • Golgari

Kojima, I’m ok with that. I don’t need you to be my buddy in a videogame. I want you to be the greatest game designer of all time. So, yeah 😀

  • moto hellogoto

I’m going to treat Quiet like a princess because I want the best performance out of her.

    • Fraaancis

It would be fun if they bring back Date Missions from PW.

      • James Raskalov

That… Would actually be rather awesome.
I would more than enjoy doing one of those with Quiet.

  • MrVux007

*However, Kojima mentions you have to choose carefully when taking along
soldiers you’ve extracted, since they were originally your enemies.* please dont tell me that there will be yet another *Paz* situation…….. jeeeez

  • grapes9h5

Ah man, I was hoping you could take Hideo out as a buddy. Oh well…

  • PrinceHeir

Shame about no Kojima-san buddy 🙁

  • BerserkerVTR

“According to Kojima, you will be able to choose from a variety of buddies.” Gray Fox, please.

  • ThreeMadFrogs

Very interesting that you have to be careful of your recruits. I guess after a while they can be more trustworthy when their respect for Big Boss grows.

  • moto hellogoto

I want to know how long the game will be. I really hope the game will last 20 or more hours on a first playthrough.

    • decoyF0XX

I doubt it will be as little as 20 haha

  • MGO. Talk about MGO, Kojima. Please q.q

    • decoyF0XX

I’m starting to think there’s no MGO 🙁

      • Fraaancis

Im already think that MGO is other players Mother Base invasion by Snake which they show recently.

        • decoyF0XX

Yeah, and that’s all we might get.

          • WhatTheJuicay

I agree with all 3 of you. 🙁

    • psychomantis18

One of the things I love about the MGS series is that it doesn’t focus on multiplayer. Since MG the series has had one strong single player narrative after another. Fair enough that some people out there like multi-player, but I for one am extremely happy with Kojima’s dedication to providing the best single-player experiences in gaming

      • I know, the single-player looks totally kickass, indeed. But as an old school MGS player, I just fell in love when I played MGO2 and I’ve been waiting for over 2 years to play it again and NO, I won’t jailbreak my playstation to play it again. So, I’m just waiting for the official MGO3 to come out. Yes I will play the single-player version and I’ll try to do the missions in so many different ways but the one thing I look foward the most is the multi-player.

        • psychomantis18

Fair enough. To each his own

  • Venom Snake

1 question that keeps bugging me about the PC Version of Ground Zeroes is, is it going to have the improvements already added to Phantom Pain that were gathered trough Fan Feedback?(like the better/smoother shooting from Cover, being able to use the Dumpsters from Camp Omega to Hide and/or hide Bodies, Limited Suppressor for the Tranq Gun etc.), or is it going to be a straight up port of the PS4 version with all of its little problems that Fans got in March?

    • Cobra

Pretty sure that the WU’s suppressor having unlimited durability in GZ is completely intentional, since it’s no doubt a flashy new one that’s been developed by MSF’s R&D team since PW. A heavy part of TPP is going to be rebuilding everything back up from scratch, so this includes equipment and the R&D team increasing suppressor durability and all that jazz, meaning the GZ tranq pistol will probably be the final upgrade available in TPP.

Same with the night-vision/thermal goggles having an unlimited battery life in GZ, you’ll need to upgrade the battery life via the R&D team in TPP (In all of the videos we’ve seen so far, the goggles have a little bar under the icon), just like in PW.

      • Venom Snake

What about the smoother cover for example?

        • Cobra

Hopefully, but to be fair, we don’t really know a great deal about how significantly they’ve tweaked it beyond a fairly innocuous remark from Sean Eyestone.

          • Venom Snake

I hope is a Redux, otherwise it should come this November.

      • Romain Robin

Something that needs to be fixed is the use of the binoculars while undercover. You can easily zoom in from a corner by pressing R3, but if you use the binocular, you just watch the wall. Really frustrating when you crouch behind a small wall/block. Would be nice to have a sort of tilt/lean option like in MGS2 where you could stand on your toes to look higher.

  • decoyF0XX

Imagine Glaz and Palitz as buddies damn!

    • Venom Snake

      “The Eye and The Finger”

    • James Raskalov

Fuck yes. I’m sniper oriented in gameplay. Then I’ll have Quiet, Glaz, and Palitz as buddies. THE SNIPER QUARTET!

      • Hanna-Mari

Sniping is just… love. “I watched the stupidity of mankind through the scope of my rifle.”

  • Venom Snake

Tomorrow we will finally get the 1080p version of the TGS Demo.

    • crimsonfox

But will it be in english?!
I hope so… I need to hear Sutherland’s smooth yet assertive voice.
“hold her down, HOLD HER DOWN!”

      • Venom Snake

        Snake: Chico is me!
Chico: No, Go away impostor, you don’t sound like Hayter!
Snake: Shhhh, Calm down, don’t fight it.

        • crimsonfox

HAHA I can just imagine Big Boss shhing Chico with one finger over his lips.

    • crimsonfox
      • Fredy Carius

Does anyone know if there`s a way to download gamespot videos?

  • Cobra

“However, Kojima mentions you have to choose carefully when taking along soldiers you’ve extracted, since they were originally your enemies”

I like the idea of this. It always struck me as a tad strange (And even by Metal Gear standards; though I appreciate that they had to make it work in a gameplay context) that Portable Ops and Peace Walker established that just about any soldier, regardless of nationality or political allegiance, would seemingly just drop everything in their lives to blindly follow BB just because he corners them and gives them the whole “BOSS BOSS BOSS BOSS BOSS BOSS BOSS BOSS” speech, even though I guess PO tried to justify it to a certain extent by claiming Snake was something of a cult hero in Russia for killing Colonel Volgin. I’m guessing from all the talk about “racial and cultural differences” in TPP will mean that Diamond Dogs/proto-Outer Heaven will be absolutely rife with infighting amongst its staff.

  • Neil Kapit

Perhaps MGS-canon Kojima died during XOF’s attack on Mother Base 🙁

    • Venom Snake

Maybe he was not at the Mother Base, maybe in Story he was watching a Movie or something.

      • Neil Kapit

Or he was working for Skull Face all along! Even in-canon Kojima is a massive troll

        • Venom Snake

Maybe he was on a Date with Amanda, she wasn’t at the base during the attack.

  • Invader_skoodge

:[ I see kojima’s been playing Megami Tensei games like Persona 4. That “Bond System” is like “Social Links” half the time in the midnight channel(out on missions) half the time hanging out with friends at Junes(mother base dates)

  • Maik O’Bannon

It’s good that he won’t be a buddy in game,he would have stayed forever hidden posting on twitter

  • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

WHAT!? That would have been so awesome!

  • Homer J Simpson

This is getting old. Who cares if Kojima is in the game. When can i get my hands on it. What is the release date. This waffling around the release date looks more like this game is like duke nukem forever.

    • It’s coming next year.

      • Homer J Simpson

Next year is 365 days. It is a whole lot different being released in January then in December. Give us a day.

        • Yes, but now that it isn’t coming this year, we know we’re not going to be playing it anytime soon. They’ll probably give us the release date once they know it themselves.

  • JASKO

Kojima as an avtive Decoy would be great and a funny Easter Egg

    • tony

thats a great idea…. then the soldiers would start bowing down to it like some kind of god… i know kojima loves that

  • Big_Boss88

I’m satisfied with Kojima being just in the Mother Base :D, but he better salute me everytime I see him or I’ll kick his ass ;).
Also this i really like: Need to be careful who to take along but I wonder what it really means. Are they gonna backstab us or something lol. And if the bond system stays with every ally, it will be really awesome.

  • Jason Mounce

Doesn’t mean he won’t be Staff, obviously. I have a seat in Intel waiting for him.
